Sounds a bit odd to me if Eneru calls himself "a Kami" though.
New official Viz media topic V2.
-
-
Eneru: "No one can defeat me for I Am KAMI!"
Luffy: "What makes You a Kami ANYWAY!!!"yeah its gonna be wierd
-
I bet the readers will think Skypiea is ruled by some lady named Kami. >_> Interesting.
-
If they're smart they'll explain the term in a way like ''I am Kami, the one who rules over all!!'' or something like that.
''What kind of lousy ruler destroys what he rules?!''
-
This post is deleted!
-
What's the reason behind viz having to use Kami instead of God?
Are Viz not allowed religious references, or is it them not wanting complaints from the usual cranks?
@Yuugi's:
It is #81. Got it yesterday.
Cheers. .
-
5 bucks says that they'll have a translation note saying: "Kami means God in Japanese"
-
Great. Viz's contact form isn't working.
-
Yet again. Seems they're not even translating it this time, let alone changing anything. This is the same sort of crap everyone's arguing about with scans and fansubs. Random Japanese words thrown into English sentences sounds extremely awkward, and I'll bet they're not even using a note. Seems like they're assuming everyone who reads SJ has seen the English DBZ anime.
And anyone remember in the first chapter where Luffy says something like #%$^ instead of swearing?
-
He called Higuma a bastard on that very same page. Shouldn't that make up for it?
So now the people who complain about things being changed complain about things not being changed. Yeah, I think it should be God too, but that is just the very definition of unpleasable.
Seems like they're assuming everyone who reads SJ has seen the English DBZ anime.
Dragon Ball Z ran in Shonen Jump too, remember? They called him Kami-sama there.
-
Hm, I didn't read DBZ in the magazine. But still, NOT translating things now? I didn't like it in DBZ either.
Edit: And I think this'll confuse a bunch of people because in DBZ it was used like a name. And Enel referring to himself as Kami makes it sound as if he's the same person from DBZ, which he's not.
-
Kami is better then King, but it's still really stupid and a garbage change with no legit reason.
Viz is being overly and stupidly safe. -
I wouldn't exactly call it a change, it's just a nontranslation.
-
@Kairouseki:
I wouldn't exactly call it a change, it's just a nontranslation.
Exactly. It's just like scanlators not translating nakama.
-
Exactly. It's just like scanlators not translating nakama.
So, retarded, random, and a really dumb choice then?
-
So, retarded, random, and a really dumb choice then?
Yeah, usually the same bullcrap you have to put up with on Scanlations. Viz is a professional company however so, they shouldn't be pulling random crap like this. If there's a translation note, I'll go with it. Though if there isn't, I may have to rethink my buying strategy. >_>
-
So, retarded, random, and a really dumb choice then?
That sums it up, Viz plays host to average scanlators!
-
Kami, Wyper, Merry Go… 'da fuck? I'm starting to feel a bit queasy. Are they even trying? I don't even want to imagine what will happen to Impel Down and Amazon Lily anymore. (6 levels of Heck and drawn on bikinis for the loss.) This is really getting worse by the minute.
And for the record, I would HIGHLY prefer random symbols to words like "darn you," "shove off," and "you..." any day of the week. Then we can see whatever the hell we want.
P.S. Just read through the rest of the book descriptions, and now I can't get mad at them, since EVERYTHING but Enel being called God is kept correct (his name is Eneru for them, but I'm used to that, since it's probably more correct than Enel). Montblanc Norland, Skypiea, Shandia, Aokiji, Davy BAck Fight, and CP9 are all good. Jerks, not letting me get mad...
-
Still time to e-mail them and tell them you don't like it and ask them to change it.
-
They're not going to change anything because a couple people email them. Zolo is trademarked by Shueisha so that's not going to change. They're not going to use God because it's blasphemous I guess. The toning down of swears is done so it can be sold in Walmart and other stores like that. All of these increase sales (Zolo probably not but the others make it so they get a wider audience). They're not going to change them at the risk of losing sales because a few people email them and tell them they don't like it.
What they should do is at least change the rating on it to A like they did with DBZ.
-

All true, but other TeEn rated series they have use the term God.
They probably don't change it like for DBZ because One Piece has far more blood, and a good bit more smoking and drinking.
-
I find the few changes to be annoying….but certainly not worth it to not buy the volumes.
I mean Wyper even sounds the same as Wiper and it's better than Wyler.
Kami is God in another langauge, so it's actually a better way of skirting around an edit than "Oh Come My Way" was to Okama. Btw it's not blasphemous (I'm a Christian) in my opinion. I mean it's not like Eneru really is God or any form of deity...he's just a villain with a god-complex.
Zoro being called Zolo...yes it's annoying. But it's not new DX
As for the minor cursing...."hell" "damn" and "ass" being permitted in minor amounts would pretty much solve everything. Replace "blast you" with "Damn you". Replace "Kick his butt" with "Kick his ass". Insert a "what the hell?" here and there and a "Damn you" instead of "darn you" and you're good to go.
All the other dialogue is fine (with the exception of Luffy called Croc a minnow XD)
-
This weird bullshit is not only dumb, but doesn't work for Enel because they often call him "God Enel" in the Japanese, and I don't mean "Kami Eneru", I mean "GODO Eneru". So to keep this Politically correct BS, they would have to change things, not translate, CHANGE.
Viz is Pulling a Dragon Ball Z Dub on us here… and I don't like it...
-
I hate when they change the characters’ names. I’m planning on buying all the volumes through amazon, but I don’t know if I have that much money, I’ll probably buy the volumes with my favourite chapters first.
-
between all the terms changed by Funi and Viz..it gets confusing.
honestly as long as i know what the original term was ..i dont care..im supporting this series so is has a acceptable chance left.
Shove off is fine,IMO… at least it wasnt like"Forget it" or something lamer. -

Hmmm, Vol. 35 has Robin listed as Robin Nico, interesting.
I saw we should just shut-up about viz's stupidity and just be happy about the release. The more we complain, the more we become like the Naruto fan base, who kept bitchin about the dub.

Yeah, but the Naruto dub is completely different.
Viz doesn't change A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G. They translate over everything to a T and the characters all maintain their names. You don't see Viz randomly changing Rs and Ls all over the place do you?
If they decided to call him "Lock Ree" I'd agree with you.
-
I know this is probably going to start a war, but Eneru kind of bugs me too. I mean the only reason I can think of for them using that was the katakana, and it would be the same had it meant to be Enel.
First of all there's the Enel electric company in Italy. Then there's that (maybe this is just a coincidence) enel in Hebrew meaning "There is no god". Hell, even Ener has more going for it with it maybe standing for "Energy".
Again, sorry about whatever this starts.
-
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
I mean Wyper even sounds the same as Wiper and it's better than Wyler.
Not only that, but even the original "Wiper" is a pretty stupid name in the first place.
-
Yeah, but using a y instead of an i makes it LOOK stupid.
-
I really don't see the big deal. Like I said, "Wiper" is a stupid name, both written and spoken.
-
Well, why not spell it Waiper, or Weiper, or Wayeper, or Weyeper, etc? Because they look absolutely retarded. Same, at least for me, with Wyper.
-
People are actually complaining about Wyper….?
-
Nobody's complaining. I don't buy OP from Viz so it doesn't really bother me all that much. I'd just like to know why they spell it like that. And in general I hate words that use y as a vowel in the middle of a word, especially when it can be spelled just as well another way.
This is the discussion thread for the Viz manga and what I'm doing is discussing the Viz manga.
-
Well I threw an e-mail their way a second ago. Mentioned the hopeless act of getting Zoro back, the color walks and data books, and not censoring the Amazon Lily and Impel Down Arcs. I decided that Kami isn't that bad, seeing how we get to keep Enel's retarded joke, and Viz can protect soccer mom children at the same time. The only things to worry about in Skypiea now are names, keeping "priests" (I'm hoping that vassals is simply a term they used to refer to people under Enel's regime), and Heaven's Gate/Angel Beach.
-
I'm a little peeved at the toning down of the swearing and such, and I agree that the vulgarity is an important part of his character, but I'm sure we can all agree that the art is really what's defining him as a badass in this scene, not the words, right? Even the original Japanese printing has limits on how strong a swear they can use, right? (I actually don't really understand how Japanese view swearing in relation to age-appropriateness, so I could be wrong here) I figure that, since the characters are already not allowed to speak "realistically", that is, with the rudest words in the language at their disposal, why does it matter how many tiers are dropped?
That said, I am not happy with a trend of Viz changing things instead of just translating them. Even if today is inconsequential, they could later decide to reword certain segments and seriously screw up the plot or meaning of a line. My question is this, as someone who is buying the volumes principally to support One Piece in North America, with collection and appreciation as close secondary reasons, does buying them now send the wrong impression? Many animes and mangas are eventually released uncut in North America, I feel this would be good for One Piece too, but they aren't going to happen if the manga isn't successful at any level. On the other hand, though, good sales with the edits could send the message that fans don't care what is done with the series as long as it's represented in some form.
Anyways, just something I wanted to get people's opinion on. I've been reading One Piece for awhile, and I love it to death, but I'm somewhat of a casual fan. I don't really understand a lot about how the world of manga works.
Thing is, liked I've said before, with much of their Shonen Jump VIZ wants to keep a double-standard so they don't get any heat from parents and school librarians (this is an educated guess on my part). It doesn't matter if it's rated 13 and up, younger kids are still a big portion of the audience that buys these books.
As for whether you could be sending the wrong to VIZ, if they see enough reasonable fan criticism they'll consider it, I mean that's one of the main reasons, if not THE reason that we're getting this speed-up in the first place. But they'll only appease those fans if they can trust they'll consistently support the brand. For example, when sales of the "Naruto" manga started to go up they used more literal translations for names and terms where they were previously a little looser. They were still edited for content, but it was a good compromise. And I don't see what the point it of buying a prodcut simply to support, the main reason you should buy something is because you enjoy it. That's why I started buying it, not just to give money back for something I orginaly read for free but because I liked it so much I wanted to buy it.
As for my opinions on the change to Smoker's dialogue, again it wasn't that big of a deal. Sure, 'shove off' have the same "impact" as 'eat shit' (WOW, so much more powerful), but they still get the message across. Smoker is disrespecting his superiors, that line sounds pretty rude no matter what, and Tashigi was always a pretty timid character so that line still holds enough weight to fit the artwork. I feel like this is just another case of fans putting too much value in swearing, something that doesn't really happen in Japn, which is why there's so much of it in manga in the first place. It's not a big deal to have those kinds of things in kids' cartoons in Japan, just as it is with a lot of subjects that are taboo for children in America. By resenting this edit so much I think some of you guys are just feeding into that mentality.
-
I'm just gonna tell them to change everything to it's original form, they still have time to change the translations they have listed since there's a couple more months to go.
And this thread just gets more and more ridiculous every time. Seriously, I wish it was God Eneru too, but why is there so much complaining? You should be happy that they're at least TRYING to be faithful even though they're under censorship policies.
-
You're the only person attempting to be condescending to people who have offered civil criticism of Viz. Don't worry, we're laughing at you, not with you.
Please. The only thing you guys are doing is getting angry over this whole petty thing. But do as you will.
Actually, lemme me put more fuel to the fire: Viz's quote was actually lifted from the 4kids dub of that part. Have at it.
"Kami", huh? See, now THAT is awkward. I still like "Sky Lord" over "king" and "this"… Even if it was a 4kids term.
-
This is a discussion thread. I'm being civil in my complaints about Viz. I'm sorry if you want this thread to be all praising Viz and excusing their censorship and nontranslations, but I won't allow it.
-

It's ridiculous that they're expecting a random Japanese word (most of the kids who buy this won't get) to work for them. If they really felt obligated to remove God, they could've used 'Lord' and it would've worked just as fine.
-
This isn't directed towards anyone in particular, but I just find it amusing how a number of the people voicing their complaints are the ones who said that they're not going to buy the volumes anyway. What's the point, then?
Well, Kami isn't great, but at least they're acknowledging the source themes, and the dialogue and story elements should make it crystal clear what Enel sees the title as. Or maybe they're just banking on everyone having already read Dragon Ball Z, which everyone and their grandmother probably has by now.
As for Merry Go, that's been around ever since Vol. 5, so that's nothing new, it's just that they don't refer to it by name all that much until Skypiea or so, when the Klaubautermann story crops up. And soon, they'll have a new ship, so you won't have to get bent out of shape over it.
-
@The:

Lord has multiple definitions, God is God.
I think the way things are going on this thread just goes to show that fans will complain no matter how hard you try.
What I'd like to hear is of more fans actually sending their complaints to VIZ, but of course in a way that's not whiny and condescending like I'm seeing a lot of on this thread
-

Discussing my ass. You're just all-and-out bitching like how most anime/manga fans do about the most trivial things.
Really. Maybe Smoker's line is understandable. But now you're "COMPLAINING" (which you ARE doing, don't try to sugar coat it with the word "discussion") about "Wyper".
WYPER. FUCKING WYPER.
Seriously, you complain about that, then what else is there to complain about? Hmm? I think you just knocked the most petty one out the goddamn park.
God, I hate this fandom sometimes….
-
I don't care about Wyper. it's an alternate spelling of the exact same word, only now at first glance it doesn't have the apparent Toilet-connotation of "Wipe".
That's as dumb as complaining about "Gin" being changed to "Ghin" in the FUNi dub. It's to make the pronounciation clear because in English, people see "Gin" they think Gin as in the Acholhol, and that's pronounced "Jihn".
People tend to go "Gin means silver, they changed it!!"… Uh, no they didn't, They altered the way it's Romanized, just like some people Romanize Son Goku from Dragonball as "Son Gokuh".It also irritates me when people try to tell me "Gum-Gum" is Wrong, newsflash, it's not people.
The things that piss me off are the BLATANT changes.
Zolo, Merry-Go, Roguetown, "Oh Come My Way", Diggy-Diggy, Tweet-Tweet, And Kami. Yes, Kami isn't leaving something untranslated, it's a blatant Change. Wana know why? Because they don't always call him "Kami" in the dialog. Rather often he's called "God Enel" as in "Godo Eneru". God in English, not Japanese.
THAT stuff pisses me off. VERY VERY MUCH!!
-
Lets see: Neptunians, Kami, Zolo, Roguetown, Merry Go, always using a gold logo on the covers, toning down of swearing (not as big a deal as the others), did they use Miss Groundhogs day? if so that and the other name changes in Baroque Works if there are, Oh Come My Way, uhh… I think Sanji's attack names were changed, Tweet Tweet and Diggy Diggy...
There might be more but I can't remember them at the moment. Hope that gives you a couple pages of materian  .

Oh yeah, Sanji's attacks.
"Mouton Mallet".
Yeah…
And the thing is, I REALLY wana buy Viz' releases, I really do.
Look at the FUNi sets. I support FUNi 110%, I've bought every, Single FUNi DVD. Including Movie 8, and I didn't even LIKE Movie 8.If Viz translated the series the way it should be translated, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat!...
In fact, part of me wants to use that Whiteout method someone once mentioned... Just replace the few messed up phrases... -

Ms. Merry Christmas remained Ms. Merry Christmas. And is the gold foil really a big deal? I mean, really?

Ms. Merry Christmas remained Ms. Merry Christmas. And is the gold foil really a big deal? I mean, really?
I've never understood complaining about the Logo, even on the FUNi sets.
I mean, once they got to Believe and had to mess with the animation in order to use the Gold Logo I got SLIGHTLY irked, like, a very extremely tiny bit, but People were complaining about that LONG Before FUNi got to Believe.
It's really dumb. It's complaining for the sake of complaining.
-
The only changes I find annoying are:
Minor swearing
Zolo
Roguetown
Tweet Tweet / Diggy Diggy
Merry GoThere actually have been no artwork edits in One Piece unlike Naruto. So I hope that continues.
For all the complaining people do, 95% of Viz's dialogue / names are exactly the same. The artwork is exactly the same. The meaning is the same. The story is the same.
So what point does it make to not buy the volumes over these changes? I mean I guess if you can't enjoy them, don't waste your money, but really don't blame it all on Viz - a lot of One Piece fans who would prefer the original still manage to enjoy the Viz volumes.
