Once the post timeskip series gets animated?
Will one piece get a second chance on tv….
-
-
Dude, of course it will. And don't you think this is too 'spoilery' for the anime thread?
-
…..It didnt occur to me....
Dont ban me plz.
-
It…lost it's first chance? Since when I why didn't I hear about it.
Wait, are you talking about outside Japan? If so, then I don't see why. The story is evolving and maybe the series popularity will spike again, but that doesn't seem like it'd change it's relationship in other countries.
…..It didnt occur to me....
Dont ban me plz.
Huh, I just checked the rules and saw a big blank under the anime spoiler rules.
-
-
I am hoping that they do a cover story arc or two in between the anime time skip. Do like Lucci's and Enel's.
-
I think it will just a matter of time
-
I think it might. Yet, only if anime can come back into a popular swing with the younger viewers. It all depends…

if people put it back on they would.
-
@Tamaki:
if people put it back on they would.
could it really? didn't the 4kids dub beat it to a bloody pulp? i do want it to come back on tv really badly
-
I don't care what anyone thinks there is a force against trying to get this show on the air because it's the opposite of what the corporate media is trying to push… Sumner Redstone and his ilk would much rather air American Idol than a series that tears apart his globalist precepts as being the bullshit that they are.
Once the dub gets past W7, when the series really hits it's stride I can't see them really stopping it.
Dragonball had the same problem, though without ripping apart the New World Order.. but eventually it will end up on TV I think. It might take a year or two but it will happen.
We need to fight to keep it real though, and find a medium between bullshit western censorship and the heart of the series to push it forward. 4kids tried to turn it into a new Pokémon.. western cartoons have no semblance to how Anime works though.. they just push mindless drivel.
So we need to find a healthy medium. To be honest, I'm willing to wait until it overtakes DBZ as the greatest manga just so it'd be treated with the respect it deserves. In my opinion, I think our best bet is to petition Adult Swim to make the unedited version a daily staple in the programming. The youth in American ain't like the youth in Japan and the best and most profitable avenue is on AS.. they have shown leeway with borderline revolutionary topics.. and they respect anime.. so in my opinion this should be our focal point.
There could be issues with this we need to look too.. if anyone knows if certain companys own marketing rights for merchandising.. which could have been a major problem.
They could just say no, as they have rights to the product and they just want to cash out with action figures and whatnot. might have say in what goes on with it. For example if a company has a contract for Luffy action figures in america they could poo poo on a real run for the show by merit of a contract (if anyone wants to look into this.. please do.) and they want the show marketed to the lowest common denominator as to maximize their profits. But tl;dr, we should focus on adultswim. I think it's our best bet. Especially with where the series is going.. and AS could use the soon to be greatest manga ever before it gets too big that they can afford on their docket.. it's a match made in skypeia!
But yes, there are forces against us and it will take a lot of work from us to make it happen but if we focus on petitioning our efforts to one source (OPodcast? help?) we might make it a reality! -
I hate FUNimation's voice acting on One Piece almost as much as 4Kids'. Sure, it's unedited video but the VA is still pretty awful, especially the opening and ending dubs.
I don't want to see it on TV unless it was on some specialty channel with Japanese audio and subtitles. -

Nothing beats the amazing acting abilities of a Japanese VA going Khkhkhkhk for an entire episode.

That's not a very good comeback. At all.
People are allowed to not like one little licensee's dub of the series. Why they would be posting in a sub-forum for that licensee's dub I'm not entirely sure, though.

I don't want to see it on TV unless it was on some specialty channel with Japanese audio and subtitles.Well, it's only practical to have a dub of it on TV. That's what Americans watch. It's fine that you don't like the dub, but if you want it to finally gain the popularity it deserves around here, it needs to be dubbed and on a big channel.

agreed people are allowed to give their vocal opinions on a show.
but why when mentioning it, does someone always have to belittle the other one, both versions are fine. heck i like the dub better than the original a million times over but you don't see me turning it into a Sunday night soap. (example aside)
back on topic, has anyone any proof that it might happen?
-
In terms of Dub?
I dunno.
Nothing beats the amazing acting abilities of a Japanese VA going Khkhkhkhk for an entire episode.
LOL I agree. Some people get too caught up in the idolisation of a Voice Actor that, at the end of the day, they most likely can't even understand.
-

If it failed in English like many Japanese programs before hand, why not try it in its original language? If people out there anywhere like it original with subtitles, maybe that's something new for people watching television. They probably just haven't heard it because it's possible they don't spend much time on the internet. It could be a massive sweep of success.

what in America? lets see how can i put it in a polite way…...? yeah im pretty sure many people are to lazy to read. i for one wouldn't mind.and plus, what network has actually done this where it has worked? they are not going to do it anyway.
and besides, it didn't really as much fail in English, seeing as there wasn't proper marketing/ getting the word out on this anime, not to mention they started in the worst possible spot in the anime, and i don't think i have to mention the 4kids fiasco.
eh at the end of the day, a dub is just more fashionable, and a fantastic one at that, dare i say better than the original in most aspects.
-

Uhh… Why does it matter? English or Japanese, it's still the same show and would probably perform about the same, if not worse, due to some people not being able to read or being slow readers. If I was a kid watching TV, I would want to watch something I could actually listen to and understand. Not something I'd be forced to read quickly at the bottom of the screen, look up again, and then back and forth just to see and understand what's going on.
The edited TV version of the show's target audience is for just about everyone; mostly children. Not hardcore purists or weeaboos. Stick to the DVDs if you dislike the voices that much.
Nothing beats the amazing acting abilities of a Japanese VA going Khkhkhkhk for an entire episode.
I know right? It sounds like they're hocking a frickin' loogie.

From what I've heard, the only thing that the FUNimation dub failed was to meet CN's ridiculous expectations to keep an anime on the air. I've heard it was actually doing pretty well.
There are a lot of people out there that will not watch subs. I know many of them, and everytime I go to Hulu I see dub only people getting mad when an anime is only uploaded as subs.
The FUNimation dub, whether you personally like it or not, is actually quite accurate to the original. We prefer the sub voices so much mostly because they are what we saw first, other people don't quite think like us.
-

Because we live in America, where 283,795 people liked "I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PRESS 1 FOR ENGLISH. WE ARE IN THE UNITED STATES, LEARN THE LANGUAGE!!" on facebook.
I personally am, totally against the idea of showing it in Japanese on an English channel.
Do you know how many people that move would alienate from the audience. I would safely guess about 70% of the audience.
I'm begining to think some of you guys don't understand how small and how much of a niche market the anime market really is. To be honest, the river's dried up. It hit its peak when I was in High School, and that's when I knew 5 people who were into the Anime Culture, and the rest were either DBZ veterans, or Nautro new comers.
-
A channel that shows only subtitled shows? That's the dumbest idea I ever heard. That channel would tank in ratings and eventually proper programing higher than Tech TV or G4. The intended demographic is so small, why bother?
-
Yeah, over here there's this channel that shows all it's shows dubbed in Welsh, and the presenters speak in Welsh. It's failed massively. (Especially since only 20% of the people in Wales, let alone Great Britain, actually speak Welsh)
Plus, the whole point of a Dub would be to translate and convey what is happening for the Japanese audience, in the same fashion - for another audience, in this case, English Audience.
-
When I was little, Cartoon Network showed all its cartoons in English and the channel was still massively popular. I think it has more to do with close-mindedness by English speaking people than anything else.
-

this just this ^^^
i could care less about voices, its all about conveying emotion and putting the effort into your character, and the music, while still trying to convey the same message, and so far through my comparisons, the funi dub has done that.
-

Depends on the culture. In America, yeah, it'd probably flop. In Portugal, we actually do have a channel like that, Animax. Shows a bunch of subbed anime (though recently they started airing live-action american shows… ugh).

But, instead of spamming "This", why don't I go back to your post.
I hate FUNimation's voice acting on One Piece almost as much as 4Kids'. Sure, it's unedited video but the VA is still pretty awful,
Yeah….no. There aren't that many voices in the original that greatly exceed those of Funi. The only voice that's really far better in the Japanese version is Chopper's (I'm only talking about the Straw Hat Crew, mind you).
especially the opening and ending dubs.
Ending 3, 6, 8, and maybe 9 are the only bad endings.
Opening 2 is the only bad opening.
Opening 1 is alright, and Openings 3 and 4 are greatly dubbed.I don't want to see it on TV unless it was on some specialty channel with Japanese audio and subtitles.
Yeah, you know that's not gonna happen right? That only really works for movies. And only on channels like HBO or something.

For those out there who haven't figured out how American television works…let me reiterate what Badass SnoCone just said:
Anime will not air on American TV in Japanese (with English subtitles)!
If you want One Piece to succeed…on television...in the United States of America...then you will have to watch it in English…dubbed…by FUNimation.
That's all there is to it.

I'm going to disagree. FUNi wouldn't even bother including Japanese audio on their releases or those survey cards they ask to mail back to them asking about your viewing preferences, if English was the only thing Americans were interested in.
I'm sure a fair portion of you live in the U.S. and like the original Japanese better, and may very well have been dragged into anime fandom through it.FUNimation's channel could air it in Japanese without any problems and take it from there to get good ratings of its popularity. After that, it may be recognizable enough to do some research to see about putting it on a network in the evening.

Opening 1 is alright, and Openings 3 and 4 are greatly dubbed.I thought opening 2 was just bad in general. Also to go with it Why do people that watch subbed anime thing they are the only ones that watch any anime and everything should be subbed whether on tv or not. I mean Japan has the right dub America cartoons so why not us dub their cartoons? It just wouldn't be fair

English isn't what some Americans are interested in. It's what most Americans SPEAK and READ. If I was a little kid watching pokemon or DBZ in subs I wouldn't be able to keep up with the action and understanding what they are saying, that would of turned me off of anime most likely forever.

You're remembering a time when anime was heavily edited with kids in mind. They wouldn't show FUNi's version of One Piece to kids of that age anyway.

We want One Piece to succeed; become popular in the U.S. It won't happen if they try to appeal to the people already watching it. We want more viewers and more people to become fans. It's not just so we can watch it on TV.
-

The sub-only community is rather corrupt. Most wouldn't watch it on TV even if it aired.
-
"Some Americans" aren't ratings. To put a Japanese Show on say Cartoon Network, and lazily stick some subtitles over it alienates the main audience. Hence the whole point of the 'Dubbing' industry.
It makes the whole "Hurr Hurr, The Japanese Voice Actor that I can't understand is the best, just because he is, because he's Japanese / you can't translate 'Nakama' you heartless bastard!" crowd happy - but that alone isn't gonna get success.
-
@Mikey:

Yes, it is for the DVDs but FUNimation is obviously very interested in the viewing preferences of their fans and includes those options because enough want them.
FUNimation's dub isn't different enough from 4Kids to think it will succeed. Why try to re-invent the wheel? Okay, it is unedited but the voice acting isn't that different. If at all possible for television broadcasting, it would be best to offer 2 different audio broadcasts and target ages 14-21.
I just don't think all out English on Cartoon Network again is going to work. You use the argument that kids are too impatient to read the subtitles, they're probably also too braindead to follow One Piece's story because of its lack of violence and immediate action.
With Dragon Ball Z on CN.. loud screaming, violence and immediate satisfaction to the child's desire for action.
Pokemon.. probably the best marketing strategy of all time targeting the dumbest population of children to "buy them all". One Piece isn't like that. -

One Piece isn't like that. One Piece's story is basically like Pokemon or Naruto in the simplest form. "I WANNA BE KING OF THE PIRATES! I WANNA BE HOKAGE(aka a great ninja)! I WANNA BE THE BEST POKEMON TRAINER!". It's all just a simple plot with a whole lot of covering. While i was a kid watching the 4kids dub it wasn't that hard to understand what was going on. He shouted that he wanted to be king of the pirates and that is what I thought when I saw one piece "He is striving to become king of the flipping pirates". But not ALL kids can get it. I don't like when people say kids are usually too "stupid to understand" or whatever. Everyone has had that moment where they were too stupid to understand something whether kid or adult.

soooo much fail here.
Alright, let's imagine a little scenario shall we?
Your a kid maybe around 14 years old and you come home from school and decide to flip through a couple of channels because you really have nothing better do and you dont feel like doing homework.
Bam you find a channel that is playing a show called One Piece, which judging from the little opening song looks to be about pirates and such. But the lyrics appear to be in a different language? Sorta strange, but it sounds good anyway.
Bam the episode starts, and wtf the characters are talking in Japanese to? and they just put english subtitles? wtf. They are actually going to make you read? Not worth it for some pirate show you know nothing about.
Bam you switch the channel.
You go back to school the next day and someone asks "Hey, you check out that One Piece show?"
"The reply would be, ohh that one in asian with subtitles? Couldn't get into it"Alrightt now as alot of people would hate to think it, the target audience for the series i'd imagine is 13 and above. So the series is meant to pull in kids to get engaged into the show.
How the hell are you supposed to engage KIDS in a show where you have to take your eyes of the screen and read subtitles? Hell i didn't even like reading to much as a kid.So essentiallyyy, if a subtitled version of One Piece aired the new audience acquired from it's airing will be veryyy minimal and not even worth airing.
The thing that we all want is to get the One Piece word out there, and "alienating" the series and turning it away from its target audience is both stupid and the opposite of what we want.We would not get a new generation into the series, we would not get people to even take a second look.
That being said, if it even did aired with subs (which it never will) I would still watch it, why? Because I love One Piece why do you think i'm here?but the fact of the matter is that we want more people to know about this great series, and if it's subtitled the normal person wouldn't take a second look unless they loved anime in general or were bored.
-

Pretty much this, and as much as certain things on a release may cater to the die-hard fans (commentaries, Japanese audio with subtitles, other features on other shows), casual fans are a part of the equation, too. Look at the Wii - certainly the gamer crowd was excited about it for a while, but the reason that system has exploded it because of the casual gaming crowd.

Before I answer anything else, you have to take your eye off screen to read subtitles? You have a poor field of view if that's the case.
And how do you even know these kids wouldn't be alright with reading subtitles? They aren't 5. They should be able to read each subtitle lightning fast.
Listening to it in original format or English dub doesn't decide whether or not you're a hardcore fan, it's just a viewing preference and just because they don't watch it already doesn't mean they wouldn't prefer it in Japanese. And honestly, it blows the big one having to wait for dubs instead of just getting a simulcast. -

As a fan you want it to be shown in the original, uncut edition of the show. Any normal fan would. But, we want it on air for the publicity not for our own viewing pleasure. I want it to be shown as close to the Japanese version as possible, but American viewers won't get interested as easily as it would when its dubbed. A casual viewer probably doesn't want to pay full attention to the TV at all times just so he or she can understand what the characters are saying. Most people would probably prefer if they could automatically understand it straightaway and be able to see everything without having to look at subs just to know what they're trying to convey.

Of course publicity is important but it can also leave its reputation in ruin like the first time it aired in English. It would be best just to air it down low on FUNimation Channel and build from there. Taking a risk like putting it on a network again right away is a bad idea.
-
Ok. I don't you are seeing the point. A CAUSAL viewer wants to be able to go do something (say get a sandwich and the tv is still next to there) and they can hear and understand what they are saying instead of stuff like (GOMU GOMU NO ONO) they won't know what the hell that means. When you send a foreign cartoon to another country to expect a dub of it for casual viewers. I like anime of course but when I am watching it on tv I expect a fucking dub. Not some subs that go by so fast. AND there are tons of Japanese terms that can't be translated in english unless out a definition right next to the word. Thats too much fucking work. When I am eating and watching tv I shouldn't have to wait to a ad break because i wanna know what they are saying.
Not EVERYONE in the world can read that fast and what would happen? Fans would get turned off of anime from that type of bullshit. Like i said before when Japan gets a American cartoon guess what they do? They dub it.Why? FOR THE JAPANESE audience
to understand and they don't have to keep their eyes on the screen to know what the fuck is going on. Its the same thing that happens in america.Ed,Edd n eddy has one, Dexter has one. powerpuff girls has one. so why not vice versa? -

No but seriously, I get the point but even so, I still disagree on FUNi's dub going on network television. That's not going to change unless they started over and got proper singers to dub the themes and more suitable voice actors.

As long as it has voice actors that sound like they are trying and a good translation I don't give a shit. Also starting over would be stupid. I mean at least the funimation version sounds like they are trying and everything isn't a fucking pun.

With the decline of Anime on television, I want to say that One Piece might not get a chance on TV again. However, I cannot predict the future and I would absolutely love to watch One Piece on television.

7-year olds can easily follow subtitles, guys.
The fact that they're not used to it and are too lazy to do it is a whole different story. And THAT's why it's nice to have a good, English dub.
