Chapter 553 "Battle of the Highest" Discussion

This is a war between Pirates vs Marines…lack of dialogue? what you expecting them to sit down and sign a treaty?
well actually…
-
You want the characters to narrate their actions?
Aokiji - "I jump up and freeze these 2 waves and the ocean. I'm so awesome ."
Akainu - "I am sitting here."
Mihawk - "And so I use my sword to shoot a shockwave across the ground towards WB."
Jozu - "And I block it with my incredibly shiny body."
Marco - "Look at me! I'm the climax of the chapter. I look like a blue ripoff of Ace but surprise surprise I'm not ! -
Um, the plot consisted of: the fights started. And that could be divided up as: Aokiji stopped Whitebeards tsunami and attacked with ice spears. Whitebeard broke him. Then pirates started to come out of their ships to attack. Hawkeyes slashed at Whitebeard but was blocked by Jozu (or is it Jose). Vice Admirals lined up in front of the pirates (sans Garp). Kizaru attacked Whitebeard, but Marco blocked his attack. End of chapter.
Alright, so maybe there wasn't that much lack of plot afterall. But now I don't understand what makes this chapter boring.
More like:
Two tsunamis were stopped by Ao Kiji showing the level of his power of stopping such gargantuan things with one hand each from a distance
He attacks Whitebeard and Whitebeard show he can crack the air and any thing in its path.
Ao Kiji makes use of great timing to prevent himself from being OTKd and at the same time totally immoblizes the ships turning the entire batte to a land battle with ship cannons.
We get a battle of Vice-Admirals including Buster Call ones (also Onigumo was shown with a Devil fruit) and New World Pirates showing Tsuru as a fighter too. Great appeasing images of battle and carnage.
Mihawk does something since like 500 chapters showing his strength related to a Whitebeard pirate and the strength of Whitebeard's own men. Joz is shown to have a devil fruit.
Kizaru attacks Whitebeard only to be blocked by Marco who also has a devil fruit. That's two major contenders with devil fruits revealed in one chapter. Kizaru fired a barrage of lasers that could take out one of those huge Saboady trees and Marco just took them all like they were nothing. This shows the level of Whitebeard's subordinates to be in the same level as Admirals.
As far as chapter goes, this had great plot progression chock full of matchups between the strongest men in the world and displaying and setting up power hiearchies.
So wonderful T_T

Garp - "Guess what! I'm not here anymore!"
Luffy - "Where am I?" -
Luffy fighting Akainu became a bit possible…
-
Donflmaingo is quite a funny character. He just loves drama. He looked so excited when Mihawk started drawing his sword. Fuck knows who the Shichibukai, except Mihawk, will fight. This is the hardest thing Oda has ever had to pull off…
-
Ace - "I wonder why they don't just kill me in all this chaos?"
-

To think this is only the half-way point;)
…
Have I said how much I love this goddamn manga?
-
@Kairouseki:
Ace - "I wonder why they don't just kill me in all this chaos?"
Killing him wouldn't stop the war. They want to beat everyone then kill him because they look better that way. Doesn't mean that they won't kill him if it looks like they're gonna lose or they're just gonna let anyone take him.
-
Luffy fighting Akainu became a bit possible…
….in an alternate reality.
No serioulsy what are you talking about.
Aokiji flattened him without trying, Kizaru would have done the same, unless Oda wants Luffy to get his ass kicked again by yet another admiral... -
With so many high powers around, I wouldn't be suprised if they killed Ace and never noticed.
-
I'd like to point out how sad some people in this topic are.
Is it that hard to enjoy a chapter without all the bullshit and unnecessary flaming? This is the war that's been building up for a long time now, and we're finally seeing it.
Saying it's being like Bleach is a big NO. Bleach has been all about fighting the last 9000 chapters, while One Piece switches the big fights between dialog and story advancement. Just because OP is having it's fair share of fights now is no reason to compare it to Bleach's borefest, nor being dissapointed for no reason whatsoever. Oda knows what he's doing after all, and he never dissapoints. At least, not me.
-
@Kairouseki:
Ace - "I wonder why they don't just kill me in all this chaos?"
More like "Damn these seastone cuffs itch."
-
@Thousand:

But they knew that even threatening to kill him would start a war so they might as well get it over with. Plus they'd look like idiots if they start a war and no even execute the reason for it.
Ace - "They didn't even let me put the dress on :getlost: ."
-
I didnt see Oda establishing match-ups, everyone attacked everyone, Ao Kiji, Kizaru and Mihawk went after WB, dont compare this chapter to latest Bleach chapters. Do you really believe that Oda will write two chapters about Mihawk trying to cut Jozu, are u nuts ?!
When did I compare this with Bleach. When the fuck did I say every panel in two whole chapters would be about Mihawk "trying to cut Joz". You still haven't answered how the war having matchups would make this "lol bleach". Considering you said Dragon Ball's main inspiration was Fist of the North Star, I expect your next reply to be hilarious. And I mean Conspiracynut hilarious. Don't let me down.

Ace - "They didn't even let me put the dress on :getlost: ."
What part of killing him or not won't stop the fighting didn't you understand? They said they were gonna kill him at three and at three they will. Killing him before would be bad for their image. Unless they're gonna lose so screw their image then.
-
Oh yeah I forgot it's not 3 yet. I totally forgot about the execution time.
-
So at 3, when Sengoku or whoever is about to kill Ace, Luffy's jet pistol will smash Sengoku or whoever in the face and stop it. Sounds good to me.
-
There's also the problem of the pirates now guarding Ace. Even if a marine tries to kill Ace, we have pirates who can move instantaneously to guard him.
-
i don't really think that onigumo has a df. i mean what could it be? Robin could do the same. imo it's a new technology invented by vegapunk and oniguma just tries it out.

OooooAnother Dragonball insulted fanboy…:ninja:
-
No it was your saying that DB was inspired by FOTNS. And why would that be an insult anyway?

I like this post
I also liked this chapter.
I wish this chapter came out before Jozu + Marco lost in the polls =(So are we not discussing the whole Robots + barret-hands? Either there is a robotic island, or Vegapunk has a lot of history we don't know about.
-
Also noticed scarface with a katana. Possible opponant for Zoro.
-
Addressing your whining
This never happened.
me blanketing you is dodging how exactly?
Oh, so you answered my question then?
You are literally implying that it's not relevant or important enough since it doesn't involve the main cast.
I'm actually not, but it's interesting that you reach that conclusion from what I said.
I already laid out why this chapter is if anything more packed with progression of plot than most.
You've read your list, right?
[hide]@TheHerald:
Funny because there were large events of action establishing the power hierarchy going on, the match ups, and putting into perspective exactly how high level the confrontation is in that people hyped as terminator unstoppable as Mihawk, Aokiji, and Kizaru as truly meeting their matches.
Robin shattered Aokiji, and Zoro/Sanji knocked his Ice Saber out of his hands. Aokiji blocked Whitebeards tidal waves, and was then shattered, reformed, froze the ocean, and then landed on it. What exactly was established that we didn't already know? Mihawk's attack was meant for Whitebeard, so it comes as no surprise that a diamond man blocked it. Power, not cutting ability. Kizaru was stopped in his tracks by Rayleigh, a retired pirate. Nothing new here. Did you really expect the Whitebeard pirates to go down instantly or something?
Ships were disabled as being part of the combat.
Ughh…........
The tidal wave was disabled.
This progresses the story about as much as Garp's tea and crackers did.
The pirates and divisions made their charge.
Tea and crackers.
The Vice Admirals were established as being the front line against these forces.
…
Two new devil fruits were revealed for two of the major players of the combat.
More, actually, but how does this progress the plot?
Mihawk who hasn't done anything for over 50 volumes is back in action.
So we now know that a guy who is lined up to fight…is gonna fight. As much as I am sure I will enjoy seeing Mihawk fight, seeing him swing his sword once this chapter was the pinnacle of excitement for me, with Nami's bikini coming in a close 2nd. The chapter didn't amaze me; that's all I'm saying.[/hide]

Considering you said Dragon Ball's main inspiration was Fist of the North Star,
I could write pages in order to prove to you that DB is inspired by Hokuto no Ken, but it is off topic and I dont have time to waste on guys like you…..
-
@Thousand:
(also Onigumo was shown with a Devil fruit)
i dont think he is a fruit user, but he can move his hair at his own pleasure, like Kumadori

Make a topic for it in Other Anime/Manga. Now. It'll be the best comedy thread ever.
-
I dont have time to waste on guys like you…..
The fact that you've apparantly compiled pages of evidence on anime comparisons suggests to me you do.
-
I don't understand what your problem is brennen.exe. Is every moment in the manga supposed to address the plot? Sure there wasn't progress to the plot but that doesn't mean this chapter was throwaway at all, in fact this chapter is a perfect example of why Oda is a good writer; he has already established the plot lines and ramifications of this massive confrontation, now he is adding flavour to this to keep our attention by way of introducing powers/abilities/personalities.
It is a great example of stuffing to augment potatoes.
-
We're on a forum… we've all got time to waste hahaha.

What a shame. I'm sure you'd produce a comedy masterpiece.
-
The comedy masterpiece is right here, in this thread, seeing you… the DB fanboy, talking about irrelevant things in this topic.
-
Would you just shut the fuck up and go away? You're ruining the afterglow.
-

facepalm
Fist of the North Star inspired DB about as much as any Bruce Lee flick did (they both have fighting in them lol), seriously the entire setting, tone, protagonist, expected age of the audience, and plot, all are vastly different. Hell I could find more similarities between Berserk and Fist of the North Star than Fist of the North Star and DB. Please tell me you're trolling. -
nobody gives a shit.

I agree. Some chapters need anticipation. Some need the events that were anticipated.
Nobody expected all this war anticipation to be for nothing, right? We all knew the war was coming, we knew the stakes, we knew the battlers, and now it's here. What's the problem? Luffy the main character will make his move soon enough.
We all know Oda normally doesn't run single-event chapters. There's always something going on somewhere else and that's what separates this series from Bleach. Bleach shows part of one battle a chapter. One Piece shows part of that battle + another event + what's going on at other places. This chapter was an exeption because it simply didn't have room for anything else, but it still had lots of content that was necessary for future chapters to progress.
-
Sooo….good chapter! I'm very interested in what Marco's power will turn out to be. Also the pirates that they showed before the VAs are the rest of Whitebeard's division commanders right?
-
Luffy the main character will make his move soon enough.
Luffy is essentially a nobody bit-player in this war. Literally any of the people who matter would swat him away.
He has been told twice he is a nobody in this fight, I think the quote was "ant caught in a storm"
That Luffy won't have much to do in this war is a giant plus in my eyes.
-
some of you take manga a bit too much seriously

In terms of physical strength Luffy is nothing. But obviously, being the main character and the future PK, he's likely to do something interesting. Maybe learn to control his haki… or do something else vital.
-
Cant wait to see the anime of some of this stuff. What an epic battle that has started.

Don't exaggerate. Luffy's as strong as any one of these rampaging New World guys. He's beaten two members of the group the World government is relying heavily on in this war. Difference is, he has the element of surprise and extra motivational drive. He could totally bypass the top guys who'd be busy with each other and fight against the inner forces to rescue Ace.

Ugh…just imagine if Toei was still on a one chapter pace when they get to this chapter.

I could see him fighting Smoker, you can bet he'll have atleast some role to play other than being the guy to physically safe Ace.

yeah, no
he better be an ant in a storm by the time he comes in
-
@dirt:

The fact that Luffy's gonna do something significant is a given. He's the main character. The top fighters being busy with each other as Luffy rushes in to save Ace is totally plausible. Also the ant in a storm bit was dealt in Impel Down.
Anyway, you're stupid so don't talk to me.
-
@Thousand:

Amazing how you arrived at this conclusion without seeing any of the New World veterans fight.
He's beaten two members of the group the World government is relying heavily on in this war.
Wrong.
He was left a blubbering mess by Crocodile twice and beat him the third time by Oda lobotomising Crocodile.
Moria was beaten by the Straw Hats and Moria.
Difference is, he has the element of surprise
It's amazing you think any of these real top fighters will have anything but disdain for a rookie in this fight.
and extra motivational drive.
The Marines have far greater motivation by preserving the law and order of the world.
It's funny that you think Luffy has greater motivation than the quote unquote World's Strongest Man in saving his son.
He could totally bypass the top guys who'd be busy with each other and fight against the inner forces to rescue Ace.
Let's ignore the head of the Marines standing literally 3 ft away from Ace and one of the three great Admirals sitting pretty in front.
