Opening 13 Discussion Thread

Do people prefer a generic bland sad opening over a catchy happy tune?
Do you prefer a song whose mood goes completely against the arc it opens over something that actually fits lyrically and musically?
-
Brand New World didn't fit CP9, and it was the best Opening ever
I stand corrected -
I'd advise getting off the high horse there considering that to any outside party opening 13 makes One Piece look at least as homo as anything in Naruto. I'm just about the last person to praise any aspect of Naruto, but if they have anything at all it's awesome opening sequences.
I agree with you here, Naruto OPs are pretty good. But still, I don't think this OP was anything close to bad.
-
I'll give this a rest considering you're just making excuses for this opening based on decisions I think were poor to begin with.
It's all based on opinion, my friend. If you can't look past that, then the argument is pretty much over.
.: Edit :.
Forgot to mention this, but anyone else notice the return of "Zoro steals Sanji's Lollipop"? -
but let's look at this example of an opening for a shonen anime during an arc similar in tone and situation to One Piece's current arc….
How's the Sasuke's a whiny brat arc similar in situation to the Whitebeard's war arc? One has a guy spending half of the arc in a barrel because he betrays his home & wants power and the other one's a full-blown pirates vs. Marines war over an execution.

Except that 90% of Naruto openings since the one you've posted are the same ode to yaoiness, this shit got so old and unintentionally funny that it's hard to take that one seriously at this point - although i did find it good back then.
Not to mention that Luffy and Ace are freakin' brothers, come on.

That's completely and hilariously true, but considering that that's what the series is about after that point it at least makes them appropriate doesn't it? Look, I think we're letting our knowledge of how horrible Naruto's story is get in the way of our judgement… And yes, WE know they're brothers, thus "outside party."

Joking aside, it's far from a perfect fit but all I mean to say is that both arcs are about loss, the protagonist struggling with ineptitude, and two people caught within a conflict that's bigger than them.

Right, okay, I literally never listen to music in my free time
if you have no music sense than maybe it's safe to say, you probably aren't the best judge as to what's a 'bad song'.
the japanese seem to LOVE heavy sentiment, so i have a feeling greg will show eventually to tell us how japanese fans are squealing over the new opening.
Do people prefer a generic bland sad opening over a generic bland happy tune?
YES.
-
I like the fact that the song writer is actually a One Piece reader, and not just some media plug.
Then again with the enormous success of One Piece, it feels like it's hard to find someone that isn't these days.
-
Complaining about something can only get you so far people
I think the opening is just fine for one of those new fangled 2:30 openings
it's no Jungle P, but I like it well enough
-
You liked Jungle P?

Your entire time in this thread has been spent criticizing everyone's taste in openings. Which wouldn't be so bad, if you didn't do it every single time someone mentions an opening.
This opening is epic because the shot of Nami confirms the existence of doughnuts in OP. I don't think I've ever seen them in the series. EPIC.

I'm just grumpy, I liked the 12th opening

That just destroyed all credibility you have on the issue.

I think that the big deal is that it is a opening that is in this new era that is coming with the war, I'm 99% sure it would have been accepted if we weren't all expecting a Mature Opening :getlost:
Yeah well fuck you
Screw you, pal
-
Toei should just have Map of the Heart be the opening for the rest of the series, only with updated visuals.

OP 12 defined out-of-place openings. If that's your idea of a good opening, I'm glad you hate opening 13 so much.
-
shinpanman, you're right. the best opening naruto has ever had out of the million or so it's had IS better than a better than average one piece opener.
you have to keep in mind, that entire arc was basically just chasing and fights. two years with JUST fighting and chasing sasuke. it's a lot easier to slap an action-packed opening theme on a storyline like that than one that genuinely evoked feelings of desperation, tension, loss, etc. and have it fit.

now, look at the current naruto shippuden opener. a similar sad song, just like the current one piece on, except this one isn't quite AS exciting as the new one piece opening theme. despite the 'intense' things i'm assuming are happening in the story from the visuals. -
- Its a catchy Opening, Brand New World was also out of place for CP9 arc, but it was awesome, unless you guys hate that too, bastards
- I don't really hate it, but as I found out about the new Opening, I found out about your hate for 12, screw you, guys
-
Never really cared for BNW to be honest.
-
You…
Bastard -
lol i love all the openings except for crazy rainbow star,…..
-
Crazy Rainbow Star, man, that opening was so awful, although I didn't like Jungle P either, IMO, those were the 2 low OP's
Share New World was alright -
@Kairouseki:

good. so i'm not the only one, then..
-
in my opinion….
Brand New World
Hikari E
Share the World
Jungle P
One Day
We Are Remake
kaza wo sagashi
Bon Voyage
Kokoro No Chuza
We Are
Believe
Crazy Rainbow Star -
Just saw it today and wow. Normally not many opening slow songs when it comes to OP (that usually reserved for endings) but this wasn't that bad. Really felt the brotherly bond aspect of it. Not to mention the character shots. Good stuff. I suppose as we get further into the war, the opening will change little by little.
-
Kokoro no Chizu
|
v
We Are
Bon Voyage
Hikari E
One Day
Jungle P
Crazy Rainbow Star
Believe
|
v
Everything else -
For me, based on a combination of song quality and sequence quality:
Kokoro no Chizu = Brand New World
We Are
Believe
Hikari e = Bon Voyage
Share the World
Jungle P
Crazy Rainbow
We Are remix
One Day
Kaze wo Sagashiteyeah…. pretty strong trend here.
-

Everything elseSwap Believe and Crazy Rainbow Star and that's my list, only because I grew up listening to Believe on reruns so it kinda stuck.
-
This is a great opening, really fits the arc and the animation is some of the best I've seen in the series. But of course, there's always gonna be fools who can't tell quality if it punched them in the nose. Seriously, some of the negative posts against this opening are so laughably bad that it skips right over being "laughably bad" and stills at "total shit-tastic." It's no Kokoro no Chizu, but then again nothing is. This is better than any of the last handful of openings we've got.
-
I don't know, Believe just gets on my nerves for some reason. Probably because it's the longest running opening in the show.

Yeah I got sick of it long ago, but I gotta give it credit for being somewhat addicting for a while.
-
The song for Believe is nothing except kind of catchy, but it was extremely well matched to the visuals and captured the excitement of the early Grand Line stories.
-
believe was around for so long, because it was the best opening pre-kokoro no chizu.
i jumped into the manga right after around the time the baroque works and arabasta arc began, so i never really got to hear it ad nauseum.if you didn't watch it for a million episodes, it's a fun, fitting, and catchy song.
definitely the best of the first half of the series. -
Brand New World
Kokoro no Chizu
…
Hikari E
Believe
We Are
Bon Voyage
One Day
Share the World
Kaze wo Sagashite
Jungle P (probably the most overrated opening)

Crazy Rainbow Star (the worst opening replaced the best opening, which only ran for 14 episodes? Who the heck made that decision?) -

definitely the best of the first half of the series. This is actually kind of my approach and view of Crazy Rainbow Star.
By the time I caught up to around Water Seven, I was fucked over by suddenly being unable to find more episodes, so I switched to the manga almost immediately. I didn't really see much of the Crazy Rainbow Star opening for a long time.
I get the hate for it, but since I wasn't forced to watch it like others, I don't see it as a bad song. Maybe dumb animation sequences to go with it, but not a terrible song.
Kaze wo Sagashite is shit though. Sung by by some too old to wear her uniform anymore cheerleader with visuals that should've earned a better song that didn't invoke preschool anime theme songs.
One Day is … better than Kaze wo Sagashite. The lyrics are a blandly read out monologue which has been done ad verbum a thousand times before. The music is nice at least, but its tempo definitely should've been picked up here and there.
-
I was unimpressed. It lacked the punch of some of the other openings and the slow tempo made all two minutes and thirty seconds drag.
-
I just think they put to less in their openings… I Like the song, it is very catchy in my opinion.
-
I hated Share the World. It was my least favorite opening. My favorite is either Brand New World or the 3rd opening (I think its third. Its the one where at the beginning you see earth and Merry is floating right next to it on a black background..)
-
I think the new opening is friggin fantastic. I was iffy on it at first but after hearing it a few times I think its fits quite well.
The slow start its what kinda kills it at first but the middle or rather when Luffy starts running it picks up a bit for me. I wanna start running with Luffy.
The art and animation are superb. I like the way they handled character introductions. Definetly a hugh step up from the last opening.
-
fuck that song..that song is not the problem…ITS THE SPOILER OF THE DEVILFRUIT POWER
-
Spoilers in Openings is very common these days. Don't see why anyone would be surprised or think this opening would be any different.
Infact I think a lil spoiler here and there makes openings a lot better. Gets me pumped to see that stuff when they finally get to it.
-
First opening I remember with Luffy just walking like that .
Seems odd but I do like it .
-
Whitebeards power = little Spoiler????

I tried my hand at doing my own version of the opening. Granted, I love the new opening, but I had so much fun when everyone made their own versions of opening 12, that I felt compelled to do this.
The song's Tentai Kansoku by Bump of Chicken. I was intrigued by some people saying they wanted or expected a song with a faster tempo. Thissong, I felt, is a bit faster than One Day, but not too much.
Whitebeards power = little Spoiler????
I'm looking at the song and can you really tell what WB's power is if you didn't already read the manga beforehand? Obviously Marco and Joz are spoiled, but as far as anyone can tell, WB has a static electricity DF.
-
Whitebeards power = little Spoiler????
If I seen that and had not read the manga prior I wouldn't have any idea wtf he just did. Definitely not that big a deal in this day and age of openings.

That's even worse than opening 12.
