As I stated in the edits of my previous post, it's too much to write it down here. And also it's pointless to bother explaining because it would only attract much of unconstructive bash posts of people that are not able to tolerate that there's someone that thinks that Oda has fucked up big time (going by the standards we're used from him).
Not that I have a problem if people bash me (that's what my PM inbox is there for) but I don't think that it would do the forums good since I sense that it would be just a flame war in the making. So I hope you'll understand if I do not more but simply express my disappointment with it.
Am I the only one who see a problem, if such a comment is made on a OP discussion side. (And from Ivotas, of all people). Its why one piece fans have such a bad reputation.
Otherwise, my problems with the War arc lay in the second half mostly (like the degradation from the WB division commanders to only marco, jozu, partielly viesta and afterwards the fact, that all of the division commanders combined couldnt do anything about one admiral; or crocodils alien tsundere behaviour; the whole 2-DF-for-BB-thing, the aprupt ending with shanks and the DEM appearance of law). But Im far from saying that the arc was the worst or even crap, quite the contrary.

Shows how badass admirals are. Whitebeard, strongest man in the world, couldn't stop him either.

Shonen law says when the hero beats the villain, the villain is allowed to turn into a reluctant bad boy ally out of necessity and respect.
the whole 2-DF-for-BB-thing,
That's for sure going to be explained later.
the aprupt ending with shanks
that needed a little more, yes.
and the DEM appearance of law
Law arriving, and the rest of the supernovas, was blatantly foreshadowed like 15 chapters prior. There wasn't anything remotely DEM about it. If anything, their foreshadowing didn't pay off since the rest of them didn't do anything once they got there.

I honestly thought that I was the only one who thought this.
For once I sort of agree with Ivotas.
The War was probably my least favorite arc in all of One Piece. In fact, this flashback sucks balls too. I don't think I've been interested in One Piece in nearly two years.
I can see why the flashback is important, the last time we seen Luffy's past in my memory was at the beginning but I want to see Luffy recover and the next arc to be moving along soon. I wonder how long it will take for the crew to be reunited, even though we have had some good fights and met some great characters, it just isn't the same without the Strawhats.
I definitely miss the Strawhats. I, however, love the war arc, if because of Whitebeard. It fleshed out one of the greatest manga characters of all time. I think that the greatest emotional drive in the arc is from Whitebeard and his role as a great pirate and father. I recently reread the arc in one go and Ace's death didn't shake me nearly as much as Whitebeard's reaction and thinking of his emotional state. Then Whitebeard's death, which was inevitable from the start, got me much more than Ace's more unexpected end.
I liked the war arc overall, that's mainly because of Whitebeard and his Absolute Dignity. What could be more dignified than dying on your feet even though half your face was destroyed? My other reason was Shanks and his absolute epicness. He didn't even do much and he was still epic.
War's end was the only real misstep in the arc imo.
! And Ivotas didn't like this arc only because it's based on Ace :ninja:
Well I miss Leorio and Kurapica more than the SHs cause they havent appeared for more than 2 years…
Is it okay, to turn this HxH-Thread totally into a OP-Discussion? But anyway:
@robbybedfart:
Shows how badass admirals are. Whitebeard, strongest man in the world, couldn't stop him either.
At this point of the story, I didnt need a reminder, how badass akainu is. He had proven this point again and again. And dont forget, that marco and jozu had fought the admirals before by themselfs and a bunch of lesser division commanders had chased away kizaru.
Shonen law says when the hero beats the villain, the villain is allowed to turn into a reluctant bad boy ally out of necessity and respect.
Yes, but Shonen laws say also that, if the protagonist goes to a mission to safe his brother, who was captured by the bad guys, said brother wont be brutally murdered at the end.
And even if crocodile allied against the marines out of necessity, it doesnt explain, how he turned in a luffy bodyguard at the end of the war.
Law arriving, and the rest of the supernovas, was blatantly foreshadowed like 15 chapters prior. There wasn't anything remotely DEM about it. If anything, their foreshadowing didn't pay off since the rest of them didn't do anything once they got there.
It was foreshadowed, that the SN would arrive to watch from the distance, what the majority did as well. But not, that one of them traveled directly to marineford just to pick up a rival for no reason at all, while two admirals went all out against him.
You whine about Law's reasoning behind saving Luffy as being DEM, but if we take that as fact, many of the people Luffy has rescued has also been DEM.
Luffy gets rescued a lot, and as the war arc stated, his power is in his ability to make people turn gay over him.
I actually think that Jean Bart and his debt to Luffy was behind the rationale.
since I just started reading HxH this year the hiatus really hasn't affected me like most longtime readers, but this Ant arc is boring as hell (with the exception of the fight between Cell and Netero).. kinda wish that Arc woulda got wrapped up.
The main problem I had with the war was the pacing. I can't really relate to any of the complaints here no matter how much I think about them: the lack of straw hats was a breath of fresh air, and I didn't expect any future villains doing anything more than what they did. The purpose of the war was setting the stage for the second half of the story and it did a fantastic job at it; Luffy's underdog status and the huge catalyst for his upcoming maturity that was Ace's death, the hyping of Doflamingo and Akainu, the end of Whitebeard's era and the chaos that ensued, Blackbeard's rise to the top, all greatly done.
Now someone mention Enies Lobby so I can bash it.
Thats it Sanigo, 1st time I agree with you.
I like Enies Lobby .
There :ninja: (I realy do though)

garbage pacing, cardboard villains, deus ex power ups, and terrible fights for the most part.
I agree on the MHQ part only.
Now now , you wanted chance to rant about it and you're barely saying anything .
Next thing you know you'll be telling us the flashback was pointless :ninja:

the flashback was incredibly good.
heh, I've ranted so much about it in this forum I realized I don't really wanna spew the same garbage I always post in this thread too.
Off topic: You people need to read a manga called Gunnm (Known in the west as Battle Angel Alita). It's better than anything you've read before (except maybe Nausicaa) and it's not even that long. It blew my fucking mind away.
The chapter thread is plagued by a syndrome called "That's luffy's mom!" "No, It's Ivankov's spech pattern!"… itis.
…...what?
That was even up for debate?
I swear to God...
Tell me this shit is going on people, I will rain down on the morons like hellfire.
Not like you're always right either , Greg :ninja:
But dear lord yeah people keep saying that alot .
And just yesterday , someone "discovered" the thing with the two/three cups .
Yeah , yesterday .

when i read this i suddenly freaked the fuck out
im not even kidding

Wagomu I believe .
I mean it's not like it wasn't spawned over all OP forums for like two or three weeks now .
To me, The War was third or even second best arc-experience One Piece has presented to me since I started it back in the 2003.
Especially if you consider its miniarc length and its halfway landmark status.
And it following the average Impel Down.
This War accomplished quite a job to finish one stage and to prepare the other - both plot-wise and character-wise. Two world powers collided, one of them went down, leaving place to the further advancement of the other and the rise of new powers - which in practice turned out to be a shiny and colorful secondary character flurry. But in the midst of it, the focus still stayed on Luffy all the way through out - who went, who did, who lost - while prepairing him to star once more (which accidentaly continues in the current flashback).
And at the same time staying shounen to the very core, with non stop drama/action scenes - clear distilled One Piece.
everyone except you <3
Coming from Moria, sarcastically, this still confuses me to no end.

Stop right there. You're saying Impel Down is average…compared to the war....the boring war. Just wanted to make sure.

I understand what the war was meant to do/set up, but I don't think this setup was done in a very entertaining way.
Impell down was a little more dissapointing, in the first chapter of the arc we are faced with a terrible hell, the spiders, the torutre, the guardian beasts! and then.. Most of the evilness of the place was disolved, Ok, I get that this is a shounen, but don't bring up that the place is "hell" if your aren't going to go all the way with the hellholish status of the place.
Not like you're always right either , Greg
This isn't about a prediction.
I am and have always been defensive of people's predictions for the series outside of tentacle sex and Perona joining the crew.
The Japanese text in that panel was 100% undeniably Iva.
I don't think there is a single reader in all of Japan who read that and thought, "OMIGOD! THIS JUST MIGHT BE LUFFY'S MOM!"
How can I best put it in perspective? It'd be like having a shadowy figure laughing, "YAHAHA!", and everyone reacting, "HOLY SHIT ARLONG IS BACK!"
I don't usually post about One Piece but if everybody is going to talk about it in the Hunter x Hunter Hiatus x Hiatus thread I guess I have no choice.

I actually liked Impel Down quite a bit. It was fast paced, introduced a number of interesting new characters, featured many fun/badass side characters, and the hellish nature of the place was cool even if it was somewhat dropped toward the end. And, while I like the series, the cast exploring new islands can seem formulaic at times. Moreover, all of them have to have some sort of side story so the actual plot moves very slowly (obviously, this isn't necessarily a bad thing). I really enjoyed the differentness of Impel down and to a certain extent also the war (although, I do believe the war had some serious problems). Impel Down is probably one of my favorite parts of the series (which probably makes me a heretic)….
Oh, and it had okama power!

Shouldn't Hisoka be the Mad Hatter? Leorio can be the Caterpillar.
@Fire Fist:
Shouldn't Hisoka be the Mad Hatter? Leorio can be the Caterpillar.
Yeah, that's true. Although, given Leorio's status as a badass normal he should probably be Alice… But I guess no one wants to draw that.
Your evil plot fails for actually telling people that you linked there.

Curses!!! My whole elaborate plan, thrown into disarray, because of such an insignificant detail!!!
Very well, I set one card from my hand in the spell/trap zone and end my turn.
A great article BUT I question the legitimacy regarding OP's breaks. I counted at LEAST 22 breaks since 2003 (and that's not counting every issue for 2003-2005).I heard Oda worked straight for some ridiculous amount of time but even so I'm not sure that adds up.
Damn Gred those girls in your Avatars are so strange ;O…(well the one on the right isnt).
This ones arent as much as the others.
"Will Leorio ever… matter?" cracked me up.
:( i really liked Leorio shame hes been ingored latelly, well i think he was ignored since the begining he will become a Yamcha/Tenshinhan and disapear probably, hopefully not.
I don't understand the Leorio love. He seemed like a meh-character to me.
I want some Hanzo action.
I have sympathy for character that arent much used and i have slighty liking os its normal.
Yamcha was one of my favourite Dragon Ball characters so you get the idea haha.
Leorio is awesome…simple minded and funny reminds me of Lapidus from Lost.

First, thank you very much for the compliment.
Secondly, I did my research regarding breaks here. If you're the same Greg I've seen in the OP section, then you can navigate this site far better than I can, but for anyone interested, the section on the left labeled "ジャンプ連載順位" with a bunch of years under it is a collection of charts of Shonen Jump tables of contents. With those charts (plus my own chart, which does cover the part of 2010 that this website has not yet included), I counted the absences for OP, Naruto, and KochiKame myself to attempt to prevent any errors, but feel free to double check; if I have made an error, I'll be happy to correct it.
Thanks for reading. Here's hoping HxH returns soon.
I also hopes the hiatus ends soon so what we will see the arc animated.
It just started get ready for 3 months atleast imo.
I would LOVE to see more HxH anime eventually.

I'm pretty sure Oda did the first 100 chapters without a break. At least, thats a "fact" I've heard tossed around a few times. And he had less breaks earlier on that he has had since.
That Kochikame has never missed in 30 years is truly a credit to his discipline. Must have an actual buffer or awesome assistants or something.
Or you know. Sheerly loves what he's doing combined with a good work ethic. That helps.
