FUNi didn't translate the game. Bandai did.
Plus that was before the big bad new list.
While I hate art-edits, unlike Roguetown and Zolo, Sniperking has perfect reason.
Sniperking has grown on me, it makes sense that an English Ussop would have called himself sniperking instead of sogeking, as long as viz does a good job with the wanted poster I'm happy
Why wouldn't English Usopp come up with a similarly clever English only pun?
I still don't see what is wrong with a tiny asterisk with a small translators note explaining the original pun. Then Viz wouldn't have to edit the artwork, and change a character's name, because it is a CHANGE not a TRANSLATION. Seems to me that the footnote would be less work and more accurate.
This isn't a case of translation for the reasons I've stated multiple times in this thread, and if it were, I'd still be against it because VIZ would be translating a character's name. It would be like translating Yamucha's name in Dragonball. It's just not done.

That's exactly what they should do. The Japanese version is full of English terms, so why no Japanese terms in the English version?
We don't go around changing Kuririn's name to Chestnuttin or something, so I see no reason to change Sogeking.
Ugh, anime/manga fans.
They changed it because "Soge" would make no sense.
"Krillin" is just a name. Nothing more. "Sogeking", while being a name, is also a title.
Sure, they can add a footnote… but it'd just be more straghtforward and to-the-point if they make it "Sniper-King".
Believe me, nobody important will care. I'm sure Viz know this. There will always be butt-hurt fans. They bitch. That's what they do. And it's impossible to stop them. They'll find a way to bitch...
So, just ignore the shit outta them and move on.
They changed it because "Soge" would make no sense.
How does Usopp's name make any more sense?
"Krillin" is just a name. Nothing more. "Sogeking", while being a name, is also a title.
That's where I disagree with you. Sogeking is supposed to be a different person. Sogeking is his name, not his title. That's like saying Spiderman isn't his name it's his title.
Why not translate the pun in Usopp or Sanji's name? Their names are just as much nonsense as Sogeking would be to an English speaker.
Whats the pun in Sanji's name? I know the Usopp one, but I never knew Sanji had one too.
Oh, and wouldn't Liesop suck?

I buy VIZ´s One Piece volumes, so I have all the right to criticize what I (will) read. The only one who´s turning everything into a BAWfest is you, who whines and whines about everyone in this topic who doesn't agree with you and Viz.
And "Krillin" is not his real name. Kuririn is his name and the word Kuri means chestnut, which is what his head is shaped like in his first appearance. Not changing the name makes it completely unrelatable to English people, as you say so yourself.
BUT OH WAIT!
Footnotes exist to explain everything!
Also what mrkaizoku said.
Kuririn is harder to say then Krillin, imo.
I don't think his head is shaped like a chestnut o.o. The fat guy from Eyeshield 21 has a chestnut head, but I never thought Krillins head looked like a chestnut O.O
How does Usopp's name make any more sense?
Why not translate the pun in Usopp or Sanji's name? Their names are just as much nonsense as Sogeking would be to an English speaker.
Maybe it's because half of Sogeking's name is already in English?
Well, I don't know what the Japanese pun is, but Usopp could be related to Aesop to an English reader….you know, the liar related to Aesop's fables?
I honestly really don't care about the puns in Usopp's and Sanji's names though.
Nami is just wave in Japanese right?
Sogeking is actually a pun that requires a bit of attention unlike Sanji and Usopp's names.
The thing is, Usopp is calling himself, Sniperking, King of Snipers...the joke is lost if they leave soge...at least to all non-hardcore internetz community One piece fans. Since it sounds good both ways and means the same thing, I see no problem trasnlating it. Translating Nami to Wave would sound stupid.
Sogeking isn't much of a pun...
Soge=Sniper + King....Sniperking...the joke isn't the pun, it's the "King of Snipers, Sniper king" part I think...which is lost in translation with Sogeking.
Personally I don't care about this one....pick and choose the things you'll fan rage over XD....if you get angry over every minute change, there's no way you'll enjoy the volumes. That anger isn't going to get you a new translation either, so might as well be happy with what you've got or start learning Japanese.
I think Sogeking is fine because I know what it means....but there are a lot of people who don't, so I could see this change.
The only thing I've never gotten over is Zoro - Zolo...everything else is minor in comparison...and I know this isn't viz's fault.
As long as they dont' start editing artwork (I don't consider changing the letters on the bounty posters a real "artwork" edit as much as the other things they've done in Naruto or Dragon Ball for example), I'll be happy with these volumes.
Anyone else notice Viz is relaxing the language thing a little bit at a time? I saw them use "damn" in this month's chapter of Tegami bachi..."bastard" a few months ago in YuYu Hakusho..."hell" regularly in One Piece. And we know they're using Kamabakka, so I guess they'll be using Newkama....they use the term Okama in Gintama....I don't see why they edit it in One Piece lol
Usopp's name is a pun, because uso means lie. And yes, Nami's name means wave.
Soge=Sniper + King….Sniperking...the joke isn't the pun, it's the "King of Snipers, Sniper king" part I think...which is lost in translation with Sogeking.
Oh, it's a pun.
Sogeki = sniper
Get it?
Just to explain real quick before going through some wrong posts, I'm all right with Sniperking because I understand the reasoning for the translation in English.
@mrkaizoku:
Why wouldn't English Usopp come up with a similarly clever English only pun?
Because there is no way to translate this pun into English. It only works in Japanese.
@mrkaizoku:
This isn't a case of translation
Yes, it is.
@mrkaizoku:
It would be like translating Yamucha's name in Dragonball. It's just not done.
Yamucha doesn't have a translation, and FUNi's use of Yamcha is called TRANSLITERATION.
@Kaiolino:
Footnotes exist to explain everything!
Except, they rarely do that. Unless you mean they should do it like Del Ray who has a lot of endnotes in their volumes. There's pros and cons to both.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Well, I don't know what the Japanese pun is, but Usopp could be related to (and here is where I cut out all the stuff that was wrong) Aesop's fables?
Aesop
Uso = Lie
Usopp
Aesop was the name of the storyteller (like Usopp is), not a liar (which is what Usopp is).
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
I honestly really don't care about the puns in Usopp's and Sanji's names though.
Sanji both means three o'clock, and a horrible occurance that you can't really look at and/or look away from.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Nami is just wave in Japanese right?
Yup.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Soge=Sniper + King….Sniperking...the joke isn't the pun, it's the "King of Snipers, Sniper king" part I think...which is lost in translation with Sogeking.
Wrong.
sogeki = sniper
If it were a case of translation dirt monkey AL his name would be Sniperng. Sogeki is a word and King is also a word. Smashed together they make Sogeking it is no longer either word, but a new word. Hence why "Sniperking" wouldn't be a translation, but would be a change.
Sanji literally means three o' clock, but can also mean three o' clock snack time.
Yamucha certainly has a translation. Yamucha is tea. As is Oolong.

No, because it's a pun.
A Japanese pun that can't translate into English.
So instead of transliterating and using Sogeking and then using some lengthy endnote or possibly unclear footnote, they translated in a way to oust the pun, so they wouldn't have to explain it.
How can the footnote be unclear?
Note: Sogeking is a pun on the Japanese "Sogeki" (sniper) and the English "king".
If Viz can go out of its way to list made up BS notes under the panels (Oh come my way), then they can certainly do a one line explanation of Sogeking's origins.
German mangas have this, French mangas have this, Dutch mangas have this and some English ones too (but as I understand the English ones aren't done as well). If it was a real nifty pun or one that can't be explained so easily like Newkama, then I'd see where you guys are coming from, but as it is, it's a very simple thing to explain.

Newkama is about as easy to explain as Sogeking actually.
Newkama
Newcomer
kama = gay/transvestite or comer
IF they explain it clearly.
But VIZ rarely does footnotes unless it's for kanji in the artwork. Besides, the last time I saw a VIZ footnote that long, it was about the manji that a fishman was sporting. And it was still even longer than that.
I finally got my new SJ today. 525-528 ending with Jimbei talking to Ace in their cell was a good read plus the brief description of the Islands where the others Strawhats have landed (Nami: Weatheria, Chopper: Birdie Kingdom, Sanji: Peachy Island, Usopp: Bowin Islands, Brook: Lazy Bones Island, Franky: Mechanical Island, Zoro: Gloom Island, Robin: Tequila Wolf) and the brief recap of Amazon Lily. I still have to get around to buying volumes 22 and 23 of OP before the speedup begins.
I never thought I'd see somebody let something as trivial as sogeking changing to sniperking get them this upset, I mean come on sure we lose a little pun, but it still means the same thing. I also wish they would stick with sogeking, but I'm nit getting all upset if they don't
Man, just back up and listen to yourself
Who was upset? Other than Smore.
@dirt:

Last footnote I remember was in Volume 22 when they explained Nami's money hand symbol.

someone doesn't understand English phrasings
but lemme give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume that common English confused you
rewritten in proper English:

I understand english just fine. I just read your last post, where that part about the fishman wasn't there.
I have been trying to attach a scan of that page but it will not let me .

Oh, you're only talking about LONG Viz footnotes.

reading comprehension is THROUGH THE ROOF
Sniperking:
Sigh, what the fuck ever Viz, whatever. I no longer give that much of a crap. But just to let you know, Sogeking is what Funi is going with, along with the rest of the world.
Strawhat separation Islands:
How accurate are these? The got Hungeria for the land Brook is in (I don't know about the island though) and Tequila Wolf, but the others?
Weatheria is correct - unless it was written as Weatharia somewhere in the panels since I don't feel like checking.
@dirt:
Weatheria is correct - unless it was written as Weatharia somewhere in the panels since I don't feel like checking.
Right, right. Ussop's and Chopper's are fine, too. Franky's is correct. But how about Zoro, Sanji, and Brook? (where's Rin and her translating when you need it?)
I could translate it, but I don't know what the names of the islands are in Japanese off-hand.
@dirt:
I could translate it, but I don't know what the names of the islands are in Japanese off-hand.
Zoro: Kuraigana Island
Sanji: Momoiro Island (Peach colored? Right? So Peachy is cool, if I'm right.)
Brook: Kamakura Island
Go for it.

Peachy is fine.
Kamakura seems to be a nod to the Kamakura period of Japan when Mongol invasions drained the economy and taxes were raised. I don't see any connection to their translation unless some of the name of the island was in kanji. EDIT: WAAIIITT … unless you meant Kamakkura?
Gloom is also fine.
Brook is actually on Namakura Island.
Brook is actually on Namakura Island.
Namakura means blunt or dull … but again there might be something about the name in kana or kanji that I can't see in romaji.
EDIT: And nope, it's all in katakana. So either I'm missing something else or VIZ is wrong.
My Volume 23 has been on "Reserved" status for at least a week and a half now over at Rightstuf. So had I not ordered it along with the Speed Up volumes, it probably would've been in my possession around last tuesday, maybe wednesday.
I think we're allowed to ask things be sent as they get them. I should probably go do that now since I'd rather have several small charges and not one big one.
Brook is actually on Namakura Island.
D'oh! On a related note, I certainly hope they don't try to write around the Satan/Devil Worshipers bit, for their sake as well as ours. (And by "for their sake," I mean it'll be hard to do.)
they can't edit out the blatant black merry goats anyway
@dirt:
they can't edit out the blatant black merry goats anyway
Exactly. The best they'll honestly be able to do it use Dark Lord every time, but since the readers will get it anyway…
If Lazy is correct somehow, then it's possible they just threw bones in there simply because it's Brook.
Exactly. The best they'll honestly be able to do it use Dark Lord every time, but since the readers will get it anyway…
Well, they could just use Demon King like the episode title did (悪魔王). Or, since Hell the place is apparently no longer taboo, using the Devil would be a possibility too.
Did anyone receive their Volume 23 yet?
Yeah, the more I look into the word, namakura, the more I think they might have just stretched it to make it Lazy Bones.
Namakura probably just relates to the fact that the inhabitants are a little dumb/gullible.
@Dixxy:

Well I did ask them to send what they had in stock around the middle of October when they finally got my Volume 22 in. However they said I could either pay $3 dollars for them to ship it now or I could wait since they claimed they shipped items out every couple of weeks. I figured I'd wait and if I was lucky enough, Volume 23 would come in right before the next time anything got shipped out. It's been a month now and nothings shipped. D:< So I've just got two volumes, an Eureka Seven dvd set, a OP necklace and a OP and E7 key-chains just sitting around waiting. I think since Volume 23 came in about two weeks early, the same will happen with the speed up volumes. So if nothing ships out by the time January's volumes get reserved, I'll just pay to have everything shipped then. That way it's one less time I have to ask my mother to put up with my, as she calls it, "weird sh*t". (I'm only 17 therefore I don't have my own credit card yet) And to get January speed up volumes two weeks early would make one hell of a Christmas present. :D
Oh man that blows. So they will be shipping it to you in January?
Naw I did a MASS pre-order. As in, every volume they had available for purchase from 22 up. Had I waited till everything came in, I would be waiting till May (or maybe the second or third week of April). I don't mind waiting a little bit longer when it's still at a speed of just one volume every three months but not participating in ANY of the speed up until April would kill me. That's when it blows my friend.
what i'm mad at isn't the whole sogeking sniper king debat it's the whole sky peia arc
god being called kami which may be the same thing but it means nothing here
preists being called vassals and shandora being called EL Dorado WTF IS UP WITH THAT SHIT
I'm pretty sure I remember Robin using El Dorado in the Japanese version to refer to the general legend of a city being full of gold.
Or maybe not. It's been a while since I've read that part of the story.
