I have to say, the animation looks really neat/crisp.
Though I have doubts the plot will reach the same standard.
the plot is just fine
the plot is just fine
The plot spoilers on the standard trailer looked basic and overly familiar, Though this isn't much to go on.
Is it a lot more complex, or is the plot itself just a oldskool winner?
yeah it's familar, but that doesn't stop it from being overly entertaining
it's got a 97% on rotten tomatoes, if you need further convincing
I wanna see this sometime soon, some of my friends talked about it seeing it today… but they didnt invite me:cwy:. LOL. I'll see it with my brother, or just not see it. I think the dragons look a little weird though.
I didn't think this looked too awe inspiring, then I realized it's a book series. I didn't see the first book there though, otherwise, I might've grabbed it. But I did go crazy over watching the How to Train Your Dragon stuff on On Demand.
Looks very entertaining at the very least - the twin chick was a riot.
yeah, all the viking kids were great
That was a fun movie, not gonna lie.
But Hiccup needed his sarcasm toned down about ten notches.
I saw it yesterday and I loved it :) The 3D was nothing special, but the movie itself was awesome :D
Too expensive.
I was going to see it during the premier, but then I saw the price.
i think watching it after it is out of the cinemas is just fine with that movie..
horrible, horrible, horrible, piece of shit movie
Why was it horrible?
I think that's the idiot troll contrarian position.
I'm going to see this movie again tomorrow morning. I absolutely loved it! True, it's a simple storyline, but it's a fun ride and I love the characters.
horrible, horrible, horrible, piece of shit movie
at least it's not a huge internet fatty like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was very skeptical of the movie when I first heard about it and started seeing ads, but it sounds like it's getting received very well. Unfortunately I'm not a movie-theatre guy, $10 to see a movie once without the ability to pause and take a piss is too rich for my blood. It also doesn't help that movies have about a 4 month wait period between Theatre debut and video release.
I'll definitely be checking this out once we get a Blu-ray release.
I think that while the plot might not REDEFINE DRAGONS IN MAINSTREAM ANIMATED CINEMA it's apparently a well developed and flashiful story. And that's what I'm going for - I want to hear Scottish (lol) Vikings, I want to hear Gerrard Butler, and I want to see some awesome scaly pets.
I'll definitely be checking this out once we get a Blu-ray release.
Defeats the point IMO. The critics are saying "see this in 3D" and I definitely want to see it like that, but what costs you $10 for a non-3D ticket (?) costs $15 for me over a normal $7 general admission ticket. Split amongst three people…that's $21 bucks more. Enough to go eat dinner!
Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson INTENTIONALLY being stereotypical Irishmen? SOLD!
Question! How do the manage to show….
MASSIVE MOVIE SPOILER
! Hiccup losing his leg?
Might see it, however, I have pretty much hated every Dreamworks movie I have ever seen (including ones people here love such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs).

3D isn't an option for me due to my eyesight. If 3D is that big a part of the film being good, then it's NOT a good film. If a film depends on a gimmick, then there's a problem.

That wasn't a Dreamworks film, but was made by Sony.
Anyway, How to Train Your Dragon is not a groundbreaking film in terms of plot, but it's a very solid one with very nice animation particularly towards the end of the film. It's well worth seeing especially while it's still out in theaters.
wow was just checking rotton tomatoes and this movie has a 97 right now.

Scottish Vikings =/= Irish.
@JERK:
Scottish Vikings =/= Irish.
I don't give a fuck.
Do not go in any bars past the Rhode Island border with that attitude. This is for your own good.

True. That's like stepping into APForums with the Jerk Disease.
Wait a minute…
Well, I cleared out my deadline, hopefully I'll be able to see this THIS weekend. I hope. Chris Sanders is my boy. After Mulan and Lilo & Stitch, he gets the benefit of the doubt and a theatrical viewing for at least a couple more movies. Him and Brad Bird.

Wait. Weren't you giving me a hassle for not geting around to seeing Princess and the Frog in theatres (for a while), because I don't think the price is worth the one time viewing generally, especially if you take friends along?
Dreamworks needs to keep up with this. Easily one of my favorite 3d films I've watched in a while.

Yeah I was, but PatF's ticket price was at least less than the price of the DVD. The DVD price is my max willingness to pay, since I only see movies once anyway anything at that price or below I'll go see.
how much is the matinee where you guys live
I've always liked dragons, so this movie peaked my interest. With all the good stuff being said about it, my interest is peaked even more.

Alright, cool. Might see it, but looking at wiki's list once Shrek started I have never liked any dreamworks movie (liked the stuff before…hmm....wonder why) [didn't catch Kung-fu Panda though].
I guess it does get some credit in that it is based off a book (which means that it has a higher chance of being better than something they produced in house to me).
It's not your typical Dreamworks film by any means. Sadly, barring a sharp uptick in its second weekend or a minimal dropoff, it looks like it's going to be judged a financial failure since it made less money in its opening weekend than Monsters vs. Aliens, which was considered a bit of a disappointment itself. Apparently, it only made about three quarters of what they were projecting it to make.
Which just goes to show (with the exception of Pixar films), the better a movie is, the less money it's going to make while the reverse is also true. The next Shrek movie will probably make half a billion dollars or so.
I Love this film!
I agree, it's not a typical Dreamworks film. My main issue with most of their other ones is that they used too many pop culture references and gags but this one had a different feel. A better one.
Go check it out. Gorgeous animation, design and music and it really was a fun ride! I'm hoping watch it in theaters again, in 2D this time.
@Ubiq- That's really sad to hear. A quote from my friend comes to mind, "the general public loves crap"…
Which just goes to show (with the exception of Pixar films), the better a movie is, the less money it's going to make while the reverse is also true.
i think it's more of a marketing problem. it's not like the film had fuzzy little critters singing well known songs in squeeky high pitched voices
although, dreamworks also has the unfortunate reputation of creating crap movies, so the other side of the spectrum, the animation fans and the more mature audiences, are more likely to write off any movie they come up with
Ho boy. I was expecting a good film.
Instead, I got a heapin' helping of OH MY GOD THEY DID EVERYTHING RIGHT!!!
! In the first half hour of the movie, they manage to introduce all the dragons, their relationship with the vikings, and how to deal with them. Then we get a subplot where Hiccup learns more about the dragon world, and the two learn to work together. These were my favorite parts because:
1. I love it when a silent character works out, and Toothless counts.
2. The movie totally depended on Hiccup and Toothless needing each other. Hiccup needs to learn about dragons, and Toothless needs to fly. The epitome of their relationship is established when it's shown that they need each other to fly. If only one of these two was totally dependent on the other, I'm willing to bet that the movie would've fallen apart (or come close).
The only complaints I have are:
1. The climatic battle against the mega dragon. It was good, it just didn't have everything I wanted (I really wanted to see the two headed dragon at work).
2. The part where everyone thinks Hiccup died. Goddammit, if I want crap like that, I'll watch Pokemon/Care Bears/what the hell ever sappy movie has done this before.
On a final note, I loved that the low point of the movie wasn't about Hiccup being an idiot, but rather his dad being an idiot and him having to face the consequences.
4.9 stars out of 5 for me.
Yes! I love the storytelling. It was smart, it made sense, there wasn't random useless filler.

! I agree, I expected some more "smart dragon tricks" and less "pure firepower beatdown" for the final battle. I actually almost expected them to dump a barrel of eel at the giant dragon.. though that might just be wishful thinking cuz I want to see that happen haha. And I agree, Hiccup was a great main character for being not-an-idiot. I love it when main characters don't do or say things that make me cringe.
That eel thing would've been so awesome.
Like watching an evil elephant run after having a barrel full of mouses dumped on it.

I don't agree with Ubiq's logic, and I don't agree with this, but I do agree on the marketing thing. People aren't attracted to bad movies because they think they're bad, or because they think they're "so bad, they're good" - they actually think those movies are good because they're not sensitive to higher forms of entertainment. Dreamworks bad rep also didn't stop people from seeing its bad movies, and especially not people from seeing its good ones like KFP.
There's really only so much Dreamworks can do to promote this film beyond the picture's natural magnetism. The article I read that originally interested me in this film all but cautioned that it'll probably be under-noticed because dragons are badly stereotyped as generic fantasy fanfare in mainstream cinema, all because of poor depictions in prior films.
These days, with the novelty of 3D animation having worn off films run the risk of appearing generic, and generic is bad when it comes to trying to market to an audience that responds strongly to franchise or celebrity recognition but not much else.
After reading many good things about this movie from this thread, I decided to give it a shot. It was surprisingly enjoyable. I liked most of it with only a few things I wanted to see but didn't.
! More types of Dragon since they mentioned a dozen or so, Better end fight where the dragons/Hiccup used more tactics(not that it didn't have any but I was really thinking the two headed dragon was going to at least use it's gas breath or the eels would be used),more info on little things Still, I had a good time. Thanks for the recommendation.

oh yeah, definitely
when he was going through that hand book and got to the creepier species, i was just praying we'd get to see some of them

What I meant by that, was that a lot of people that I know, online especially, have been to see Madagascar or Monsters Vs Aliens, and were disappointed because they were not fans of that particular brand of "humor", and have since decided not to waste their money on seeing a Dreamworks film in theaters. Frankly, I felt the same way about Kung Fu Panda based on how it was marketed: obnoxious celebrity voice, slow motion, EVERYBODEH WAS KUNG FU FAIGHTIIIING, etc
I understand some of the things they left out since it is a movie focused on kids and you can't make those too long, if it was a movie made focusing on older audiences I would be a bit more upset about the things you mentioned.
One thing I was a bit eh on though.
! When Astrid found him while he was trying to run away, he had no reason to go after her, he was running away, by the time she got back to the village and they had rounded up the warriors and came back he would of been long gone, and him talking to her is what made him want to stay, so I wish it just would of given him more of a reason to chase her instead of just leaving like he planned.
It makes me glad that they would try to deliberately steer away from marketing solely on celebrity voice talent. Not that it's a bad thing to have, Pixar does it too, but never do I go into any Pixar movie for the actors behind the characters, they're just "there" and usually well chosen for their role rather than built entirely around it.
Hey, I was at work, and I noticed the two-headed dragon was called a Zippleback (couldn't remember it before).
Considering that that dragon uses gas and sparks to ignite things, do you think it was called Zippleback because 'Zippoback' would've been copyright infringement?

Here's a quote from pg 44 of the artbook (happened to just read it a couple minutes ago!):
"This dragon [the Hideous Zippleback] does not breathe fire, technically. Instead, one head emits a flammable gas while the other strikes a spark to ignite it into a flame. Perhaps a more appropriate name would have been the Zippo-back?"
And @Sesshy:
! Perhaps it was because Hiccup planned to leave in secrecy. Without Astrid reporting him, he would have simply been written off as "disappeared for unknown reasons". That doesn't sound nearly as treacherous as "eloping with dragon friend", which might have provoked some hostile reactions.
! And as for why he abandoned the decision to run away after being caught by Astrid– Even she, the most determined of his peers, was able to accept and even admire a dragon. As a result Hiccup might have realized that there were more possibilities than simply running away, and so decided to stay "one more day" and weigh his options.
! Just my 2 cents!
I'll admit it… reading the title and seeing it was from Dreamworks (plus the trailers don't show much of the good stuff) I walked in thinking it was going to be crap.
I'm glad I was wrong.
This was the first time I've seen a Dreamworks picture "for kids" that didn't insult the parents intelligence with fart jokes and pop culture references galore.
[hide]The story well paced, the Toothless/Hiccup scenes were amazing and the ending along with the repercussions of the battle (zomg Hiccup ACTUALLY lost his fucking leg?!) were all top notch. The 3-D was decent… nothing to write home about imo. [/hide]
