One of my close friend begged me to read OP. She showed me some of the crew's pictures and talked about OP whenever she had a chance. However, I was a Narutard so I wasn't interested:getlost:. 2 years passed and Naruto started to go down hill, I finally decided to give OP a chance. So I went on OM website to read the scans online because the copies of OP volumes in Vietnam sucked, but the scans quality wasn't good either so I watched the anime. At first it was boring but it started to get interesting in Arlong Park arc. I continued and completely got hooked. I started to read the manga and now I'm a fan.
Your first One Piece Experience

Its strange but… a lot of people needed to be really "forced" into starting this, and they all get hooked... One Piece is really good and all, but right there is its weakness

It was December 2008. I discovered that a game called Jump Ultimate Stars existed and that you could buy NDS game cards were you could put tons of DS games in it with a micro SD. I wanted to play JUS because of Dragonball Z and Shaman King (being the only SJ series I was interested at the moment). When I began to play, you could only use 2 characters at the beginning. Either Naruto or Luffy. I hated Naruto in everyway (still do), I found it very overrated, so I decided to use Luffy everytime on the JUS fights until I got DBZ and Shaman King characters. As I kept playing and unlocked more One Piece komas, I saw them far more different than the other ones on the game. Like if those specific komas had a certain spark of originality, and I even began to make tons of One Piece decks because I loved the characters attacks. I got curious and decided to see the first episode. Then I got interested in it, saw the second episode. Then, in January 09…I decided to watch the whole series, so I found a torrent containing 300 episodes, so I bought a new Hard Drive (yes, I bought a Hard Drive just for an anime series I didn't even knew I was going to like in the future) and downloaded them, and watch them little by little. I was greatly impressed that such a series would exist. I found it so different compared to other things I've seen or read that I became an obsessed fan. I catched up to the series by June 09, since I was busy in that time preparing for college. OPs originality conquered me, and then I met ArlongPark, and I am now a proud One Piece fan and member of this forums. :D
-
It was in september of 2006, I read in Wikipedia about a manga that was No. 1 in sales in Japan, and I thought, "a better anime/manga than Naruto?" then I saw the first 278 episodes in three months and I realized that One Piece is the best and Naruto really sucks
-
when one piece first came out on toonami i remmember it replaced a show which was quite popular i remmember thinking this anime looks like crap and no one would watch it until i happen to watch a later episode with zoro and sanji in the crew and i just needed to see the next episodes so i went online and now iam a fan that is why i undrerstand why some people don't care for one piece a lot because they have never given it a chance.
-
It was last year I think. I was feeling a bit down and saw One Piece, now I heard about One Piece before and thought it was absolutely childish and dumb. I mean how could a story about a 17 Year-Old being a Pirate King be exciting? I remembered it being popular in the past, this was maybe 2002-06 maybe, those years, there was a lot of OP RPG's popping up in messageboards everywhere. And I just shrugged and thought One Piece was just another Inuyasha.
Boy-oh-boy, how wrong I was. I think it was the perfect tale of not judging a book by its cover, protagonist, the protagonists' hat, and its popularity. To think, baseless contempt and stereotypes almost made me miss this manga.
Needless to say, I'm glad I gave it a whirl. And now I need to buy some manga volumes, or DVD's to stop from feeling like a mooch.
-
sadly the 4kids but after a couple years of boredom it was recommended by a friend and i got hooked and i have watched it 3 times all the way through(i feel kinda sad now like part of me just died a little oh well who cares its one piece) :)
-
Around 2004, I started on episode 1 after someone recommended it to me. I think it was a kaizoku fansub that I watched. I thought it was a funny but didn't like the art style at first. And I got hooked after getting to Usopp's Island.
-
End of college in 04. A friend of mine showed me the anime fight between Chopper and Chessmarimo. It took me a year but I remember that and started collecting the Viz volumes and reading them. Once I got to Zoro's defeat from Mihawk I couldn't wait any more and I had to know what happens next, so I went online and found the scanslations on the MSN one Piece list site.
when were you active on msn OP. Cause i used to be on MSN OP v2.
-
My mom got me One Piece vol. 3 and 7 when I was in like, 4-5th grade. Then a year or so later someone stole my vol. 3 and I got pissed. But… I didn't really care about OP much then. Then I saw it on 4kids and... still didn't really care. Then I got bored one day and searched for the next episode that was gonna appear on CN... then I got hooked. Third time's the charm?
-
I was like in 5th grade and when i saw the first episode. it was like in 2003. i thought it was stupid cuz luffy's arm stretches and shit. But after few episode i was like its not that bad. so everyday after skool i always watch it for 4 years but i have to go here in the united states. So the very last episode i saw b4 going here was when norland helping out the villagers. (forgot their names). so 2 yrs have passed i fucken totally forgot one piece. so when i got my new laptop i was like what anime should i watch. then i cant think of anything so my friend suggested this site called narutowire and i saw new episode and i was like imma finish this anime and then after enies lobby arc i was like this manga/anime is amazing then thrillar barc came and fall in love to gecko moria and now i think one piece is the most amazing anime . story wise…specially the plot twist....laboon, duval, etc.
-
Even though now i care about the story and the characters more than anything, 5 years ago, all i could care about was the action in most manga. The thing that got me hooked about one piece was the Luffy vs. Blueno fight in the anime. Then i was like, got to actually read this bitch, then BAM, obsessed with an amazing story. Now i own all japanese volumes, am currently learning the language, and basically make my perception of time go faster till wednesday afternoon, when the chap comes out.
-
My hentai-watching roommate from Hong Kong had Movie 2. I had burned through all of my other DVD's and needed to kill some time on a Saturday morning.
-
I saw the premiere on Toonami i was like "I like this show"
-
one day on my first day on the site animefreak i saw on the featured list one piece and thought ill give it a whirl. i saw the entire anime in 3 weeks (340 eps or something)
-
watching the shitty 4kids version on TV, it just makes me puke… several years later, bored surfing the web, I searched for the japanese version (aka original, unedited), thinking "everyone says this series rocks, let's try it again", and damn it, I loved it xD
-
May 2006 was the year I fell in love with it. I said to myself "This show cannot be this stupid in japanese." As I kept watching the Alabasta arc subbed thats how I learned Ace's name, laughed at the way Crocodile laughed, and that there was actually no type of stupidity with the filth 4kids filled my head with. So I re-watched the whole thing subbed and loved every single episode and what made me addicted to series was the Arlong arc. Like it was to a point where I said "Fuck Naruto, I'm was wasting my time thinking that show is cool." Then being the only One Piece head at school since everyone was so asphyxiated with Naruto and Bleach where all I could do was to convince them to watch One Piece subbed since not only its underrated, but its simply the best. (That wasn't as successful since out hundred only 3 guys live the show -__-)

Interresting that most people's first impression of One Piece isn't that great, but they returned to the serie after a while. Could it be that the beginning of the serie wasn't that strong ?? or maybe because alot of people watched the anime in their own language the first time which make it sound stupid ??
I'd personally go with your second reason. I cannot speak 4 the others here. Just let me tell you sth bout the german censorship in animes:
If you watch the german dub anime of the EL arc, you would be facepalming each whole episode. The german VAs replaced sentences like "I'll kill you!" by lines like "I'll beat you up!"
In the original Ohara-FB Olvia said also "They found data about Ohara next to my dead comrades!" In the 'castrated' german dub version she says "They found data about Ohara next to my tired friends!", because they were lying on the ground. The censorship in Germany is ridiculous especially in the Animes and with video games. (When God of War 3 was released I was happy to live in Austria!)
The problem is, the german channel where OP was aired until EL arc wanted to show OP as a child's series, but it isn't a child series.
When I found out how brutal OP really was, I was like "Holy $hit, that's sum badass nasty stuff!" -
Yeah, it would seem that first experiences of OP are not that positive for a lot of people here… The only thing that slightly disturbed me on my first time reading was the way the translators made Luffy & co talk, but I got over it pretty quickly. After all, nothing was cencored and nowadays I actually think that the slang talk fits the series. Versatile accents and dialects are also present in the translation so it's a real joy to read.
-
well, first time i saw it on german rtl2(dubbed) think around 2003 and thought it was anime worthy of attention since dragon ball..since it was aired around 15h i could watch it only during my morning school shift and watched that way since the end of alabasta, when it got to skypiea i couldn't understand it anymore, plus rtl2 started re-running old episodes so i forgot about it…than, in 2008 i asked my brother to download DBZ for me and he got into OP(anime) also, and downloaded it. It took me a to summer to start watching it again from ep1, and finished it after EL, than i waited for winter holidays to download TB and after watching it, went to onemanga, read to the last chapter, reread from beginning, ended here for spoliers, and became a member...

One of the first few Shonen Jumps (Issue 9? I don't know. I unsubscribed to Shonen Jump over 2 years ago, and I gave all my issues to Good Will).
I walked down the magazine aisle, going to get some ice cream or something (frozen goods are next to magazines), and saw Yugi's face. I enjoyed Yugioh at the time, and it came with a free hour long trial or a Yugioh video game, so I bought the issue. It had the chapter where Zoro fought Cabaji, and I thought it was pretty cool.
-
4 Kids dub, I hated it at first. Then much later CN started airing the FUNI dub, and I thought it was cool. As a result I found it all online and began watching fan subs. Earlier this year I decided to read the manga which I am glad I did, it is awesome. I also have purchased all the FUNI box sets so far.
-
Hmm… I love One Piece, and it's the first series, anime or otherwise, that I really got into on my own without being told to "check it out" by a friend.
I suppose my first experience with One Piece was technically the 4Kids dub around 2000 or so. I never really got into it. Unfortunately, being about 7 or 8, I didn't understand that it sucked. I first saw it on the Fox Box because, at that age, I adored the atrocity of Sonic X and would watch the station for that. It didn't catch my attention, though. It's too bad, really, because I would've liked to have seen things like Helmeppo's hammergun for myself instead of just looking at screenshots of it. I did get into Naruto, though, because at that time I considered anything with spiky hair to be amazingly awesome. Of course, the only especially spiky-haired entities I encountered were those in anime series like Naruto and Digimon. I suppose I had an interest in Yu-Gi-Oh too.
Anyway, that's all unimportant. My next experience with One Piece was really an accident. Thinking back, it really makes no sense to me, and I honestly can't remember if I'm remembering how this happened... but here's my recollection anyway.
I was at Wal-Mart, and I had just gotten like $70 in Christmas money. I needed to spend it right away, of course, because as a child that's the most important thing. Screw buying better things later, right? Well, I picked out Mario Party or something, and then I was scouring the shelves for a cheapie. One Piece: Grand Battle was there for $20 and it looked relatively decent with its orange sunset cover and Luffy's face. So, completely on a whim, I grabbed it...and was mystified. I recognized some of the characters, like Luffy, Chopper, Nami, Sanji, and "Zolo." I knew who Buggy was, too, as well as Don Krieg, Kuro, and Arlong. But the others were all foreign to me, especially the "secret" characters, Crocodile and Mr. 2. Though I do remember getting a kick out of the latter's "Crazy Karate," pardon the pun. Oh, and this made me despise Sanji. He needed to die. Along with his sucker and his annoying voice. And Miss Sunday needed to lose the cowgirl accent, seriously, though the hand thing she did freaked the hell out of me. Also, why was Nami's name "Nami the Navigator"? That sounded dumb. Also, who was the blue-haired girl running around the deserty place? And was she riding on Chopper? It didn't really look like Chopper, but I couldn't tell...
(Note: Obviously, this was my impression of the game at that age. Karoo is epic.)
After a while, I totally forgot about that game, and I continued on with my 9-year-old life. Then, around two years ago, at the ripe age of 15, I started really getting into anime. This was mostly because my friends had told me that anime is cool, and I had told them that of course anime is cool, I watch it all the time. So I had to start doing that... In retrospect, saying things like that isn't really a good policy to go by.
I started obscure. I wanted to watch something nobody else had watched. So I totally randomly stumbled across Chobits. Yeah. Don't really recommend that one for people new to anime, unless you're into the whole "robot girl with special switch in special place" business...which I was, considering I was just hitting that age, so to speak. Then I found Love Hina...which I, again, enjoyed, because I was just hitting that age, so to speak.
Both of these series I watched in Japanese just because that's the language they were in. The subtitles didn't bug me in the slightest, either. In fact, a friend who always had rambled on about DBZ now rambled on about Naruto, and he insisted that the English version was terrible because the main character always said "Believe it!!" (He was right, the English version is terrible. But so is the Japanese version.) So guess what I started watching next? Yep. Naruto. Damn that friend. You see, this is the opposite of the earlier peer pressure. But hey, since the only anime I had really watched so far were a harem and a borderline hentai, Naruto was kind of refreshing. For a while, anyway. I spent a few months on the damn show, really, and even got well into Shippuuden. Hell, I got caught up with the anime before I thought I would try something new. And this is the part where I pity myself. At the top of the site I had been watching Naruto on there were quick links to their most popular series: One Piece and Bleach. Seeing One Piece listed, I remembered the game I had played years before. That was kind of fun...but it just wasn't all that cool. Bleach, on the other hand, looked amazing...! So I started. Watching. Bleach. :cwy: What a poor, innocent child I was...
A year passed and well, needless to say, I grew tired of Bleach quickly. Naruto still somehow kept my attention, but I wanted something I wouldn't have to wait until the weekend for. So I finally watched the first episode of One Piece. I thought it was pretty good, so I watched the second one...and that was pretty good, so I watched the third one...and then one thing led to another, and before I knew it, I'd watched something like 386 episodes of One Piece, at which point I became unable to wait until the following week, so I started reading scanlations of the manga from chapter 1. That was boring, considering I had just watched the entire series from start to Sabaody Archipelago, and now I was doing the same exact thing. However, I caught up in the manga within the week and laughed my ass off at Duval's face. The next day, I laughed even harder at the anime version of the same scene.
So, yes. Since then, I have been keeping up-to-date on both the manga and the anime, and have been buying the ViZ and FUNimation releases whenever I have some spare cash.
EDIT: Holy crap. I just wrote a book. >.<

9th Grade
My friend Jacob showed me his Shonen Jump.
Krieg vs Luffy
Hooked ever since.
-
The first time i saw One Piece was a commercial on Toonami 5 years ago…
-
My 1st was I think…German episode of One Piece, Luffy vs Mr. 3, as I was just checking channels, lol.
What really got me into One Piece though was movie 2 when a friend of mine showed it to me.
-
Watched openings of various anime on Youtube, remembered seeing promo pictures of One Piece from very start of manga series with Luffy's massive grin and thought - looks a bit silly. Watched opening 11 and was like, WTF? that dude's arm just stretched! Started to watch the anime from the very beginning until the first filler arc, which was brilliant, although I disliked the filler and have been reading the manga ever since. (Although I do watch the anime for the key parts or when the animation is bumped up for an episode)
-
My first experience was from 4kids. Thought it sucked so i passed it off. Four years later, I kept hearing One Piece was the best thing evar!!! soo i decided to watch every episode. That moment on I now think 4kids is crap for keeping me away from this awesome series for so long. lol
-
I was little and not the smartest kid but i remember seeing it on 4kids and being like this is the best show ever after it got cancelled i thought it ended then i found the manga online and i had to read it after i did i never want one piece to leave my side making it my number 1 on my anime and manga list
-
I watched the show on 4kids when i was like, 8, and thought it was cool. four years later, im bored, need omething to watch, so i think of one piece. I disregarded it at first because of the suckish voices and cheesy jokes, but then i remembered that there was a different version of the show. So i went and watched the first episode and realized it to be the greatest show/manga on the face of the earth and watched/read the rest of the series over the course of the summer. This was a year ago next week, when luffy first arrived at amazon lily.
-
I picked up the American Shounen Jump in '04 and saw Zoro vs Mihawk.
-
You know how it is. It was late, I was drunk, I was just experimenting but it ended up being really fun. Next thing I know I'm doing it every day and just can't stop. But I managed to slow myself down and only do it once a week, now.
-
I can proudly say… DUB PIECE!!! hahaha. my cousin showed me it because he did the voice of like momoo i think.
though i might have seen it in jump super stars first. either way, i saw 4kids soon after, and then switched to subs when water seven ended i think
-
Well I was watching Zatchbell one saturday night then a one piece advert. Art style looked pretty wacky and they talked about a rubber boy so I said this looks interesting. Watched it and it was funny as fuck, watched it every week then the fight scenes came then shit got intense…got hooked on it ever since then I searched online watched it on some anime sites then I finished them looked for the manga and I got hooked.
-
I bought the 2nd ever American Shonen Jump, I bought those monthly for about a year and I read One Piece starting from chapter 3 so I never really knew Luffy's origin or how he met Colby for at least that first year. About after the Buggy arc I started reading online, and if I remember correctly I found AP just after Water Seven.
-
I saw it back a while ago when 4kids TV was named something else (I want to say "x something" but I cant remember). I used to get up every morning at 8 to watch one piece and to watch ultimate muscle. It got discontinued right after chopper joined so I stopped watching it for a few years.
Then I started watching naruto, and halfway through naruto I thought to myself "Hey, this show kind of sucks, I think ill start watching that show with the kid who ate the "gum gum" fruit and became stretch armstrong." And I did. -
Mine was the 4 kids dub watched it and i thought it sucked. the started watching the one during the drum island arc either when nami got chased or during chesskamiro fight anyway i thought this aint half bad. Continuted til one piece was canceled on cartoon network so i just read the manga serialized in shonen jump.then last summer through a combination of manga and anime i caught up to where japan was at and i have benn obsessed since.
-
Didn't want to make a new thread out of this. But what moment sold you on One Piece? What made your mind click and think "I am not turning back from this series" ?
For me that moment was when Luffy punched through Don Kriegs spiked cape. I thought to myself so far this show hasn't been that predictable. But the moment Luffy wound up his swing and Don threw on the cape I thought "here we go, now he's gotta figure out how to disarm the cape to keep fighting, I hope they make it fast". Then "WHAM" I couldn't believe it! I will never forget that moment and feeling as long as I live. The sheer surprise in that this little kid was on BA mofo, and the story was not taking a typical approach to fighting.
-
It makes me happy to see so many people started with the 4Kids dub.
I fought really hard back then to argue for the need for the dub even if it was garbage. I knew it would mean, at the very least, the series would get exposure and a lot of kids watching it and not knowing any better, would eventually find out about the real thing.
It may have been an abomination but it helped a lot of people get into the series that might have otherwise passed it over.

This is probably the only defense for that horrible train wreck.
Seriously I would never have looked anything up for it after 4Kids, it was really Cartoon Network airing it that I decided to give it another shot.

I got into One Piece after my friend bought (and let me borrow) the first of the American Shonen Jump releases. At first I wasn't really expecting much:
"Wtf? Why's the kid stabbing his face?!!" but I did find it funny. Then Coby showed up and I started laughing at the slapstick humor.
Then I got through Zoro, Nami, and into Usopp and was hooked. My first experience with the anime was the 3rd movie with shitty english subs done in hong kong. (also borrowed from my friend, then given to me by said friend <3) For the longest I actually thought Sanji's name was 'Sunkist'. Then I got to Sanji in the manga and learned otherwise (yes I watched the movie before getting to him in the series. Also pre Chopper. SPOILER LOVER)
-
It all started in 2006 when the holidays began. I watched this morning kids show and it had this show called 'One Piece'. It was the 4Kids dub and although Luffy's 'ha ha ha heiigh!' was annoying, I loved the character design and story. When the holidays ended and I had just finished watching the baratie arc.
A few months later I picked up volume 4 from the library, quickly remembered how much i enjoyed the series and began to read. I finished the book and was upset that the library didn't have any more. So I googled where I could read them online for free.
Then my eyes were opened.
Since then, I've completed 4 more years of schooling, only two more to go. I've spent hundreds on books, DVDs and merchandise. I've watched numerous fansubs and scans, wasting hours and hours of study time (who needs to study anyway?), and had fun the whole way.
I discovered the One Piece Podcast and got back into AP early this year and my fandom has increased rapidly.
One Piece is awesome.

2004. I was about 11 or so..
My father got vol 1 and 2 for me to make up for taking me to a place with lots of paaaaaaaaain.
I only got to read the first pages before "it" began (okay I don't remember what "it" is, but painful it was! :/). But I had read enough! So when I had to be strong I just thought that "heeey that dude stuck a f***ing knife in his face, if he can be so brave then so can I"! Now… That was just stupid. :(
But I got hooked... So yeah. x) -

First time I was exposed to One Piece was throught the dubbed anime. It was terrible and I never got into for another few years until I decided to give it another try. Don't regret my decision at all now.
-
1st experience…
Sanji holding Fullbody like shit in the air. But I just saw this. So the next day I watched the re-run and from that day I was a OP fan^^
-
I saw episode 6, in January 2003, on the first day I went to my college anime club. Little did I know how much my life would change.
-
I was a big anime fan at the time (not really now) and it happened to be on. Though I'd heard bad dubbing before, I thought this was below par, manyof the bad dubbing trends I'd seen recently from other animes were there. While that normally doesn't bother me, I wanted to see what the orginal was like. At the time, I had no idea 4Kids were that bad and I've had a "love to hate" relationship with the company since. The more I watched the orginals, the more I loved One Piece and the less I loved the 4Kids dub.
To date, this is the only anime which caused me to seek out the orginal version after hearing a REALLY bad dub.
-
saw the 4fail dubbed episode with coby helmeppo zoro and the elbow axe guy
-
I saw an episode on whatever 4Kids was calling their saturday morning network at the time when they first aired episode 9. So, my first experience was with the dub. I thought "pirates! But wait, this is done kind of… badly. Let's look up the Japanese version!" And so I did, and I had fun, but the One Piece anime was never my favorite Japanese series. It wasn't until the Japanese anime had gotten to the Skypiea Arc that I switched to the manga, which was SO MUCH BETTER. And so the One Piece manga did become my favorite series, despite the horrible, horrible quality and inconsistencies of the scanlations that were available back then.
