I expected a cliffhanger like that, but I was still biting my nails the whole time. I hate cliffhangers like this, but I suppose that's the whole point. My first thoughts before the chapter were that it would end on a vague decision cliffhanger, with the following chapter having the chief renegotiating their bet or something. Given his wording at the end, I figure it will be something like, "It's no good… it will need some changes before it can be serialized." But ultimately pass.
Bakuman

As soon as I saw they were going to do a majority vote, I KNEW they were gonna leave us on a cliffhanger like this. So yeah, really interested to see what the Chief has to say next week.
Also, it was pretty cool that they got the rights to "Last Christmas" even if it was just one line (although I have no idea what that Santa Lover song was, if anything).
-
I have no comment for this chapter. Bakuman always had cliffhangers like this, but geez. This on on a completely different level.
-
This was one of the best chapters ever, the suspense that was build up from page to page was brilliant and the cliffhanger is brutal.
-
Wise chief always wins.
-
Great cliffhanger. I'm expecting the editor to say something like "It's no good… if we don't serialise it!".
-
Wow. What a cliffhanger. For some reason, I get the feeling that he'll say "It's no good… I can't decide."
-
oh bakuman, you and your cliffhangers
-
This is a good manga, seriously.
And I like me some subtle hints.
@Miyoshi:
We'll be stuck to each other as soon as you leave, Mashiro.
when does the anime come out, anyway
This autumn, by J.C. Staff, I believe.
-
Great cliffhanger, much like Death Note, the cliffhangers here always put you through hell
-
I can't wait for the Chief to say "No… DOUBT!"
Then they proceed to party.
-
Good chapter. ANd whatta cliffhanger.
But, I was thinking this since last chapter, and this chapter makes it official for me. I know that Mangastream gets it out a day or two faster, but I'm going to wait for the Onemanga translations for Bakuman from here on out.
They read way better and more naturally. I can't quite place what it is about the mangastream version, but its a lot more stitled and akward sounding, and doesn't seem to translate the concepts quite as well. I suppose all the words are turned to English, but thats not all there is to a translation. There's been things that confused me during the mangastream read that were perfectly clear in the onemanga. Also, they don't bother translating random things. Like "Perfect Crime Club."
So I'll be a day or two behind on these discussions in the future probably.
-
damn… this chapter had my heart racing. Truly a good series right here. I really hope the anime will do it justice when it comes. Although I get the feeling that this is better read. Soooo much fit into one chapter.
Damn you Chief!! what'll happen next!!! arrrrgh!
-
I expect the chief to say "No…problem." followed up by the entire staff revealing ALF T-shirts.
-
the chief will probally say "no this title is bad it has to be changed, but other than that it passes" and then they will rename it bakuman
-
Robby, I'm translating differently than OneManga because they over-simplify the translations and leave things out. I dunno what's confusing to you, could you give me some examples and I'll translate that stuff differently? I really been trying to make everything read natural.
Normally, manga titles aren't translated in the real world, so I'm not translating them in my translation. It's really disconcerting, I thought I was doing well with this, despite it being like a novel every chapter…Incidentally, I'm almost done with this week's chapter... it's really good.
-
New chapter is up
http://www.onemanga.com/Bakuman/87/01/! lol natural totally gonna screw up with miura as editor
-
Great chapter, I liked the twists..
I hope
glossy blackemoness doesn't become a part of a certain characters persona though… -
Great chapter.
! I loved how all the editors turned around upon the realization of "hey wait. this is it forever for this talent if we say no to them based on this. We're in charge of lives here!" which f course ties back to whats been said time and time again. Also that the chief remained the "no" vote. "Well, if it was 7-0, it'd be one thing. But we can't affect their lives this harshly arbitrarily when its THAT close…"
! Hattori and Muira switching places makes a lot of sense too. It should largely help Hattori's problem with his stalker homewrecker writer.. but why does he seem so nervous about being editor for the leads? What do his awesome instincts tell him THIS time thats problematic? -
! I think that Hattori is worried about Natural sufering, not Perfect Crime Club.
Besides, I think that Miura will be the one who takes care of the stuck up bitch and turn her into a decent person -
By marrying her.
-
By marrying her.
No, by switching her pencil case to another one without her noticing. That'll teach her!
-
Awesome chapter.
Talk about unexpected plot twists!
-
Loved this chapter, it was pretty great. But I wonder what's up with Hattori?
-
If you're a fan of the series you have to love this chapter, it highlights everything that's good about it.
Now that Mirua's gone I wonder what they're going to do with him seeing as hever really improved as an editor. Is the moral going to be "If you suck at your job get advice from other, more talented people and do nothing yourself"?
-
I have the feeling this series' not gonna beat Crow or Natural, manly because even after it being 6-1, the boss didn't change ideas.
-
@robbybedfart:

He probably likes her now or something. Either way, imagine the drama of him going from her side (editor) to her MAIN rival's side (editor)? I don't think she'll see it as a "challenge" like Eiji will, so it could hurt +Natural and in doing so hurt Eiji and Miura. Since it was Hattori's complaints that caused the change, he will blame himself if Miura, Eiji, and even homewrecker all get affected by that change.
-
^exactly, I'm loving the prospecting waves this change will cause!
-
Bwahahahaha! Goddamn Fucking Homewrecker just lost her latest obsession.
That's probably what Hattori is most worried about. Once he leaves her she'll throw a fit (because she can't accept defeat gracefully), and everyone's work will suffer.
Unless Miura and Eiji band together to bitch-slap her back to reality.
The first half of this chapter was excruciating. Will they or won't they? Thank god they did, whee serialization. And lol at eating the cake with their hands.
-
Editorial meetings and department office work.
Boring to the letter. Why is this so fun to read again?
I'm officially convinced this is the best of Ohba's work.
Yes, Bakuman is better than Death Note. -
I wonder how the Bakuman anime will look like. This serialization meeting will be made EPIC with epic music and shaking camera and stuff. And loud breathing. Like the Death Note anime, only even intenser.
-
"This is no good!" - shouts the editor-in-chief.
And silence is ripped to shreds by a gay j-rock escapade.
-
I'm officially convinced this is the best of Ohba's work.
Yes, Bakuman is better than Death Note.Considering the extremes of counter manipulating it needed to work at times, how terrible Death Note was in the second half, and how unlikeable large chunks of the cast were… not that hard to do.
That this series is running on all cycliders is undeniable though. Incredibly shonen to its core... without action scenes.
-
Bakuman is pure shonen, there's no denying it. A manga about creating manga has somehow discovered the heart of the genre.
-
I definitely like Bakuman waaaaay better than Death Note. As said, half the cast in DN is unlikeable, whereas there are very few unlikeable characters in Bakuman. Except maybe that lewd loser from their school days (the one that tried to get Aoki to do porno shoots).
Yes, even Iwase is more likeable than unlikeable. For all she's really annoying.
-
Iwase is unlikeable on purpose, you were suposed to LOVE Misa and Near.
-
Another awesome chapter. Although, maybe it's just me, but I thought the whole thing with the editors chaning their votes was kind of random. I mean, did they really just suddenly realize "Hey, these guys won't be able to write for us anymore. We can't let that happen!"
Oh well, aside from that, it was still great. I loved how they just ate the cake with their bare hands because they were so excited. And yeah, Hattori is their editor again! Not to mention I'm just as interested in how Miura being +Natural's editor is gonna play out.
As for whether I like Death Note or Bakuman more? Yeah, I'd say I like Bakuman more. Not only are the characters more likeable and the story has stayed consistently good, but I also am more a fan of happy upbeat stories in general.
That being said, I don't think Bakuman is ever going to be as popular Death Note. The thing about Death Note is that it had an interesting angle with the whole concept of the Death Note, delving into the supernatural, and the dark nature of the story (not to mention the battle of wits thing).
-
It's the sad truth. There are a lot of series that should be more popular, but aren't.
Hopefully when the anime comes out the manga will get more exposure. Has this been licensed stateside yet?
-
Death Note is kind of marred by the shit-tacular second half. :/
If not for that, I'd rate it above Bakuman without a doubt. With it, Bakuman edges ahead.
-
Deathnote really should have ended after
! L died and Light was left victorious
Is that even a spoiler anymore?
-
@robbybedfart:
Is that even a spoiler anymore?
Hardly.
Anyway, I am glad Light did eventually lose and Near was a pretty cool character (though not as good as L). It almost makes the second half worth it.
-
I treated Death Note as a time-waster. I liked it, but I wasn't hooked. All the dialogue wasted a lot of time, especially on trips.
-
I trully liked the ending of the movie, of L outsmarting and defeating Kira by himself, but alas, the series HAD to go on.
-
I liked the series better than Bakuman, it was great in the Manga, it was only rushed through in the Anime on the second part
Aside from the last episode, nothing was good in the second half when it comes to the Anime
-
Aside from the last episode, nothing was good in the second halfwhen it comes to the AnimeFixed that for you.
It officially lost me when they started using rockets.
-
Yeah, it seems I'm in the minority here, but i loved the second half almost as much as the first half, it had plenty of genius things throughout.
The only part I remember not liking was, in fact, in the first half, right before L's death, with the huge mess that ended with the "Just as planned", I laughed, a single tiny little bit of difference between what Light predicted and what would happen would be enough for Light to never remember ever again he was the Kira.
Near also had a lot of luck, but hey, at least it was established that he didn't plan all the steps before.
-
i liked hikaru no go better than both
-

I actually liked Light's "just as planned" in the first half more than Near's in the second. At least Light's only required him to figure out what he himself would do in a given situation, and he had two shinigami helpers, at least one back-up plan in case something went wrong (such as Misa forgetting L's real name), and was in a position to influence the events that would lead to his back-up plan working (by turning the conversation towards what would happen to Misa).
Near's plan required him to know what everyone, including Light, Mikami, and Light's investigation team, would do at any given point, and he had no outside help (since Mello was working on his own) or apparent back-up plan, yet he still won. It didn't help that there was absolutely no foreshadowing as to Near replacing the Death Notes, or someone in his group being able to create an exact copy of the notebook with identical handwriting literally overnight, or any of the other details of his plan.

But Near's plan went by luck, and Near was expecting it to go by luck
Light, on the other hand, had EVERYTHING planned out, and there were so many if's in that plan that it was just too laughable
Near was not foreshadowed, basically so we would be surprised when this didn't turn out to be another easy win for Light, but it was far less ridiculous
-
i liked hikaru no go better than both
Except that Hikaru no Go had a different author. Same artist, but different author.
