You know what the most popular manga in Japan is right now? It's called One Piece. It's about a pirate. A pirate with stretchy powers. Who wants to be King of the Pirates. The story is a mix of improbable action and slapstick comedy. It's goony, off-the-wall, and utterly crazy. Nobody could have predicted the popularity of this thing. Pirate comics were never big in Japan before. Neither were stretchy guys. And in pacing, dialogue, and art – especially art – it's unique. One Piece was a shot in the dark, but it's hit the bullseye, becoming the bestselling manga of all time in a period when the manga industry is in somewhat of a slump. Best of all, it's a lot of fun. I couldn't invent a better example of how original, lively work can succeed where timid imitation cannot.
words cannot describe how this have made my day.

If you look at the (mostly ignorant) comments you'll see that me and some J-rev goons fought in favor for the article.
I really went all out. -
Yeah,I see your comments.
Awesome….waking up to something like this always makes my day. -
Koe…..man I miss that guy.
-
Yeah, where did Koe go, anyway? o.O
I've rarely seen such a wretched abuse of the English language. I skipped over some 98% of the posts in disgust…
But the article was good, at least. As always, fine job at fighting the good fight, Funkmasta. Not that it seemed to do much good, but...

God, did I love that article. It also made me even more happier to hear about One Piece. It obviously is one of the best and original mangas I have ever read.
I never used tutorials though or drawing books. I think it is also easier to draw from your heart than rather have some confusing steps to tell you to draw big eyes and so fourth. Plus manga drawing doesn't come from practicing in 2 months, but quite some time (as for me… 7 or so years). Anyways I loved the comic review, thanks Tony Tony Chopper ^^
-
For some reason it reminds me of the things an annnouncer on Nickelodeon desribing a new cartoon would say. ;I
-
Even though I am one of those otakus that make their own manga, I agree 100% with this man. Why the hell do you think shows like One Piece are so popular? Because it's something different and original!
-
Gah! My last post…wasn't written by me! Rotten kids...
-
Holy shit, they mentioned As If ! in the article o__o I've known Nikki and Amy for years now. Mad props \o.
-
A good article. I agree with what the author says about One Piece. Unlike Nartuo which I view as being another DBZ inspired manga about absurdly superpowered psychic martial artists who hurl chi blasts (strip away everything from both series until you're left with the bare bone and I think you'll see where I'm coming from), One Piece, as pointed out in that article, takes a stab in the dark by trying something different and it paid off.
-
I think it's ok if your inspired by an artist. But artists shouldn't let that become their style. I did read an article that japanese companies are quite harsh when it comes to originality and thats what they want to see. But at first it seems original but slowly turns to another seen-before-manga, but One Piece keeps at it's originality (and thats why we love it).
The other article I read was similar to this review too…
-
OTAKU ZOKU SAN!!!!
-
Oh wow, that person mention Jen Wang's Strings of Fate. I love that webcomic so much, I saved all of them in my HD in the same folder as all my scanlations. Too bad Jen stopped working on that… :(
geppettosmonster: You fail, it's "soku zan". And I have a feeling you don't know what that means.
Edit:
After reading the entirety, including most of the comments (I skipped some of the latter ones because THE BAD ENGLISH BURNS!!!1!elevenhundredseventynine), I see that the people who need the article most are the people who didn't even bother to read it. They sound really young though, and hopefully as they grow up they will finally understand.Copying professional artists' art and making stupid comics with stolen plot point is part of the learning curve of anyone who aspires to be a comic artist. I'm sure many mangaka in Japan had drawn Doraemon or Son Goku when they were in elementary school or something. But there is a point when someone have to grow up and start trying to do something original.
And dude, that's an old, old article on a Malaysian comics community website. How did you find it?
-
Nice article, makes even more proud to be an OP fan. B)
-
Lemme put it like this:
Fan Art - Good
Making a series with the same art style and stolen plot ideas - Bad
Quick question though: What's an otaku (aside from fanboy)? I don't think the comments or the article mentioned what it actually meant (or I forgot).

An otaku is someone who is a fan of anime/manga. Fanart is good too.
-
I heard it had another meaning than that. Supposedly a negative term (unless you meant an EXTREMELY obsessive fanboy).
-
Yeah, I think there was another meaning as well, but I just noted down a simple meaning of it. I don't really like the name otaku though, the majority use it to describe themselves as huge fans of anime. I want to be the minority, hehe.
-
Otaku's another word for your home/house/etc. Came to be associated with fanboys 'cause, well, where do they do most of their fanboy-ing ?
-
Woo-hoo! One Piece is the most popular in Japan!! This makes my day dude!
