The jap culture sometimes pisses me off. Someone can achieve amazing results even if he celebrates New Year. For godsake people aint robots !
Bakuman
-
-
Hahahaha, so Bakuman moves into the psychological subliminal brainwashing of youth in Japan to become salarymen that work through New Years. This chapter makes so much sense now!
No but seriously, this chapter was underwhelming despite the high level of content it continues to produce. I think it's time for another love triangle to create some drama and take the focus off of the manga for a while.
-

Thats not Japanese culture.
That's the comics industry.
We don't get holidays in this line of work, and even weekends are pretty rare. I've taken off CHRISTMAS only 3 times in the last 11 years. And I know a guy who kept coloring with a broken hand.
Publication deadlines wait for no holiday or illness.
-
A thing that is always annoying me is how the red-haired karate girl (I don't remember the name of any of them) is ALWAYS doing whatever the guy with glasses wants.
He doesn't have any time for her, we never see any interaction between them apart from that wedding that was interrupted by the first editor (Satoshi, I think) and the honeymoon, and yet the girl does everything, and keeps that happy face of hersEither the writers are making her get ready to go mad, or they are very bad at writing female characters (Probably, cause there isn't any good female character on Death Note either)
-
I really like the idea of the "normal mode" and "crime mode" of the main character.
And the tool strap is a nice idea as well. -
Man it's gonna be pretty unrealistic if they don't have another "someone is burned out because they have been working too hard" plot, but I always felt like those made the series drag.
Screw realism, I guess.

Frankly I think they (the team) suck at writing female characters. The only awesome female character that I can think of from the two manga they produced is Naomi from Death Note.

The FBI agent, right?
Yeah, that was a good character, and very smart too, screwing Light before her suicide -

And the tool strap is a nice idea as well.agreed. The development of their character felt genuine and really surprised me. And, most of all, it WORKS.

@robbybedfart:
This series is boring to talk about, despite being so good. Throwing praise at it week after week. whie basically nothing actually happens is… repetitive. Its wierd that way.
That's why negative criticism is typically much more fun to read and write than positive criticism.
Anyway, yeah, this was a good chapter, but nothing too special. Nothing really made it stand out. Though I did like Eiji's dialogue as well as the evolution of their main character at the end.
-
Well, the thing was they were working like mad because the first chapter outlines the premise. It's pretty influential towards how many people will continue reading it, too, if it's good. They did mention "if this fails, it's all over" or something like that, which is why they were working so hard.
-
And yet another anime they saved from the jaws of Hirano Aya.
Can't be said for Fairy Tail…I'm surprised they didn't get her to do Kaya.
-

While generally true, I think they've really evolved in writing female characters in Bakuman. I HATE the females in Death Note, they all suck (I don't remember Naomi, sorry). The females in Bakuman actually have CHARACTER, LAYERS, and DEVELOPMENT. Yes, I'm annoyed Miyoshi doesn't get more her way, but she obviously wears the pants in that relationship. so I let it slide. But Aoki alone almost makes up for the shitty female characters of the past.
Even Iwase now is much more tolerable than she used to be. She's still a Goddamn Fucking Homewrecker, but now she's driven to write manga rather than just doing it to get into some guy's pants. And with a Harpy like Iwase on him, Miura may just become a better editor.

Watch Ratatouille much?
9IvnptQJ__U -
So he writes a whole story out on paper, and the other guy transcribes it into manga from his own imagination… I wonder if they employed this method when they did Death Note.
-
She's still a Goddamn Fucking Homewrecker,
The full title still amuses me every time.
Watch Ratatouille much?
9IvnptQJ__UMadam, I do believe I love you.
Though now I have the desire to go watch the whole movie, so perhaps I hate you.

I don't know about that.
Azuki is such a flat character who doesn't change much. Then again, she serves merely as a motive for Mashiro. Hmm, I forgotten about Aoki. Aoki certainly has come a long way compared to to the rest of the female character.

I remember reading somewhere that Ohba does the names. I could be wrong though.
-
Watch Ratatouille much?
9IvnptQJ__UHey, he wasn't wrong. And yes, I have seen and love that movie.
-
well i for one was really glad they finally referenced slam dunk.
not much else to say about this chapter.
art was okay. i really dislike ashirogi's old editor–he seems so damn incompetent.
even now, he doesn't really have any idea how to handle his authors at all. -

nope in death note volume 13 how to read Ohba says he he drew the names then the editor took editor took them to Obata and he drew the chapter from that infact i think it even showed one of Ohba's names
( another random deathnote fact Ohba and Obata never met while working on death note they first met after death note was completed making there relationship more Eiji/Iwase than Saiko/Shujin) -
@robbybedfart:

Hey, until she repents her actions in nearly destroying a relationship, she will forever be a Goddamn Fucking Homewrecker.
Anybody else excited to see what Fukuda's one-shot will be?
-
satsuki is just jealous
-
How is this series?
Death Note ended up being not very good so I'm wondering if this is better, worse, or the same.
-
They both end the same way, Eiji kills Ashirogi.
-

Aside from having the same creative team, this is nothing like deathnote in style, tone or genre, so its pretty unfair to compare the two.
Overall it seems to have a better balance and story progression though, with less likelihood to totally drop the ball in the end. The characters are definitely more fun in general.
-
Well, the character designs are similar, and that's about it. Original Ryuma and Current Zoro level of diferences.
-
My friend told me that Tsugumi Ohba recently suffered some minor injuries because of a car accident, and he wrote somewhere in WSJump to the readers saying he is still well.
Is this just some rumour?
-
Anybody else excited to see what Fukuda's one-shot will be?
I am! I don't think his oneshot will work out though. How is he going to get his current manga end?
-
…did anyone else get more excited than they should have upon seeing Kaya's teddy bear phone strap?
It ended up being nothing too important, but I was sure that it would lead to them coming up with Ba**kuma**n.
-
@CCC:

I've figured the name change to Bakuman would be because of the "alter ego" the main character has when he does his perfect crimes; this chapter hitting home on that since they gave him a seperate design. As a suffix, "-man" is used for names that work with functions, so all they would need to do is find some rhyme or reason for 'baku' to be applied to it. Then, when he is in Perfect Crime mode, he is Bakuman.
-
No mention of Eiji grilling Miura this chapter? That was my favorite part!
-
@robbybedfart:
Though now I have the desire to go watch the whole movie, so perhaps I hate you.
I don't know if take suggestions from around these parts seriously, but do watch it. I can honestly say it's one of my favorite films to come out of the pixar halls.
And yeah, Bakuman is awesome. So happy the volumes are coming out around these parts so I can actually send some money their way.
-

I've seen Ratatouille like a dozen times. Its one of my favorites movies. (Not just Pixar.) Hence the love of the clip… and then the hate from the impending loss of 2 hours.
-
That clip is what cemented Ratatouille as a good movie for me, because it's not one of my favorite Pixar movie.
As has been established, I'm an Andrew Stanton Pixar fan, so Brad Bird's movies aren't my favorites. I still love them, but I'll watch Wall*E instead, usually.

What about Brad Bird's non-pixar movies e.g. Iron Giant ? That movie's just sublime.

I should've known that our wolf-headed mod has impeccable taste.

I had a hard time getting past remy cooking, but I managed to do it in time… for the chefs to mass quit, when it was obvious who the new cooks will be. It was hard on me T_T

New chapter and all: http://www.onemanga.com/Bakuman/90/
Moriya and Shiratori remind me of too many people on this forum. It was nice look into the manga world and illustrates the distinction between Naruto and One Piece, one's made to sell, the other's made because the author enjoys it.
Perfect Crime Party…is pretty much the same as before. Character's names are cool.
And Nakai's a useless bum thus completing his character derailment.
-
I got tired and want this manga to end soon…but the topic the 2 assistants discussed was really the reason behind the manga existance.
-
I wonder if they'll ever find out their manga shares a name with an illegal narcotic
It seems Nakai is being geared up for his comeback
That sweater made me believe Shiratori was a girl at first (though the face and attitude even more so)
-
This post is deleted!
-
snirk PCP… Yeah, you just go with that guys...
I guess Nakai's being set up for getting off the bus at some point. He'll have to really turn over a new leaf to get his respect back.
And yeah, Shiratori's real androgynous. If I hadn't been forewarned, I defimnitely would've thought he was a girl in that first panel. The clothes and mannerisms are not helping.
-
Nother chapter of Bakuman, nother round of not really having anything to say. Plot movement, insight, art, lots of dialogue, etc. Nothing bad to say. Its hard when its consistently good, but also slice of life so there aren't ever really any huge surprises.
PCP as an abbreviation is kind of, uhm… druggy. But I guess its not a thing in Japan.
And Nakai will be coming back it seems. Well. It is a Shonen. Its all about facing defeat and then coming back stronger. Though maybe he needs to find an actual girlfriend FIRST...
I got tired and want this manga to end soon…
Then stop reading it and posting about it.
-
@robbybedfart:
Then stop reading it and posting about it.
I will do whatever I want, I wanna see how it ends whats your problem:getlost:…in my opinion is that the manga is becoming tiring.
-
I am less excited about Perfect Crime Party to be honest, I was very happy to see them quit Tanto, and seeimg Ashirogi to focus on serious/crime like manga but I think they try make it too main stream and aiming it to young teens (what is shounen jump primarily designated).
I think they should make it more…well serious and I really dislike main hero design, its good for a fighting manga but flashy cool like kid with...'super mode' dont really fit for theme.
But I guess Ashirogi has to be bit populist and try to be mainstream if they want to please as many people they can and aim for #1 and beat Niizuma.
I really think Ashirogi has totally wrong princibles to write manga, they should not write it to beat others and become #1. I agree with Moriya 100% when he told that manga artist should not worry popularity and questionarries too much.
-
If only one person has to pay for your job, and that's it, and it's a hefty sum, you can be a perfectionist.
But it has to sell, individualy and constantly, every person that buys it has to pay the same low price, how will you eat if you don't make it popular?
-

There's a line between self gratification and cancellation.
All working artists concede to it one way or another, or else they don't get work. If nothing else, there is the sheer "having to meet deadlines" aspect of it all that denies the ability to make every single panel a masterpiece and whatnot.
-
People act like popularity and a work being good are mutually exclusive.
-
As long as you aren't coloring furry porn, you haven't sold your soul.
-
but I think they try make it too main stream and aiming it to young teens (what is shounen jump primarily designated).
What? If you look at all of the current manga running in WSJ in both the Bakuman world and in reality, there aren't any manga like PCP; Hattori even said they couldn't beat Niizuma if they took the mainstream route. And of course they're going to aim the manga at young teens. It's called marketing to the target demographic. More children/teens read WSJ than anyone else, so if they were going to write a manga, of course it would have to be aimed at those readers. Why would they write something that none of the readers would read? Plus, if they wanted to do something more dark, like Conan or QED, they'd have to switch magazines.
@Shandian:I think they should make it more…well serious and I really dislike main hero design, its good for a fighting manga but flashy cool like kid with...'super mode' dont really fit for theme.
Have you ever seen/read Yugioh? It's pretty much the same deal. When you take on an alter-ego, you look differently, which helps emphasize your personality. If the main character just looked the same when he committed crimes, it would be a poor design choice because you wouldn't be able to differentiate him between his normal self and his criminal self.
@Shandian:I really think Ashirogi has totally wrong princibles to write manga, they should not write it to beat others and become #1. I agree with Moriya 100% when he told that manga artist should not worry popularity and questionarries too much.
Different people do things for different reasons; some people actually like aiming for being the best at what they do, thus being better than everyone else. If you want to be a successful mangaka, that's kind of the status-quo. Sure, you have to enjoy your job, and the art aspect of it, but unless you're competitive, something else that's better will come along, and you'll drop in the rankings and get canceled. Manga/Comics is not just art for you to enjoy making, it's a business where you have to survive, and in order to do that, you have to pay attention to what's going on (eg/ questionnaires, popularity polls).
-
so, refences to obscure foriegn films is no good,
but drug references are A-okay? -
Thats the difference between Oda and Obata-Ohba…and the difference between eiji and ashirogi-takagi. Oda has a vision to make an epic story. Those guys seek popularity and becoming No1.
