Shueisha wants to get rid of free online manga

Photos of pages of Japanese comics: SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS.

@Tokoro:
It's never going to end. Take down one raw provider, another will pop up in it's place. This is just like the dawn of MP3s and the manga providers have two options: go legit or face the consequences.
There comes a point when the technological barrier becomes a challenge again, as with people's resistance to IRC. When the manga becomes tougher to obtain / less convenient there will be a drop in online readership. For many, it'll just be too much of a bother to go and read the manga, gone are the days of omae's mail-order Evangelion VHS.
Not that I'd object to some drop-off…I don't think inanity like the Kubo Twitter thing would have happened in 2005-2007. But I'd hate to see manga/anime forums become graveyards, especially since former fans and main-streamers become so pernicious and pejorative to current fans.
@Tokoro:
Besides, Shueisha lets at least one of their mags have online manga…yeah its nothing in the magazine but it proves that it can be done and that they just need to get it done.
The word is tolerates, and it's only because of VIZ Media only because I think a certain someone is putting in a good word for online pirates.
-
Looks like I have to stop reading Manga online
!
-
I'd pay for a simulmanga.
But until then, I'll keep supporting the official releases of Jump and the volumes that we get here, and hitting up Mangastream every week. There is not a chance in hell that this message is going effect the state of scans/scanlations.
-
translation by Kirjava: (maybe someone can do better one)
and about mangahelpers
they sayThe thing about the French is that they have up-to-date and really good translations. I bout 3 volumes of GTO and they had a bunch of Clamp stuff that I haven't seen in American stores!
But I agree, I'd be willing to pay a bit to read manga online if it was up-to-date and uncensored. -
It's only about time for Al-Qaedah to attack Shueisha. I hear Osama read manga.
-
-
So they'll start targeting sites like Mangafox?
Guess i'll start archiving some of my favourite series and download the newest chapters from now on.
-
@The:
Are you sure, sir?
Do you know how Asians like me read Spider-man and get angry over One More Day?Link me
I'm thinking if this has been going on I would've already came across such a great site that's basically the American version of OM or do you just d/l the scans?
-
So they'll start targeting sites like Mangafox?
Mangafox it's crawling with virus anyway.

Damn, just remembered something:
Awww, this should have been the first reply to this thread.

I can see entirely why the'd want to do so.
But otherwise this is fucking insane ! -

This latest asinine, self-righteous, "Stop, you evil-doers!" mandate is nothing new and nothing special. It's just more of the same manipulative rhetoric that's been coming out of Japanese culture's sh*t-hole ever since the Japanese switched from their policy of "do what we tell you and don't ask questions" to "do what we tell you because if you don't you're evil." Shueisha, just like all other Japanese businesses, thrives off of the unique ability they have within their country to play off people's consciences in order to make a greater profit. Not to say companies in other countries aren't just as guilty of that, but for some reason the Japanese are just more susceptible to the guilt-trip.
Shueisha is just using the classic trick of focusing on only one aspect of a situation to exaggerate the facts. "You selfish people are stealing from the mangakas who worked so hard to bring you your manga!" Hm. Even if we forget about the rest of the world and the situations of people in countries where manga isn't available and just focus on Japan - what about the millions of people living in areas of Japan where there are no manga stores? Where they'd have to pay for a three hour train ride every week just to get their chapter? Are they such unrighteous people for downloading a chapter? Or what about kids who simply don't have the money to buy them? Or all the repressed, hard working Japanese citizens who just want to get a little bit of happiness each week from their favorite manga…Shueisha takes advantage of Japan's legal system and of the Japanese value system to take that little bit of happiness away.
And then there's that crap they spout about this "hurting the mangaka's souls" which just shows what capitalizing liars they are. Oda was just recently considering ending One Piece because it was getting so long that a lot of kids couldn't afford it. He was devastated that kids couldn't purchase his manga because it cost too much and he even decreased the number of pages in volumes so that they wouldn't cost as much…Yeah, he's really hurt that kids aren't emptying their pockets for him.
Oh, and Oda's a multimillionaire, so even if every person in Japan switched to reading his manga illegally he'd still be okay (although the publishing company would have a problem).
-

Reason #5687 for my "List O'Reasons Why I Love Eiichiro Oda"
Shonen Jump is currently combining three volumes into one, which cuts on price, but I'm going to wait for the eventual complete box set of One Piece. -
…Case in point, like others have said, manga needs to become legally available for download. Paper publishing has already become an obsolete business and Shueisha knows it. That's why they're trying to squeeze every last drop out of the market before they're finished.
It's just funny because Oda doesn't need them anymore, but they're trying to make it seem like he does. And it's also laughable that this greedy corporate giant is acting like it's some poor victim. I mean...really. Their puppy dog face fits them about as much as it fits...
-
Wait, like seriously considering ending the manga? o_O
I see his point, but this is a story that can't be ended like that!

That's bullshit. The volumes still have the same number of pages and it costs the same as always. Y420 like all Shonen Jump series.

I'd be impressed if he was all of that, even though it'd suck for him.

I just had a strange thought. Does anyone think that shuiesha will go as far as to use their manga for propoganda against piracy? At least in a series that it makes sense, such as Bakuman.
Editor-in-Chief: While we'll discuss about Ashirogis new manga, let's remind ourselves of the trouble we have to make it successfull. IT'S BECAUSE OF PIRACY THAT OUR COMPANYS FALLING!!.
Shujin: It's true, piracy hurts the sales of this company, taking away the money our precious mangaka rightfully earned for their hard work. If the foreigners will go as far as to do that for their own lack of patience, the people here will be influenced by it too.
Saiko: IT HURTS OUR SOULS!!
EIC: That's correct! Piracy is bad. Because of that, we will combine all manga companies power to stop this. BY MAKING A MANGA-SAKOKU!
Ashirogi: NIPPON ICHI!!Just kidding….but still, the possobility :-o

I like to rant. Too bad.
The thing that ticks me off about that editorial is that all the information in it is completely exaggerated, it consists of nothing but cheesy lines meant to make people feel bad when there's really nothing wrong going on at all, and it's actually making some morons feel bad. Sure, looking at online scans instead of buying the manga is a contradiction of how a business system should work, but that's all it is. It isn't some great moral issue equivalent to silence of the press, or election fraud. Oda is already extremely wealthy and illegal downloads of One Piece are not going to hurt him, or his soul. They're only going to hurt Shueisha - who doesn't actually do anything for One Piece except put the SFX in. They're using "moral issues" as a way to to stay in business for themselves even though the digital age has made them completely unneeded…And you know, that actually does sound a little conspiratorial to me.
If they'd just stick to the "it's illegal" argument I'd have nothing to say.
-
I am so scared! sarcasm
-

No they don't.
and it costs the same as always. Y420 like all Shonen Jump series.
And that's BECAUSE Oda put his foot down and made a conscious choice to do something because he didn't want the price to rise.
For a while Oda was occassionally throwing in a bonus 11th chapter because he felt it was a better stopping point there.
He was informed that, due to rising paper costs, from now on, having an 11th chapter would increase the price of the book like, 25 cents. And so he said, in SBS, "well, from now on its just always going to be 10 chapters. The bonus 20 pages were nice, but not if it ends up costing people extra, then its not a bonus."
And for the… two years? and 8 volumes since then? Its been 10 chapter volumes. (And its why they cliffhangered on Zoro being Kuma-ed, and not all the Strawhats being Kuma-ed, which was a MUCH better cliffhanger)
Actually. The most recent actually had 11 chapters again, but thats because they were 15 page chapters all year, instead of 17 or 19.
They're only going to hurt Shueisha - who doesn't actually do anything for One Piece except put the SFX in.
You have no fucking idea how publishing works.
Editorial, advertising, printing, distribution, and licensing. Oda can't do any of that on his own. Oda sells books, no doubt, but he doesn't, by himself, make the entirety of Jump, it's staff, or its 60 year history or circulation.
-
Wait a second…Oda doesn't put the sound effects in? Then that means he's not responsible for the famous Dons!!!
-
@robbybedfart:

Editorial, advertising, printing, distribution, and licensing.
What I was saying is that if One Piece officially went digital, like it should, the printing and distribution would no longer be necessary. And after that, Oda could just higher a much less demanding publisher for the licensing and editing. And he'd still get plenty of advertising done through the anime.
-

….. I don't even begin to know where to start, and I don't want to blow 3 hours, so I'm not even going to try, aside from the fact you really have no idea what publishing entails if you really think the artist is 100% of the battle, or if you think completely ditching the paper format entirely at this point in time is actually a good idea. (when it sells 3 million copies every week...) There's a huge amount of business end on things you clearly aren't aware of.
Also. Even if Oda wanted to go to another publisher (and why the fuck would he want to leave one of the most successful, highest selling, prominent manga publishers in the biz? And the best animation studio most suited for daling with his work?) there's a thing called contracts.
He probably couldn't leave, even if he wanted. Certainley not with One Piece, at any rate.
(I also have no idea where you get "less demanding" from? He's at the fucking top, and he still gets to take a skip week like every other month, and do 5 page chapters, so he can work on side projects. Thats as leniant as it gets in weekly publication. And its HIS decision to not include 11 chapters in a volume due to the price, not the publisher.)
-
@robbybedfart:
why the fuck would he want to leave the most successful, highest selling, prominent manga publisher in the biz?
Shueisha is not even number one, Shogakukan (2) and Kodansha (1) are both larger than it with more (as in, greater number of) successful anthologies.
Shueisha really only has Jump, which was its top selling anthology and overall top. It wasn't even the first though, IIRC Magazine is a few years older, but Jump's initial comics were a lot more popular.
This is why Jump's decreased circulation is such a big deal, although if one considers that Jump became popular because its initial manga challenged Japanese culture of the day (portrayed as unique/interesting) and since those times it's become a lot more PC, to the point of censoring One Piece while still continuing its barbaric Darwinian trial by fire for new mangaka, it's not surprise - Shueisha refuses to adapt because it's full of arrogant old folks or arrogant legacies.
@robbybedfart:

He could leave (snowball's chance), but OP would not go with him. I can't even imagine what would happen if he dared - would kids stop reading OP? Would Shueisha implode, or would they continue along with the new author as if nothing happened?
-
Okay…I probably went a little over my head with this. It seems I'm undereducated in the publishing field, so I'll take the high ground this time and stop now. If I can leave you with something, it's this:
If Shueisha is going to be making arguments against piracy, their argument should be that they need people to buy the books so that they can afford to keep on publishing them, not that it's somehow morally wrong and is hurting the wealthy mangakas. They should just be more clear on that. And on that note, they could be a little more reasonable and not make such a big deal over spoiler cam pics or people who read manga outside of Japan where it's not so easily available (if it's even available at all).
-
Fair enough, Terek.
Why would Oda want to leave one of the most successful, highest selling, prominent manga publishers in the biz, when it comes to Shonen, the genre he loves best? Particularly when its Jump, and that has to be like, his dream. What with the Dragonball thing and all…
If Shueisha is going to be making arguments against piracy, their argument should be that they need people to buy the books so that they can afford to keep on publishing them,
Well… yeah. But you know. Having respect for your audience? Talking to them like mature adults? Its tough, and no industry does it. Especially not one that is... mostly aimed at little kids.
not that it's somehow morally wrong and is hurting the wealthy mangakas.
Except that it IS morally wrong and hurting the authors. And I dunno about "wealthy", for most of them.
Were they incredibly over the top in the way they said it? Yes. Being narrow minded in comparison to the rest of the world and at fault for not changing their own buisness plan to match the times? Yes.
But they DO have a legitimate point in there. A badly stated, over-exagerated one, but they do have a legit point.
And on that note, they could be a little nicer and not make such a big deal over spoiler cam pics or people who read manga outside of Japan where it's not so easily available (if it's even available at all).
They don't give a shit about the overseas audience and that statement was never adressed towards us to begin with. But anyone that actually lives in Japan and can get access to the extremely CHEAP magazine? If they're bootlegging, they are tools, pure and simple.
-
@robbybedfart:
They don't give a shit about the overseas audience and that statement was never adressed towards us to begin with.
So why are there all these fruitcakes who don't live in Japan acting like they've committed some wrong by downloading One Piece? Like the raw-paradise owner (not that I liked her digi-marked OP scans to begin with anyway)
-
Because if you don't buy it when it's available in your area you are doing something wrong.
But it's mostly because they don't understand that it wasn't aimed at them. Or maybe they have high morals, I don't know. I own every volume released in the U.S. and the only thing I feel bad about is maybe getting the chapter later. But after the first time they're delayed, 1 week is 1 week regardless of what day the count starts on.

Okay then, I've got it. Since 99% of Japanese people can't speak any other language for shit, sites like mangahelpers and raw-paradise could just require that you answer some randomly generated questions in English, Spanish, Chinese, or some other non-Japanese language before you can download manga. That would completely keep the Japanese out.

That would also screw over a good deal of the people who post translations on that site.

No. As evidence, we currently have spoilers for the newest chapter.
I seriously hope people don't start freaking when there are no new spoilers or anything next week because of the holiday and think it's the end of online manga. But I imagine some people will.:getlost:

-

Uh no. They can't. Even most of the "English Teachers" in Japanese schools can't speak English. They're infamous for it. All they do is learn a bunch of English words and choke on their tongues trying to pronounce them.
-
Well. Not counting Greg, anyway.

Chopper's Trivia Point!: Arlong Park (forums and site) gets a huge amount of traffic from Japan, a majority at times. It's because of people looking for access to RAWS, 2channel is even infamous for having a thread on how to navigate Arlong Park to find them.
Blocking access to RAWS won't do good, it's like trying to ban someone from a forum, they're just IP around the problem, find a mirror, or something.
I don't see any reason for people to want the RAWS except for knowing what happens in OP ahead of time. In years past, we got RAWs alongside the release of the magazine, not before with spoilers several days before like it's been for a while now.
If getting early OP is the primary incentive to pursue this, there is no cure to the problem. Print WSJ earlier? Shift the same cycle up earlier in the week as well.
I mean, let's assume Oda had a stockpile of 500 OP chapters he's already made and was going to release them en masse…would people prefer that, a bulk sum now, or prefer waiting another 10 years to find out what One Piece is?
-

Uhm… people get the spoilers because of transport time between the printer, warehouse, and delivery to stores. Thats the case with any commercial product. Printing the mag earlier wouldn't do anything to change that.
And no. 500 chapters in one go would suck. Part of the joy is the journey. The anticipation, the speculation, the ability to really study each chapter. Literature loses something when you do a mass read in one go.

I've watched people on the internet binge on stuff, there was one maniac who finished Legend of the Galactic Heroes in a week. I know I finished Ideon over a couple days; unless the subbers are the limiting factor, people online tend to take the binge route, even for long protracted dramas. Something designed for children like OP? Kid's stuff.
Offline, it's different. I have a hard time imagining someone's going to buy 100 tankos for the entire series in one go. But online, where it's fast, convenient and easy, it's a different tale.
I think the online culture leads to this…
Check out this funny comic that summarizes my opinion succinctly!
-
Not everyone here only reads raws to see the chapter "ahead of time." I only read the raws. I never read scanlations. It's way better to read the story in the author's words.
-

Agreed. Hell, the only reason I read the scanlations is because I'm lazy.

Ah yeah. I misread what you said a bit.
I've watched people on the internet binge on stuff, there was one maniac who finished Legend of the Galactic Heroes in a week.
I'm not saying doing a lengthy series all in one go is a bad thing. I've done my fair share of binges, especially with webcomics and dvd box sets. But its a very different experience from getting something from week to week, or having to wait for the next installment.
I saw all of the first season and ahalf of Avatar: Last Airbender in one big go over a weekend. ANd then I had to start waiting for the next bits, speculating,w aiting, and being teased by previews as to what would come next, and talked to other people about it, and it was very different and I got more out of the series than I would have in just one sittign for all of it. Then it would have been a case of "well, that was good. What next?" instead of the ingrained experience it was.
Both ways are valid, and both get entirely different experiences. Particularly with something that takes 10 years to come out as its made, and you experience it along the way and grow with it or it becomes a part of your routine or whatnot. And most stories are meat to be told so that they can be experianced in close proximity at the end.
It varies. I wouldn't mind Naruto or Bleach releasing all its remaining chapters next week. OP I'd be a bit sad that it was over.

In the latest edition:
Raw-paradise already has removed all her scans and wrote "the end" on her site.
Well, I'll be 100% ok with that the day I'll be able to get an English or French edition of the Jump featuring the very last OP chapter. Untill then, just f.. [as we say in France : "Go and boil an egg"].
I'm sure they would find a lot of people who wants to work hard to translate the Jump in several languages as a full-time job, and I'm also sure they would find even more people who would love to buy that sheet of paper each week all around the world, and reap even more profits by doing this.
