Around 2003 I saw a pic of the straw hats. I got intrastate and looked around for it. That how I got started.
Your first One Piece Experience

-
I started it out of curiosity back in 2008, after I read so many posts in a forum that it's the best thing ever…etc. And guess what! it turned out to be really the best thing ever!
what was stopping me from reading it before that was the length, I was like: holy shit that's ridiculous!more than 400 chapters! And then I tried to read another long series, and guess what! they turned out to be the worst shit ever!
-
A Shonen Jump issue in 2003. I don't remember how I got the issue, but I didn't really take note of it back then.
The first time I took any note of One Piece whatsoever was probably 2006 when I saw an episode (or part of one) through the 4Kids One Piece dub on CN. Now I didn't really think it was anything special so I never seriously watched it.
In very early 2007 (Like January or February) I heard about how bad it had been butchered so I decided to watch it (subbed, of course.) from the beginning for some reason. Within a few months (or even less. I marathoned it.) I was already caught up with the Japanese airings, which was like in the early 300s around that time.
For real experience with the manga, I didn't read the manga until two months ago. I was happily satisfied with watching the anime through FUNimation's Simulcast until huge events started being spoiled to me, and with my love for the series I just could not take that anymore. Even if I left this forum those spoilers would still find a way to get to me. -_-
-
My sister tried showing me the first volume or two of the Japanese version and told me it was awesome… But when I flipped through it, I didn't like the style at all and thought it was weird looking, so I ended up not reading it.
Then a while later I decided to give it another chance, then realized how great it was. I've been following it since. I practically grew up with OP, seeing as about half my life has been spent reading it (that's kind of scary thinking about it).
I was so glad when I found out that I could find chapters online so I didn't have to wait till a new tankobon came out to read it. -
I saw the first volume in a store. Laughed at the big mouth, and left it there. Then it had bugged me at time to time, but I didn't give it too much chances to get on me. Years passed.
My life had changed very radically… it was summerbreak and I saw the doublepack of 28 and 29 and thought... Wiper, the War Demon sounds good... the cover is great also... and I get 2 books at the cost of one. So I thought I'd give it a try.
Best decision of my life. Now I have every book of the Finnish release, except 12 and 14. Still hunting for them though.

lol, are those so rare or are you just looking in the wrong places:happy:
btw, you can also let you send your missing books.
i did that with 11,12,13 cause in my local store those weren`t around(sucked so hard cause of the arlong endfight) and i had to read 15 and 16(also had 14 but a friend said i should start with 15 cause of a new arc-drum-) to that time before those other volumnes… -

And i need to search for them in antiquarian bookshops. I have on place where I have bought all but the two I mentoned before. Also I've looked from two other antiquaries for them, no luck. But good thing is that they're being reprinted in next three months :)

I have every volume as well myself except 14-19, 48 and 49. (I didn't start actively collecting them until from volume 20 onwards and I missed two volumes when I was in Englang for six months) A good place to purchase missing volumes is going to a convention and look for the Sangatsu table, since antiquarian bookstores almost never help me either.

Here in Portugal, the show was airing @ … 4 AM ... so i never really paid attention but i kept hearing OP this and OP that so i decided to download an episode and i chose 147: instant hook. Proceeded to download up to 163 which, from K-F @ the time was the latest one ... and then i went to the beginning.
Started reading the manga when it was @ chapter 388, if memory serves, and then started from chapter 1: it took quite a few hours to catch up to the latest one, @ the time.

moria epic back in time marine narvana then to CP9 then fast forward to impel down becuz Amazon lily sucked then im now going back in time to see episodes i didnt see on 4kids/funimation (flash buckls in later episode really help)

So I was wondering when everyone first heard about One Piece and how there first experience with it was.
Mine was kinda strange cause the first character I saw off One Piece was Nami in some hentai
I became interrested in the anime where she was from and found some clips on youtube with her fighting Kalifa. So my first expression was it was some action/hentai like anime lol I watch some more episodes after her fight and realized it was actually an interresting anime with cool characters (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji ). So I decided to watch all episodes from the start and watched them in like 1 week. When I catched up Luffy vs Luchi just started
After a few episodes I wondered how long the fight would last cause I started to find it kinda long, so I decided to find the next chapter in the manga. I found it and saw that Luchi would be beaten in the next episode, I was so angry at myself cause I spoiled the awesome Jet Gattling scene pff :getlost:From there on I catch up to the mange and watch APforums each week for spoilers and read the manga, and I also keep track of the anime each week.
Please tell your first experience with one piece and are there maybe even people here who have followed it from the very beginning ?? that would be great to hear
hahahahahahahahahahahaaaahaa

random note:
first spoiler-chapter where i was "up to date"" on the i-net was 320!
before i wrote the monthly to every 3 months released manga:happy: -
My first One Piece experience was in june 2001, when the first volume came out. Before that, I knew it because it was released on a Shonen Jump-like magazine or because it was featured in anime/manga-related magazine. But back then I always tought it was some crappy manga, just like many others.. stupid me.
That day (don't remember exactly which one) I was with a friend of mine in a comic store and he said to me "C'mon, pick up the first volume of One Piece!" "Naah.. it's crap" "Trust me, it's good!".
So, I went home with that first volume in my hand. One hour later, I was literally amazed, not that much for the characters or the story but instead for the atmosphere.. it was brilliant.Thing is… although I liked it so much since day one, to me it was just another manga among many others I was reading. One of my favourite, but that's it, nothing more nothing less. Two/three years later, somewhere during Skypiea arc, I started reading the scanlations (after Alabasta it began to came out every 2 months instead of just one and I wasn't able to wait that long).
Then… then, chapter 359 arrived.Bingo.
I don't know why it took me so long, before that one there's so many other awesome moment.. but in that very chapter, I understood. What I was reading wasn't just some manga, some story. I was reading the brilliant result of a genius mind.
I went back to chapter 1 and re-read the whole story with different perspective and realized that One Piece was completely something else. =) -

IT was in late 2002, a short while after I ha dmoved to Germany. My cousin had the german volume 1, so I looke din it, but I didn't speak any german, so I put it away after looking at a few pages. Some months later in 2003 after I could slightly speak german, I watched the anime in TV. I think it was the fight against Morgan and I became instantly hooked. SO I bouight the first volume and loved it even more. Than for my birthday I got volumes 2 and 3 and 27(The latest volume at the time), but didn't get any for while then, because I wanted to get them all together so I waited till I had enough money. I think we were at volume 33 at the time I got them all.
-
my first OP experience was online when mangascreener still scanlated it. At that time manga was hardly available in Holland, except maybe the dutch version of dragonball :getlost: I think they were somewhere around arlong park by the time I started reading it on mangascreener….. I'm not sure anymore but I was in high school year 2 at least, so about 8 years ago. When I was younger I loved the action and the comedy and later on I was moved more and more by the emotional scenes.
After scanlations' ridiculous quality and slowness started to piss me off I started downloading raws/chinese scanlations/whatever recent stuff I could find and "read" those along with stephen's translation scripts. It was one of the reasons I ever became interested in learning Japanese for myself I got caught up somewhere around the start of skypiea, which is also around the time my brother got a job near the only japanese bookstore in our country and bought my first volume, v27, for me. I started buying the Japanese version ever since then when they came out and on my trips to Japan I picked up the missing pieces.
-
I was introduced to OP for the first time a couple years ago, 2007. My friend was a huge fan and she was drawing some characters of OP. I was like "Well that's an interesting eyebrow" when she drew Sanji. XD
Then I tried the anime for curiosity. I loved it from the beginning (tho the style bothered me a bit at first) and caught up the anime soon (i think it had reached Thriller Bark back then). When I had no new episodes to watch, I started to read the manga. It was kinda strange for me, because I hadn't really read any mangas before. |D Now I too try to hunt all the Finnish editions. I'm missing volumes 11-21, I guess. And 33. :I
I owe that friend one. -
Well I was watching at RTL II while I was on a vacation in Germany, and I watched it to kill of some time, that was back in 2005 I believe. They were showing a lot of anime series but the one that really caught my eye was One Piece. It was the second fight between Luffy and Crocodile that I saw, and I was really interested in that anime however I forgot it for a while. After a few months I remembered the anime after finding it by chance on the internet and after that I discovered the manga and by the start of 2006 I started to both read the manga and watch the anime as fast as I got the chance.
-
Mine was kinda strange cause the first character I saw off One Piece was Nami in some hentai
Lol wtf
I saw it on 4kids and was all like "Hey pirates are cool"! So I watched a bit and hated it… But I always wanted to watch anime or read manga because my freinds did.
So two summers ago I researched One Piece, found out the Japanese anime was actually good and watched it.
Once I caught up with the anime I decided to read the manga, so I started with the manga from the beginning and am now also caught up with that.Yea.. One Piece was my first Anime/Manga...

There was this one time, at band camp, we were near the lake, and some fat chick came out in this really ugly swimsuit, and I asked the troop leader, What's that? And he said, that's a Walrus my son. I then pointed to the thing she was wearing and he said it was a one piece.
Oh wait…
-
I watched 4kids on foxbox and was instantly addicted. I watched it up until 2008 when it got canceled and then rewatched it the right way online from the start.
-
A friend of mine crashed his harddisk. and he was making list of things he lost. and suddenly he was shouting like crazy… "oh shitt, oh shitt i lost onepiece" lol.
We were university student side network admins those days. So we blocked off everyone's net due to 'technical difficulties'. and download whole OP in one day :D
that got me curious and started watching. This was my first anime too. watched whole within 4-5 days. caught up with manga during thriller bark. needless to say that i loved it
-
Mine was through 4kids…but after seeing it, I knew something was up with it. XD So I searched it online and saw the unedited version of Luffy vs. Crocodile's finale...I was in awe. I became hooked after that. I've even gotten a good number of my friends and acquaintances interested in the series. ^^
-
I think my actual first experience was reading an issue of Jump where Nami was fighting with Miss Doublefinger, but I didn't think much of it for a long time and probably had a very incorrect impression of what it was about.
Years later, I was browsing the graphic novel section of the bookstore and noticed one comic with a cover drawn in a style that caught my eye. I thought to myself, "Wow, this looks like it actually doesn't suck!" Turned out to be the first volume of One Piece, so I bought it, read it, and came back for more. I know most people think One Piece had a pretty slow start, but I liked it from the very beginning.
-
Okay, my first real experience was in americas shonen mag. I think it was during… Whichever arc had buggy's coverstory. I first saw it thinking this was crap, then finally sat down to read it and loved it.
Then my cousin told me how to get it online and I've been a nerd ever since. -
As much as I hate to say it, the 4Kids dub on Cartoon Network. I was like "Wow this sucks" then I saw the Funimation version when is started. I still didn't like it much, and then I saw the commercial for the uncut movie they did. My reaction: "Holy shit, One Piece can be uncut?!" So I checked out the movie and loved it uncut so I read and caught up to the manga.
-
my uncle dressed me as chopper and touched me till i had a funny feeling from where i pee.

That's somethin to remember. You were such awesome jerks.

epic story if true.

OP aired around 4, 4.30am in Portugal after Urusei Yatsura. Watched it every night, slept through 1st term classes everyday.
Oh and it was dubbed, dear god it was dubbed Q_Q
-
That's somethin to remember. You were such awesome jerks.
and DON proud of it
epic story if true.
ture story bro
-
My first experience, the chapter where Sanji was introduced, and I loved it.
(for a while I thought he was the main character :p)
-
i first saw my friend yumi, freshman year, drawing lucci. i was like, cool drawings yumi, and then she told me a little bit about one piece. i really liked her drawings of all the characters so i decided to download the series and give it a try, although oda's artstyle did throw me off a bit at first. :]
i did like it initially, but what sealed the deal for me was the alabasta arc. man. i just thought it was the most epic thing i'd ever seen, lol. i loved how everything from the grandline onward just completely built up to the ultimate climax of luffy beating the shit out of crocodile using his BLOOD. i was like, oh shit, this is so awesome! ^^; so for like six years now i've been a total one piece fangirl, always making my desktop backgrounds oda's color spreads and what-not.
-
I…. I can't remember. The earliest impression I had of One piece was waiting for the image to load on mangascreener. It took forever, since I only had 56k then. That was about 9 years ago? Can't remember exactly why I stopped. Might have something to do with me running the internet bill from $3 to $90. I was a poor student then (still is).
Anyhow, caught up on 9 years worth of One Piece May this year and fell in love with it again.
-
A couple of cousin's stayed with us after the earthquake in Kashmir in 2005. They used to watch One Piece and we (me and my brother) used to tell them to "stop wasting time and study!!". Anyway, they forced us to play truth or dare and well me and my brother both choose dare (partly because we didn't want to answer any question and partly because dare just sounds cool)…
Anyway, the dare was to watch One Piece for my brother and Avatar for me, we both did and later discussed it with each other. He said One Piece was the best thing he has ever watched (He had watched up to Arlong's Arc by then). That got me excited so I decided to give it a try.
I looked it up on the net and found out there were more then 200 episodes so I thought, "can't watch this many... and its still on going??" Anyway, I didn't watch it then but my brother kept nagging about it and finally in 2008 I started it and now, I have watched it like 4 times from start to end not counting the 3 times I have read the whole manga...
-
My first Experience was I dont remember how long ago, probably freshmen year so 6 or 7 years ago. I had been watching pokemon on, what, the fox box it was? then I started watching yugioh and got into the card game, but I still had no idea what anime was. it all started with the first volume of Shaman King that was on a catalog of books my sister got from school (this thing where they buy books from the schoool) I saw it and I told her to get it for me because it looked cool(I think the anime had started on tv) and I was drawing a connection with that and all these other animes. Then from there I bought shonen jump at a yard sale because it had goku on the cover and I think shaman king was starting.OP was barely starting too I skimmed through it and saw Buggy, I didnt think much of it til It started on TV (the 4kids version) and I loved it xD I then went back to my shonen jump and read it and it was cool, I subscribed and eventually caught up online after 4kids showed the arlong arc and I thought it was awesome.
-
I first seen it in some music videos, not sure when that was but it was <2003. First real experience with it was when I got a issue of Viz's shonen jump, august 2003 issue. Just found it to be silly at the time.(buggy arc btw) I didn't really get into it until Arlong Park and ranked it highly after Arabasta.
-
mine was back in 2005 (pretty sure). My younger bro had watched some anime for a while and I sneak-peaked a couple of times when passing his computer. I thought it looked totally ridicilous and childish (in a bad way).
Then me and 2 friends from high school started talking about travel and they suggested japan, which I at the moment didn't know anything about (it practically didn't exist on my mind map, for some reason I'd never gone further than China). So I started looking up the country, nature and culture and realized the 'anime'-stuff was japanese, so had to watch it for meself in educational purpose
What can I say, changing the attitude helped? One piece had me hooked for good.
-
saw it on 4kids. it was alright but I wasn't impressed at all. then like 6-7 years later I was reminiscing about old shows I watch on youtube and saw the end of the alabasta arc and I was like hmmm, wander what episode they're on now? it was like 257 they were on the sea train. and I was like WHAAAAA O_O THIS IS ONE PIECE?!
-
Read the swedish Dragonball volumes around 2002 and the guys translating it announced their new project which was One Piece. At first I was skeptic towards it since it didn't look like Dragonball but during a schooltrip I decided to buy the three first volumes and see what it was like and I loved it.
Bought up to vol. 28 but then I lost interest and forgot about it. A few years later I read up to the sea train in english one day when I was home sick. Forgot about it again. Started reading it again last year in January when I randomly watched a clip from Thriller Bark that sparked my interest again. Zombies in One Piece? Awesome!
Been following the manga weekly since then, started following the anime a few weeks later. -
I got interested in One Piece starting from One Piece movie 3. I was volunteering at Fanimecon 2002 and ended up watching this movie. I didn't understand Luffy's character at all. The movie displayed him as a happy-go-lucky big eater with no purpose being in the movie, but was somehow important enough to fight the bad guy instead of Chopper. The only character to grab my attention was Chopper. He was cute, quirky, shy, and innocent. It pretty much sealed my first impression of One Piece as a "kid's show" with some violence.
No, wait, the very first impression was the soccer special that came before it. I couldn't understand the ooohs and aaahs at each character, but it was pretty funny to watch, especially Sanji's goal kick (although I had to ask why his kick was so strong). It still appeared to be a silly show, and was too light and fanciful. Then again, Naruto just came out as an anime. It looked better. More badass and "real".
Anyway, it was 2 years later in college that I bothered to read the manga, because I felt like reading something with a lighter tone after reading Battle Royale (which is an absolute must read for manga horror).
I still remember when people still said that One Piece is overrated in 2002, as well as sexist and homophobic. It's fun to look back at those statements after committing our interests for this long and think "Oh how stupid were. We were totally wrong". It think One Piece tends to do that (thinks of 4kids).
-
Happened in 2005 for me, too. Although, that was when i bought shonen jumps for the soul purpose of reading Naruto =_=;
They were serialising the Arlong Park arc, and at first i was like 'This manga is uglier than the others'. But when i got to read Nami's backstory, and the scene where Luffy gave Nami his hat, i realised that this was the best freakin' manga in the book. I dropped Naruto soon after (WHAT A SURPRISE) and marathoned the One Piece manga online. Five years of being a One Piece fan… it feels good :D
Although, i suppose 'My first One Piece experience' could actually be back in 2003, when i bought an american Yu-Gi-Oh! magazine, and in the back was an article about One Piece. Seriously, until i found that article again, years later, i never realised that i had seen One Piece somewhere before. It had totally gone out of my head. I want to remember what i thought when i first read that article, but i can't...
-
Interresting that most people's first impression of One Piece isn't that great, but they returned to the serie after a while. Could it be that the beginning of the serie wasn't that strong ?? or maybe because alot of people watched the anime in their own language the first time which make it sound stupid ??
-
First experience was reading from a magazine, possibly a pokemon one, about 9 or 10 years ago that said it was a hentai about a boy that ate a squid tentacle to be able to stretch any part of his body….... Yeah...... After that it was 4kids. Kinda surprised I became a OP fan now that I think about it, lol.
-
4kids dub.
I loved it, but I couldn't stand waiting a whole week for a new episode (and sometimes they'd just run re-runs too)
So I went on the internet, found the dub and later switched to the manga at some point. -
You know, when I first read the manga, I didn't know how Luffy was supposed to sound, so I gave him Sean Schemmel's Goku voice XD.
-
My cousin told me about OP and that it was an epic story of pirates and stuff.
Then I read a review and saw some pics and was totally dissapointed: 'What's this shit, it looks like a cartoon for little kids and stretching powers pfff and the main guy doesn't look like a pirate at all.'So I dropped it. Naruto, Hajime no Ippo and other manga took my time, and then when I had nothing else anymore to watch and to read I downloaded One Piece just to kill some time. And here we are right now.
-
My first experience was actually when I was living in Japan on a university year out. As part of the degree I took a manga module and One Piece was one of the first materials we used. The teacher used the picture of Ben Beckman stubbing a cigarette in someones eye to illustrate the novel use of perspective and curved lines to indicate action blah blah. Ever since I was hooked, used to buy the Japanese volumes 5 at a time to help learning the language up until Bellamy was introduced which was as far as they had got at the time.
It was my favourite then and still is now.
-
My first encounter with OP was the german dub Anime, season 1 (I guess 2003?), an episode @ shells town. Back then I was bored, because it seemed childish to me (if it had been uncensored, I would have thought in another way of it, 4 sure!), although I liked the axe arm of Morgan (still lookin forward to Morgan's re-appearance in the main plot!). The next encounter was again german dub anime, the arlong park arc, it was in the middle of the SHs' fight against Arlongs men, and I thought "Cool! Tattooed fishmen! The tattoo of Arlongs Jolly Roger looks pretty awesome!" But, back then I didn't follow it like today, because I wasn't aware why they were fighting and I wished I would have seen that arc from the beginning. My lil sister told me what an asshole Arlong was and I thought again:"Wow, that Arlong is badassly awesome!" I was such a noob back then, I even thought Arlong was a shichibukai! LOL I guess my sister misinterpreted the awful german dub translation!
From the start of the Loguetown arc I watched every german dub OP episode. Smoker was my fav character back then and so I watched the german Anime until the end of season 1 (until Croc was beaten).
After that I followed the manga and was mindblown how high Doflamingos bounty was.
From the end of Skypia until vol 36 of the german manga I took a break, because I was busy with real life n stuff.
After that I bought vol. 37 of the german manga until vol 41 and read it.
But it took too long for me so I started looking up the japanese releases of the manga.
It was already @ vol 44, so there was sum stuff for me to catch up.
And since vol 45 I watched SJ releases on onemanga until chap 502.
And since chap 502 I watch the spoiler thread @ APF and sometimes I think "damn what a chap, I shouldnt have spoiled myself!" but I always look the thread up again, because I cant wait. whataweakme!
Btw I'm now 26 years old. I started watching OP when I was like 19.
