Now the reason I ask this is because this ISN'T an easy question to answer. We all love the Straw Hats, and because of this I think it'll be a good challenge for us to figure out and decide.
So, who's the most useless Straw Hat?

Brooke is hilarious, and REALLY great, but what more can a musician do than entertain? My 2nd opt out would be Robin though, because even with smarts, they did pretty well without her as well.

Never underestimate the ability to entertain or moral.
In anything other than fighting, Zoro.
In anything other than fighting, Zoro.
If it wasn't for Zoro the whole crew would probably be dead by now. (Kuma)
There is no useless person inside the strawhat crew..Everyone have their specialities and use in different way ^^

Situational moments of series shouldn't count in a discussion like this. most every straw hat at some point in the story has been a lynchpin for the survival and well being of the rest of the crew.
I'd like to think this topic would be more along the lines of, who's generally the most useless of the crew in terms of skills.
Let's take a look at the most useful members:
Franky: hands down he's useful as hell. He's a good fighter, maintains the ship, hooks the crew up with his machines and inventions on a regular basis.
Nami: Near savant-like understanding of weather and navigation (last I checked, this is pretty important to pirates). Surveyor. Good with finances. High IQ.
Sanji and Chopper: Both can fight very well, especially Sanji. Chopper has great doctoral skills and Sanji is a master chef. Nuff said.
Robin: very high intelligence, good combat skills, a wide variety of world knowledge and history. Ability to read poneglyphs
Alright… these members are out of my running.
SO that leaves Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Brooke.
Who's the most useless?

I'd take Luffy out too, seeing as how he's the one keeping them all together.
robin, a thousand times robin. there is no real reason nami couldn't play her role in the story besides the series telling you so.
I'd take Luffy out too, seeing as how he's the one keeping them all together.
Well, if we put it that way, I'd have to go with Brook, unfortunately. Zoro, as we've seen, is the unofficial Number Two on board and keeps the crew together under emotional duress that Luffy can't handle or brush off. Usopp, while not at Franky's level, is still a craftsman, and there are plenty of things he could put those skills to work with around maintaining the ship. Brook's role aboard is a complete luxury, and if we bring fighting records into this, he's been rather underwhelming, since he's gone down against pretty much every named opponent after Taleran, if he counted.
^I think you've got my vote.
I never thought of it that way. But Luxury is a good way to put it. And even though Zoro and Luffy's primary skills are fighting… the sheer degree of their prowess deserves merit. Usopp definitely has a large degree of talents and even if his carpentry and inventing is overshadowed by Franky, his adaptable set of skills are probably useful to the crew on a daily basis.
Brooke it is
But you've got to keep moral up somehow or else you'll end up with a repeat of Water 7.
the events that lead to water 7 were more than just crew moral. It was a set of more specific circumstances.
Besides. Crew moral is easily kept up by Luffy, Ussop, Sanji, and Chopper.
Hell, if every day I was treated to first class food, i'd be a pretty happy camper
If it was everyday, eventually it would become commonplace and not as exciting as it once was, no matter how good it is.
well if you want to look at it like that, then I'm sure a high caliber chef would take a menu into consideration. And Sanji definatly takes pride in the satisfaction of the people he cooks for. It's not like he makes the same meal every day.
sooo….
who do you think is most useless?
He still has to work with the materials he has, and since he hasn't found All Blue yet and Luffy tends to just eat whenever, I'm sure there have been boughts of them eating the same thing for a while.
As for who I think is the most useless…well, probably Robin. She smart, but in an actual pinch Nami and Sanji have shown more smarts than her. Reading the Poneglyphs is cool too, but she's the only one on the ship that actually wants to know what they say.
hmmm in terms of dreams and such. Franky gets the vote hands down. If he's built such an amazing ship out of wood that is almost indestructable. There is REALLY no reason for him to be there at all except he wants to be there.
After that. Zoro. Brook's a musician AND a Swordsman. Zoro has no other purpose really apart from being the token bishie strong guy.
This discussion on Brooke makes me remember that episode where Brooke was trying to be a help to the crew by going around to everyone and trying to help them with whatever they were doing, and actually just made things worse. It was a funny episode. I guess you can call it their way of saying "We know Brooke doesn't seem like much, so now sympathize over him in this episode and MAKE him something!". But yeah. My choice remains on Brooke.
Luffy - Powerhouse and helps them get through tough times.
Zoro - Secondary powerhouse who can be awesome backup or replacement for Luffy.
Nami - Without her, they would of been way lost by now.
Usopp - He invents materials, weapons, and gadgets, as well as minor carpentry skills for the ship. Its useful enough if you ask me.
Sanji - Chef? They'll starve! And if you ask me, hes a pretty good example of a 3rd powerhouse.
Chopper - No questions here. You need a doctor.
Robin - Intelligence and getting through conclusions with the crew. "Handy" skills as well.
Franky - Upgrading shipwright! He'll do anything to make something great around the ship.
Brooke - Musician..who can use his sword sometimes. Yeahhhh..hes cool and all, funny, but it just doesn't seem like a necessarily add. They could of made him so much more, like maybe a bigger variety of skills.
I don't think any of them are 'useless'.
^of course. That's why I tried to keep my thoughts on it to be objective and purely based on character's set's of skills.
Because if you base this topic on events that happen in the story, then yes, NO single strawhat is the most useless.
I think the title "Least Useful Straw Hat" would have been more appropriate.
But I have to sadly agree on Brooke. Still love his character though.
Yeah, "least useful" would also be a good title. But as some of you have picked up on, we all know that EVERY Straw Hat member has been useful in some part of the story. This topic is about generally.
brook is the most useless
Brooke is hilarious, and REALLY great, but what more can a musician do than entertain? My 2nd opt out would be Robin though, because even with smarts, they did pretty well without her as well.
Robin will have a role when the story will talk about the rio poneglyphe and the lost century
It's hard not to say Brook when you think how much time they cruised and survived without him.
Odds are he'll prove his value eventually, but for now..
Franky, why the hell is he there when the ship's indestructable? -_-
^poor logic. Despite the strength of Adam Wood, any ship requires maintenance and care.
plus Franky is like constantly making modifications to it
Robin, they've done fine without her, they probably could if she wasnt there.
I hope she actually becomes more useful than just giving the crew occasional insight on whats going on in the world.
Zoro, other than fighting hes pretty useless.
Ussop other than the climatact and occasional inventions, pretty useless.
Brooke, other than entertainment and good comedy, hes pretty useless.
though brook does seem to be the most useless strawhat at the moment, i feel that we still haven't seen enough of him to make a final judgement yet. And we know that oda wouldnt let brook remain useless for long. i believe he will find his place and do something really awesome soon. i just dont know what
There's a purpose for all of them really, everyone has been of great use, or someone who was putting the lives of the rest of the crew in jeopardy (well, almost all of them).
Of course hands down to the biggest example of the latter statement and so far not being the GREATEST of use to the crew is Robin. She does have a lot of potential but so far she's done little with it.
But I think her time to really shine will come eventually. Especially if the adventure leads them to another poneglyph and discovering more about the lost century.
Robin, Brook, and even Franky so far, to me, have been made to look not as important as the rest of the strawhats =/ Of course Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Usopp, and Chopper will always be the signature faces of the strawhats, but it almost makes the presence of the others feel like extra baggage or not as important.

Probably due to the fact that Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper had arcs dedicated to their joining of the crew while Robin, Franky, and Brook had thier joining lumped together with other happenings.
The only useful ones are Sanji, Chopper, Nami and Franky.

You could consider the enies lobby arc dedicated to Robin, and Franky I guess.
Brooke is the only one that didnt really have a arc just for their joining.
How could anyone think Robin is even slightly useless. Not saying any of you have, and i'm thinking way ahead here, but isn't it obvious Robin will be key in getting to Raftel?
I hate saying any of them are useless, but I guess it could go to Brooke, he just hasn't been around long enough to make such a huge impact or show us skills that are key to their survival.
You could consider the enies lobby arc dedicated to Robin, and Franky I guess.

Exactly, they had to share an arc. Franky got shafted because it was mostly about Robin anyway, and Robin got shafted because it all happened after she had joined the crew.
Interestingly enough I have to say Usopp…
Ignoring the obvious exception (the fight with Perona - but as mentioned before - no one in the crew is truly useless) every skill he has is already covered by someone else in the crew who also has other talents, which are indispensable.
For instance, Nami is also a pretty good swindler, Franky is an even better craftsman, and everybody else is a better fighter than him...
If I would rank the crew members from most to least useful, it would go like:
Altough I've grown to liek Brook, I orignially hated him, since I felt he took away Zoro's individuality, (altough, yeah, he fences - still a sword) - So for me it's Brook.
Well in Luffy's eyes, Brooke is the most useful (musician) along with Sanji (meat). Heh.
But yeah Brooke is definitely there. But besides Brooke, who else? Usopp? Robin?
considering the skills only, i'd choose brook
even though he's hilarious, he hasn't got any special skills
the only useful thing he's done so far is saving the crew by telling them how to defeat the zombies in thriller bark
but oda will probably think of something brilliant only brook could do soon
considering my personal opinion of the crew i'd have to choose usopp
his mentality is so … i can't even describe it
i've hated him since he joined the crew
but he is useful even though he is so annoying sometimes
but on the other side oda would only create a new character if he thinks he's useful
so i'll choose nobody
Sanji. I don't care as far as the story is concerned, I just don't like him.
usopp is so terrible at everything. They hardly use the cannons anyway, he can[t fix anything compared to franky…he's not a leader or a motivator and he's not entertaining...he knows nothing valuable...you guys can argue that being a musician is worthless but i know more than half of you don't leave the house without your ipods so clearly you know the value of music whether you're going to admit it or not....usopp=garbage
I always thought of Brook only as a musician and swordsman, but all this talk about Brook helping with moral makes me wonder if that's also a big reason why he's there.
The only reason Robin seems useless is because she won't get a chance to really show off her skills and knowledge until they're in the New World.
@Ao:
robin, a thousand times robin. there is no real reason nami couldn't play her role in the story besides the series telling you so.
That's almost like saying Zoro is useless because Luffy wouldn't need him if he had swordsmanship skills.
Sanji. I don't care as far as the story is concerned, I just don't like him.
It's not about your personal preference…:ermm:
wait wait. i just remembered! Brook can Run on WATER! thats something no one, especially not a df user can do.
Even though it hasn't been put to use, that is a skill that can definately make brook more useful
Though I'll hate myself for saying this, Usopp has to be the least useful Straw Hat D:.
@Elektrik:

I'll agree if he goes back to Sabaody running.
…or wherever Rayleigh is.

Why not? I don't find him helpful, either.
Why not? I don't find him helpful, either.
They'd be basically starved by the time they entered the Grand Line if it wasn't for Sanji.
Why not? I don't find him helpful, either.
no? .. so you think one of the other crew members would like to slave away in the kitchen nearly 24 hours a day to feed the black hole, also known as luffys stomach? none of the members who actually work on the ship should be in this discussion. and when it comes to work, sanji has probably the toughest job of them all, coz he doesn't even get one day off .. and he is working from morning to evening/night (depending on luffy). if you don't believe me .. try an internship in a hotel kitchen. trust me, after 10 hours of work all you'll think of is your bed since your legs don't really want to support you anymore, but oh .. only 6 hours of sleep left before you gotta work again. every cook earns my respect.
and he's not helpful? do you even read the same manga as i do? gosh, hating a character is one thing, but calling him useless and not helpful while he is -__- maaaa~, some people only see what they want to. how annoying.
Sanji. I don't care as far as the story is concerned, I just don't like him.
Like and dislikes aren't really the purpose of this thread. The idea is to discuss who in the crew is the least useful based on their skills…
Why not? I don't find him helpful, either.
You should elaborate.
