So, I just got Season 2 First and Second Voyage, (25 episodes which I haven't seen in ages, yay!) and I just watched the first couple of episodes on it… You know, for all the hate that the Warship Island-arc gets around here, I really don't think it's all that bad. True, the characters do seem somewhat flanderized, but I still enjoyed it. Besides, it had Luffy throwing himself hundreds of metres into the air only to rip an entire ship in two using a Gum-Gum Battle-Axe. You gotta admit that was pretty cool.
Also I noticed that FUNi calls the dragon "Grampa Ryu", which I find a bit odd, as I always thought his name was just "Ryuji", not "Ryu-jii"… Well, whatever.

My best friend is currently at the War Ship island arc and he said it was his favorite (as in more than the Arlong Arc, Baratie arc etc.) because it's so sweet. I was like WTF:blink:

Lol, I'm sure he will change his mind once he sees the other great stories to come later on.

Problem is he's too lazy to watch any more so far. It's bad enough that he ranks it above Arlong and Baratie!!! Not to say he didn't love them too.

@Thousand:
Hey, I wouldn't go that far…
Yeah, sorry.
I don't even know your friend, maybe he's a great guy.

But probably not .

Well we all have our opinions I guess. It's different for us, having read the manga and knowing what is and isn't filler.
I actually didn't read the manga until Water 7ish, I started with the anime around that time. While I didn't mind some filler, tbh I thought the Apis arc and other filler arcs like goat man and rainbow mist were kind of boring and prolonged. I appreciate them more now that I know what happens after, but I guess I had a "filler-detector" or something.
Oh man, remember back when we watched and/or read One Piece for the first time? There will never be such a good feeling again.
Your friend sucks.
Hey now, let's not make it personal.

Wait, Thousand Lion likes the FUNi dub?! o_0
Surprises come every day I guess

Was he a non-supporter before or something?

He's just misunderstood for legit reasons.

Nah, I drove it into his skull plenty of times of what filler is and that it is one. He said he didn't care and found it sweet and that he's a bigger OP fan than me because he likes things I don't (which is lulzy as he's only on episode 60 whereas I'm up-to-date in the anime and manga and all the OP news).

Huh? Dunno where you got that from my post but yeah. Not as much as the original but it's pretty damn good.

I REALLY don't want to start a debate, so please don't start it but considering how upset you get whenever "Second Gear" gets brought up, I would have thought a Dub that made "Shark On Darts" into "Shark Darts" would be just as bad to you.

Don't care about Shark on Darts, I care about Gear Second and believe me if the dub ever did Second Gear…
-
It'd be perfectly fine? Cause its not like they're changing the name at all, just rearranging it to fit in English.
-
"Second Gear" is the correct English translation of "Gear Second." So while is may not be what we are used to, it's the path that Funi should go down.

"Gear Second" was done in English initially. No translation should be necessary for something that's already in English.

D. Monkey Luffy.

Yes, translating English to English.

It was done using the English words, true, but the order of words is off.
-

No it isn't. There's no off. It's a name not a sentence. Like Super Saiyan 3.
Ugh, see what you did Rin? The debate's already starting.
-

Think of it this way. "Gear: Second"

Debate? In your mind maybe. Anyway, to an English speaking audience "Second Gear" sounds better.
-
@Thousand:
D. Monkey Luffy.
I thought it was Luffy D. Monkey….
Either way it's on the Wanted poster so...
-

What sounds better is not only subjective but it's irrelevant. What matters is what the author intended it as. He wrote Gear Second practically in plain English.

Either way it's on the Wanted poster so...
Exactly, that's how the author intended it.
-
Are we seriously going to get into this again?
-
I don't even understand this. What's the big deal?
-
I didn't start it.
-
Let's not….last time was really annoying...
-
@Thousand:
I didn't start it.
I am aware of that, but let's not let this spin out of control again please.

I'll drop it if everyone else will.

Lol, this guy seems a bit full of himself, tbh. He hasn't even seen Alabasta, Skypiea, Water 7/Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark or Shabaody yet, so he's got a long way before he can call himself "a better One Piece fan"
Anyhow, I'm not a huge fan of "Second Gear" but it IS the correct English translation and we will get used to it. It's certainly not a reason to stop buying the DVDs.

Hi, thousand lion - chan…. about ur friend thinking that the apis part of one piece was sweet.. i have to totally agree so all of you give this poor new user a break. It was really an emotional story.
Hope all of you have a great week!! -
I'm just gonna say my peace one last time.
"Second Gear" is NOT A "Change". It fixes the grammar of an attack that is perceived as being off in grammar. True, if you take it as 'Gear: Second' Then it's not, but Oda never put that " : " in there, so to the average person, it would seem off. While I don't necessarily LIKE it, Taking The EXACT SAME Two words and rearranging them is NOT a "change." A "Change" would be if they called it "Gum Gum Pump me Up" or something.
That's it, there's nothing else to say. It's not a change if you use the exact same two words, but FORGETTING THAT, we've already gotten Unlimited Adventure where dub Luffy said "Gear: Second", so I doubt this is even going to be an issue. I just assumed that since things like that pissed Thousand Lion off, he wouldn't put up with similar grammar fixes like taking the "On" out of "Shark On Darts". Seriously, I know Oda named the attack "Shark On Darts", and I get why "Shark" and "Darts" is there. But The "On" makes no sense…
-
I don't know if this has been asked before, but since Funi already dubbed the series from Jaya to Upper Yard, are they just going to use those recording or are they going to go back and tweak some things. Personally, I didn't like their Robin too much; I missed her calling everyone by their profession on the ship and she seemed too rude.
-
There was word rewrites might be done.
Personally I feel bad for Stephanie Young. She's so naturally sexy sounding she has to try not to sound it…

"Gear Second" is an attack name, so logical English sentence structure means nothing. "Gear Second" sounds cooler to me anyway ("Second Gear" reminds me to much of automotive gears). And besides any of that, "Second Gear" wouldn't fit the mouth flaps. Unless of course they said it in a retarded way: "Sec… OndGear!"
My piece of One Piece is now over. And, Thousand Lion-chan, I'm the Biggest One Piece Fan. (cool look of unending greatness)
-
I'm sure Funi is leaving it as Gear 2nd, just like they did in Unlimited Adventure
If they changed it I'd be upset for a few reasons
-

Probably they will. I don't see why not. Although her calling them by their names wasn't bad:
"Luffy! Stretch as far as you can!"
"Nami, you have serious mood swings."But I really want them to change nonetheless. If they can, great. If not, oh well.
-

Yeah, forgetting everything else: Lipflap would probably force them to use Gear Second.
Done deal, no sense discussing it any further. -
Gia Sekando is four syllables, Gear Second is three, so don't be surprised if a 'go' gets thrown in there or something.
-
Just saw the cover for S2 V4
Now im 6 boxes behind on buying these
-
@Yuugi's:

Meh, they handle gomu gomu no gattlingu well enough.
-
1. 'Gear Second' is a name. It doesn't have to follow the rules of English grammar. Christ, 'Brain Point' doesn't even make any goddamn sense, but that's what they had better !@#$ing use.
2. To translate is to turn from one language into another or from a foreign language into one's own. You cannot translate English into English. One would think that this would be obvious, but apparently it's not.
3. Lip flaps don't really matter. In fact, it's kind of weird how anal U.S. dub companies get about them. They will put far more effort into lip-syncing a dub than the original production company does when making the show in the first place.
-
Seriously, I know Oda named the attack "Shark On Darts", and I get why "Shark" and "Darts" is there. But The "On" makes no sense…
Fishman brains have a tendency to read certain things backwards and translating their particular grammar is always a challenge because fishmen never waste anything, so what normally would have read 'Darts no Shark' came out 'Shark on Darts' instead of simply 'Shark Darts'.
It's a fishman thing.
-

Sure you can. You can 'translate' American English to English to Australian English to Pirate if you want.
And about Gear Second-
No! Stop it! We're not getting into this again.
I said no!
-
The fact that you put the word in quotes is pretty telling…
-
Who knows, we might still wind up with Gear Second in the end and subtitles fixed accordingly. As I understand it, these subtitles are merely for Toei's use.
-

Given what happens with her and her story, her calling people by their position or characteristics was a great touch. It keep her distance, apart from the other Strawhats. And it wouldn't be hard for them to redub it either. And make her nicer and less sarcastic.
-
Sense this is somehow news related Quexinos has canceled his site he lost interest of it, I am kinda sad though sense it was a great place to get that latest news on things.
