Do you like the Funimation dub better or the original Japanese version better? Personally, I'll just say it, I like the dub better. It's the only anime that I think has a better dub than original. What about all of you?
Funimation Dub vs. Original Japanese
-
-
What is this, I don't even. Does this need its own thread?
-
English dub is awful compared to the original, sorry
-
The manga.
-
The dub is okay, but it's not even Funi's best work much less better than the original.
-
There should be a "Both Equally" option, because I am unable to vote right now.
-
Hm, dub is good but I started OP watching the original Japanese. Because of that I can't help but prefer it.
-
I love both dubs equally.
-
They both give the same story without sacrifice. I love them both.
Funimation does a better job dubbing other shows like Sgt. Frog though.
-
No one has anything on Mayumi Tanaka.
I fell in love with a lot of the japanese voices so when I heard the dub and they weren't as good or better, I was kinda =/ I like them both but I side with the japanese a bit more because theres some AMAZING voice talents there.
-
I prefer the Japanese. But the FUNimation dub is great in itself.
No one has anything on Mayumi Tanaka.
QFT.
-
I greatly appreciate Funimation for putting thought and choosing a fitting cast.
but nothing can emulate Mayumi Tanaka IMO. She really makes Luffy… well Luffy
it's just NOT the same otherwise
-
I agree that Mayumi does a better Luffy.
…..But I like Chris Sabat's Zoro....
runs away
-
I was expecting posts like this. I understand why people would like the original better, but really I like the dub better. It's the only anime where I like the dub better. I do really like the original, but I just slightly like the funi voices better. But everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
-

I second that. Tanaka's talented and all, but as much as Luffy makes up a good chunk of One Piece, that doesn't make up for the rest of the cast. A good chunk are good, a good chunk are meh.
Personally, I'm at a mind set where FUNi gets stuff right that the Japanese version doesn't get, and the Japanese version gets some other stuff right than FUNi can't emulate. But, they both generally have good acting. So…
Yeah. I just can't choose. I watch both, so I get the best of both worlds.
-
Yes, sorry, but I can't make a vote on this. Both the dub and the original have good qualities and quirks the other doesn't. I think both do a superb job overall for their target audiences (Japanese and English speakers) and I personally think things need to be changed slightly in order to meet the target audience the product is geared towards.
This is not the same, however, as kiddifying a show just for profit, as a certain nameless company does.
-

I third/(fourth?/fifth?) that. I think both are pretty good. Most people who like the Funi dub will most likely also like the Japanese version (come on, it's the original). The only people likely to vote are people who only strictly like the Japanese version.
-
I don't even see how 'equal' is a valid stance. Most of Funi's VA's are 'acceptable substitutes'. A few of the best ones, like Sonny and Brina, are 'equally good', but then you've got Eric Vale's Sanji bringing down the average.
Throw in some questionable voice direction, script work that took too long to find it's niche, and the omission of all our favorite laughs, and 'equal' seems like high praise indeed.
Compared to other Funi projects, One Piece is hardly their greatest work. Off the top of my head, Baccano and FMA blow it out of the water when it comes to producing a quality adaptation.
-

same here, I can't really say I like one over the other. Of course the original is good but FUNi's version has its good qualities too
-
By "Both Equally" I am being reasonable and believe rightly that each version is equally as good at making the show quality for the respective demographics (The Japanese version is produced for Japanese People, English produced for English-speaking people)
-
They're both good. You can't compare the two.
-
While the Funi dub seems to be doing the original justice.
The original is all kinds of epic. No contest. -
I like both versions. Each version has its highs and lows.
-
They're both good. You can't compare the two.
Actually you can do that pretty easily.
I prefer the majority of the voices in the original to the English. I like Tatum's Enel, Sonny's Usopp, McFarland's Buggy, and quite a few others…but overall for me, the original is better.
-
I like Funimation's dub.
I like the Japanese dub better.
-
The dub is okay, but the original Japanese is definitely much much better in my opinion.
-
I like both, but I picked the dub because I know it'll be on the losing side here.
-
but then you've got Eric Vale's Sanji bringing down the average.
What's wrong with Eric Vale's Sanji?
-
Yeah I like Eric Vale's Sanji. My favorite is probably Brina's Chopper though.
Also, is it possible to add an option to the poll? A lot of people want a both equally.
-
Okay, this is a hard question. You're making it harder because people will obviously choose the Japanese version because it's usually the version they saw first. A "Both" option would be best, but since there isn't one…
I'll gladly admit that I prefer OP in english. Now, I still watch the Original Japanese version. It's just some of the voices sound weird to me.
Also, I agree about Eric Vale's Sanji. He pulls it off.
-
I'd rather watch it in English than in Japanese. I'm just not that into Japanese acting and I find it a bit overrated.
The dub does have its flaws though, but in the end I find it a bit more enjoyable than the original.
-
Subbed, I stopped watching any dubbed version of any anime a long time ago due to edits and story changes.
The sub is as close as you're going to get without learning another language.
Another factor in this is the subbed version is ahead of the dubbed version in episodes. Also, a lot of animes don't have an English version. I watch more then the big popular ones. :/
-
Very hard to choose. I mean, Funi's dub is a very good One Piece dub….but nothing can ever top the original.
I like Funi's dub AND the Japanese.....but the Japanese version a tiny bit more.
-
Both versions sound good to me.
-

Well, see, the thing is…
The people who view it as that don't agree with your claims, Charagon. And I for one consider the majority (not all) of the laughs stupid and annoying. So... I don't miss 'em much (FOS FOS FOS FOS...ugh).
Anyways, as for me. They're the same. I don't put too much thought on it, it's just a cartoon. Watching it in Japanese and English is the same for me. I'm watching One Piece. That's all there is to it.
-

And FUNimation's dub of One Piece changed the story and is edited how…?
-
@Mikey:

Maybe he's mixing it up with 4Kids.
-
I love both. I think they're both great. However, I have to choose, so I think the Japanese track is better.
-
Not really a fan of the dub. I actually liked the 4kids one better, it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen
-
I dunno, I prefer hearing One Piece in my own language. Just sounds more… real to me. The original Japanese version is amazing, but Funimation's is also a great dub. So I would like to have a "both versions" option, but I'll just choose dub.
Also I've gotten used to hearing Vale as Sanji. Much better than hearing Moo D:.
-
What is it that people don't like about Vale's Sanji?
It doesn't sound like the Japanese version, yes, but it doesn't really have to. It just has to fit the character, which it does, in my opinion. Hearing Dub Sanji at Rain Dinners confirmed to me that he was a perfect Sanji. -
^Indeed. I never understood the hate on Vale's Sanji. I personally think he's great. Like when the dub first came out people hating on Sabat playing Zoro because "ZOMG… he sounds like Piccolo"
-
Eric Vale's Sanji is one of my favorite voices actually…
-
Yeah, I'll be honest, Eric Vale's Sanji took some getting used to. But in the end, it's really just a matter of it being different from his Japanese VA. It's not that it's bad, or a wrong fit, it's just that it is not what we're used to hearing.
The only voice I've really ever had a problem with is Luffy's. I know that Colleen is trying her hardest, and she's not bad, it's just I still haven't gotten all of that used to her voice.
I guess I'm just too used to Mayumi Tanaka as Luffy. The same goes for Franky, and probably Brooke when his VA gets announced and heard. The thing with Luffy and Franky (IIRC) is that they were kind of made to fit their respective Japanese VA. I don't remember where I heard that, or if it is actually true… But I did hear it somewhere. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the same were true for Brooke. I LOVE the voice acting for him.
-
As long as Frank sounds like an "American duuuudde", I'm all for it. Not really a fan of Franky's voice. I noticed this when Bon appeared in ID… If those two were to meet, a portal to hell will open.
As for Collen's Luffy, I think it fits. She knows when it be tense and when to be the little kid Luffy is. That is all that is important. The VA in Japanese is great in its own rights though. Can't really top that commanding side.
-

Franky was drawn with Kazuki Yao's voice in mind. Luffy was not drawn with Mayumi Tanaka in mind, he was just drawn.
I know that all English Dub voices have to go past Oda, so I'm pretty sure he thinks they're good.
I'd imagine the Japanese version may got through similar treatment, though.
(Maybe not?) -
There's no romance is Eric Vale's voice. He's good on the comical scenes where Sanji's eyes turn into hearts and he's okay for normal conversational voice.
But those slowly, deep, careful lines that make Sanji cool… Vale just powers through them.
Basically, I do not want to have gay sex with Eric Vale's voice. And that means he isn't doing it right.
-
@Badass:

Are you sure about that? I'm 100% sure that I saw that somewhere. It may have been more his personality than his appearance, though.
-

–- for you. It seems some people here are content with his dub voice, however.
Not sure how you would like to have gay sex with Sanji's Japanese voice though. It's just a voice, bro. >_>
