througout the years of reading Shonen manga and watching anime, i've started to realize that the charatcers in one piece are only one's that don't need a phiscal extra edge to win. In Naruto eveyone uses tricks and spells to win, (ninja's are so cheap). in Inuyasha they need jewel shards or special weapons to be good fighters with the exception of a few. In Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragon ball z everyone seems to need to upgrade or be taught a new fighting style like Gokus Kai-o-Ken (sorry if i spelled it wrong) or Yusukes spirit wave. but the characters in one piece seem to make it on their own steam and even if they are Devil fruit users they are limited to the attributes it gives them, so they are at a loss. if some one else feels this way please tell me cause i feel like i'm the only one

Luffy does upgrade, so he does not have to charge up like Goku. Your not alone.
-
Hey joe i think i missed that what upgrade does he get besides new fighting techniques
-
Very nice observation. I think the edge Luffy has is his creativity for moves combined with his gomu gomu powers. For example, Gomu Gomu Windmill was based off of Genzo's pinwheel hat.
-
luffy has the afro transformation which makes him invincible but that doesnt count right?
-
if luffy does have an upgrade like joe said what is it? i'd like to know
-
I don't think there is one, aside from the afro. :P
That's probably the first thing I noticed about OP fights, and what I liked.
-
thanks buccaneer
-
I noticed too. Its great huh?
Another thing….when shonen characters get mad or determined usually for no real reason they get literally stronger.
-YuYu Hakusho
-Dragonball
-Naruto
-BleachBut when Luffy does that he dosen't gain a cent of strength but just gets more determined. now instead of hopping around avoiding Kreig's mini-spears he just lets them hit him, no big deal.
-
well when luffy gets angry he seems to become more clever like when don kriegs spear blew him up he seemed to have a plan to break it, and he did
-
Well the character´s don´t really upgrade themselves (besides that super-saiya-afro ) since it is their iron will or as Zeff liked to call it "the Inner Spear" that actually all have from their first introduction.
The character´s all create new attacks, but it´s not them who determine the outcome of a battle, it´s the iron will. If Luffy wouldn´t have used Gomu Gomu no Storm on Crocodile then he would have used a different attack, but it was his determination to fight until the end that let him surpass Crocodile.
The only really new things they learn are actually surviving near death situations since these were all totally new experiences for everyone. Before they became pirates they´ve (probably) just been training their skills, but training is not as good in getting experienced as a real fight for life or death. It is a whole different level to work out or to fight someone to survive.
Other then that the only one who actually really upgraded himself is Zoro after he learnt how to cut steel. But other then that I think your observation is correct Cosmic Kid. That´s another reason why I enjoy One Piece.
-
But when Luffy does that he dosen't gain a cent of strength but just gets more determined.
I think he does get stronger when he's angry though. Either that, or when his comrades asks him for help. His will of protecting his comrades are really strong. ie. Protect Nami against Arlong.
And as for upgrades… Chopper upgrades himself by inventing Rumble Balls? Or Nami with upgraded Clima Tact? Or am I misunderstanding something here?
-
i've never tried to put words on it, but yes i had the same thoughts. i think the Zephos's sig is a good way to illustrate what you say for the other shonen

You are so right! I completely forgot about that. And now that you mention it, Usopp upgraded himself with dials.
-
true…the only people that doesn't seem to go under "upgrades" or "new training" are luffy, zoro and sanji the main fighters. Zoro's dumb weight lifting traning is not considered btw. The others are juz slightly or overly weaker then these that's why for the upgrades.
-
I enjoy them all having limitations. While Nami had her lil climate stick and no matter how hard she tried against Eneru with them, she still couldn't do anything because she was weaker. And then it took Luffy of all people who happened to be the natural devilfruit superior to Eneru quite a few tries to take him down because of Luffy's blunderous ways.
Probably another reason why this is one of the few anime I enjoy.
-
Yeah, I enjoy it too. The "upgrades" in other shonen series are annoying( ahem SSJ Ichigo, anyone?), but in OP all of them fight with all they have, and just grow in the battlefield, with real experience, not transformations and stuff(well, AfroLuffy is just….hum...the materialization of Luffy´s strong feelings, yeah, that´s it. :P ). The fact that doesn´t exist anyone who is "invencible" is clever, too. Even the more badass Devil Fruit has a "natural enemy", or a weakness that can be explored. (No Aizens here... :P )
-
i don't mind the upgrades that much, it's that fact that everyone has a "Secret" move that their master told them not to use!!!
annoys me how cliche is is. cough naruto cough
-
Well Luffy, Zoro and Sanji create they're own techniques
And the more they fight the better they get
The only one that's has a special upgrade is Chopper when he eat the rumble ball
And maybe Luffy when he was the Afro Luffy
Nami climate stick his more like a weapon upgrade then a (Nami) upgrade
But that's what makes One Piece cool, the determination is the main factor that makes the Strawhats going on winning every obstacle :D
-
they do upgrade in one piece, its just not as cliched&lame as upgrades in other series (dbz and naruto)
in one piece when they upgrade its almost always either a new weapon(climatact, usopps dials, zoro's swords), new fighting attack(luffys attacks, some of zoros&sanjis moves) or a new strategy(like when luffy used water/blood to fight against crocodile) against their enemy, and thats cool, its more of a subtle approach to upgrades
there are no long power up sequences that raise their speed/strength to a new devestating level
infact the only cliched power up that is one piece is that luffy gets stronger when he gets angry… oh and choppers rumble ball stuff.... but atleast thats a fresh take on it :P
but yeah, they all are pretty much always at the same strength level throughout the series (with the exception of luffy and zoro since its obvious both of them have gotten stronger as the series has gone on)

They all get stronger as the series goes on, the reason why you don't see it is because the adversaries they face are also getting stronger then the ones in the begining :P
Of course Zoro and Luffy are the ones that you see getting stronger, but I think Sanji and Chopper also are getting stronger ;)
And Usopp is more determined, and making new improvements

One thing I really like is that almost no two fights are the same. Every fight has its own characteristics, especially during the Alabasta arc. But when you look at Buggy, Kuro, Don Kreig, Arlong, Crocodile (The Baroque works battles) etc.., you'll find that a really unique move was employed, and the environment sometimes even played a factor in the battle.
I remember every DBZ fight always ending with some new souped up ultra power blast. Cell, Buu, Vegeta… (The only one that was different was Frieza being sliced apart by his own discs...And that battle had no development and went on for many episodes.)
Maybe this is why we are all anticipating the upcoming CP9 battles. We know we will see more uniqe moves. We might even see Ussop bring out that "5 ton hammer" again with dials to give it some real impact. All I know is that it's going to be fun.

"Omg I can't break Naraku's barrier - but wait, there's some offhand demon in a far land that I can beat, and who will make my sword turn red and become a barrier-breaker!" - from Inuyasha.
Won't see that kinda stuff in one piece - very refreshing.

Hey, c'mon. Everybody stop dissing Inu Yasha, it isn't that bad. It's from the maker of Ranma! RANMA!
-
Sorry for being rude but if you take out the picture from DBZ it sounds like a bunch of constipated guys ( this is from a former DBZ freak!)
The characters seem more "real" in One Piece to me that other animes and mangas.
Goku- AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!! BBBBGGGGGGKKKK!!!-fart noise

Well I held out for 130 eps so i couldn't have been all bad, but with one piece you can't stop watching, while with inuyasha you have to force yourself to keep watching. The plot actually feels like filler (except for small parts around ep 70 with the cats and around ep 100 with the 7-man army) and the incessant "inuyasha!" "kagome!" "INUYASHA!" "KAGOME!" "INUYASHAAAA"!! (etc) gets old really fast..
btw, I don't mind this whole "power up" concept.. just that in one piece it's rather surprising, and refreshing in a way, to not see it.

** yeah i used to be a DBZ freak also but as i got older it seem really boring i wasnt into it as much. i also agreed that the characters in One Piece seem more real in that they been through fights and life and by that they get stronger. even if you dont see a literal transformation like in DBZ, you can just tell…...aaaaahhhh yeah afro luffy kicks ass!

Power ups are fine, most things everywhere employ them. The problem with power ups are the fact that you run into the problem of: "I have to power up to beat the most power enemy in the universe!" then the next arc "I have to power up beyond the power I had before to beat this new enemy that is even stronger that the strongest enemy in the universe." That is what power-ups usually lead to. I'm glad one piece doesn't have those super power ups.

i hate inuyasha, that is the worst anime ever created
its always the same pattern
fight enemy>get back jewel shard>gay angst between kagome&inuyasha&kikyo>inuyasha curses narku
rinse and repeat
i really hate the angsty stuff with that anime though, stupid emo characters make west angry
