I could easily imagine Straw Hats having the best ship in the world but nobody who could use the damn thing properly. ~Keh, I just want that the new ship has a real wheel like in the Jump's cover of chapter 357.
The problem is that Nami has not only been established as excellent in navigation, calculations (e.g. managing to get Vivi up the tower in Alubarna) and these things, but she is also the one who "feels the weather and the waves" and all this (even though I think it is unrealistic that only Nami can use the waver, Sanji is extremely dexterous and Usopp should be imaginative enough to use the waver in a very inelegant way). She has been depicted as the perfect navigator and helmsman, she is the one who would FEEL how to turn the steering wheel.
I think the strawhats (or at least some of them) are already so well versed in many areas that they do not really NEED anybody:
Problems with mathematics/science? Ask Nami.
Problems with mechanics? Ask Usopp.
Need an artist? Usopp can draw.
Musician? Usopp can sing.
Botany? Ask the doctor and the cook.
Other languages? Humans have only one, otherwise we have Chopper.@Mar 31 2005, 04:43 AM

Where did you get that one from? I don´t even remember if Nami ever took over the part of the helmsman. Agreed she is the perfect navigator. But whenever Going Merry has to make it through a storm, a whirlpool etc. she starts giving orders to the other crewmembers this includes which Straw Hat has to take the part as a helsman. So far we´ve seen Zoro, Usop, Sanji and Chopper in that role but never Nami.

Yet she hasn't ever touched the ram head. The new ship could be much more difficult to handle than a small and simple bout like GMG is, therefore a helmsman come into a question. But yeah, a lot of jobs are already taken. If Franky joins the following positions are fulfilled:
Straw Hats
Captain
Swordman
Navigator
+Thief
Marksman
+Artist
+Inventor
Cook
Doctor
Archeologist
+Assassin
Shipwright
+Musician
I never warmed up with the idea of a musician. Having somebody whom sole purpose is to play music felt pointless and it is too. It would have only little or null contribution to the story or to the crew. And before somebody says Robin's an archeologist she has an enormous function. But a character with an addition side talent of music is a brilliant idea, dunno why I haven't ever thought about it.
Engineer. Someone to fix the Going Merry every time it gets the living hell kicked out of it.

My feelings exactly. I´ve always thought myself that a musician who´s just there to perform music would be a little bit dull but if he would have some additional abilities then I don´t see why there shouldn´t be one. I´m sure that if there will be a musician to join the crew Oda will create once again an awesome character with his own great backstory and his own dream. :)

I agree! Nami the perfect navigator! And hey, if it's unrealistic only she can use the waver, is it realistic to be able to stretch body like that. So it just indicates her ability that's unreplacable in the Strawhat team just like the others… best swordsman, best cook, best doctor, best lier(?), no sniper, etc.

Yes, she does. Not as often, since it isn't necessary. But when the storm comes, you need somone to lead to get out of the situation and that's the navigator's role. They don't need a helsman.
But I'm sure there will be new crew members. One male and one female. How do I know? Guts. <-Rufffy says to number 3. And they will be awesome as hell like current members. So not to worry. Trust Oda. He won't disappoint us. If someone's leaving, there will be moaning and threatning like 'I won't watch OP' a short while, but people forget. Not to mention new fans coming along. So all good. I'm looking forward to meeting new crazy character he creates for Strawhat crew!

You didn´t get my point at all did you? Nami is the perfect navigator, but she´s not a helmsman and she rarely ever touched the helm itself. Just because you´re perfect in orientation that doesn´t make you a good driver.
I´ll always use a different example to explain the situation. Let´s imagine they were on a space ship. So they have the captain, the phaser guy, the cook, the tough guy for land missions, the archeologist for land missions, a doctor and a navigator. BUT WHO THE HELL IS GONNA FLY THAT DAMN THING!!! I mean as long as they are in empty space everyone can pilot it, but when they get into a asteroid storm etc. I would let the idiotic captain be the pilot.
Same goes for the Going Merry (or whatsover the new ship will be). The Grand Line is the toughest sea route in the world. And so far that didn´t even came that far where only few have been before. So in order to manouver safely through everthing there is more need for a helmsman on board then for an swordsman or a archeologist. It is a essential part of any vehicle to have someone to manouver it.

Thanks for your explanation but I did understand your point. Nami is good in orinetation, yes, and also good at driving. If you have read Skypiea, she's the only one who can drive the waver (on the first day). Helmsman is a word disappearing with developing technology. We don't need the strong person to drive the ship any more as pressing button and dealing with small handle doesn't require strength. It requires delicacy. No more big helms like in Going merry now. That is only if they get a better ship, or update the GM.
I'm a newbie here and anyway glad I got a feedback..sort of. Yeah, of course you have your own thoughts towards Strawhat's future crews. and so be it. The reason I'm such a big fan of nami is that I'm also studying to be a navigator in marine! Thanks to one piece, the sea looks even more thrilling. I can't wait. :D

I understand your point. However I´m still convinced that the Strawhats would need a good helsman. Remember when they were entering Rivers Mountain? If it wasn´t for Luffy´s DF power Going Merry would already have been destroyed. And that all because the helm was broken.
Now a good helmsman should know how to both rough and gentle to the helm at the same time to use it to it´s maximum advantages. Just like Zoro as a good swrodsman knows how to use his Katana to cut through everything but still staying intact.
And as far nami driving the waver is concerned. I don´t think that driving a waver is the same thing as "driving" a ship. That´s as if I would say I´m a good Jetski driver so I must have been a good helmsman for the Titanic too. ;)

Well my feedback wasn´t intended negative. I was just disagreeing. ;) And being a newbie certainly doesn´t tell anything about the quality of someone´s post. That said it may have been your first post, but it certainly wasn´t lacking quality in argumentation. It was just a different point of view. Don´t let me response discourage you in any way.
Besides I love Nami too (as a character). And thinking that the Strawhats need a helmsman won´t change that. I just wanted to make clear that a ship with the best navigator in the world would also require the best helmsman in the world. I´m sure Nami would appreciate if such a man or woman would change the crew.
That said I´ll end my post with the words "Welcome to the boards Smokey!" :)
i think they'll get just a few more members. a shipwright (which i've got a strong feeling will be paulie, some may want franky but he's got the "franky family" to run when he gets back home; paulie's been crushed, the people he's made friends with and worked with turned on him, he should just leave and join luffy :D), and a musician of course lol. yea it'd be cool to have a female musician on board who can kikass too B). idk why but i'd like to see their new ship be a big one. well whatever size it's gonna be one hell of a ship i know that. i wonder what they'll call it. maybe they'll get another member after the shipwright that isn't a musician (idk, maybe a mermaid or merman or somethin cool like that).
What other crewmembers does the Straw-Hats need?
We had this discussions a couple of times already, so you wanna may check this thread for instance.
Anyways you should check the forums first with the help of the search feature whether or not something has already been brought up for discussion or not. But no bad blood here, since you´re a newbie you might have not know that. So enjoy the other thread. :)
EDIT: Topics merged.
If anyone wants to disagree with my action, feel free to take it up through PM. Sorry for the mix-up.
What about a catfish merman who can kung-fu fight? He could be the helmsman.
I wasnt hoping that Robin would join…until she did.
But, what was the reason Oda made an archeologist first not a musician or some kind of other guy/girl?
The reason was to establish the Porneglyph´s, the Rio Porneglyph, the ancient weapons, the True History text and the fact that Gold Roger (and maybe even One Piece are connected to it.
Without Robin they wouldn´t have been at Skypiea, we wouldn´t know that Gold Roger considers the Porneglyph there as so important that he doesn´t take the golden bell with him, and actually we would have no clue what Pluton in Water 7 would be.
I'm still going to keep wishing that both Franky and Paulie join them….sigh
Does anyone think that Luffy will end up with ten crew members like he said in the first episode? I heard that right now, they're looking for a shipwright. As Cosmic told me before: The eighth member could be anyone.
Paulie has the necessary things every Straw-Hat crewmember needs:
A Past
A Dream
And a Fighting Style
I'm sure he will become the next crewmember.

Yep, I think it has already been mentioned in this very thread before. If not then it must be elsewhere in this forums.
The way how Oda works and operates we can be sure that there will be at least ten Strawhats before the story is over. The only thing that is unclear to many is whether Luffy meant he´ll find ten nakama or if he thinks that ten in total (including him) should do fine.I personally hope that he looks for ten nakama because that would mean that we´ll get three more after the carpenter joins. One (the last one IMO) will be a musician, another would be very logic if he/she would be a helmsman and the third I don´t want to guess because what I want doesn´t mix with what the rest believes here. :P

Well, the fighting style being boring thing was just opinion.
**Well basically yes it is just opinion but actually his fighting style is just swinging the ropes. There´s no difference in his rope swingin actions. For instance Zoro is basically a sword fighter but he has so many different attacks which makes them less repetative and thus not boring.
But if you always do the same stuff then it is basically boring.
But he doesnt do the same stuff. -- He has 2 attacks that is almost identical, those are Bowline knot Death Lift and the other attack is Bowline knot air-something, Then he has a crowd clearing attack that he used against FF and he also has Hitch Pipe knives. I think Franky is more boring becasue it seems like we already seen all his attacks. And we don't need more fist fighters, we already have Luffy and Choppa, that enough.
I don't think either of their styles are boring (Franky is the master of ambushing!), but I'd like to see Pauly do more than what he's done so far.
In Paulie's past he was friends with a merman named Tom. Who worked with Gold Roger. While Tom was on his way to his execution, Paulie yelled to Tom that someday he will build the greatest ship in the world.
…....?
1. Franky is the one who grew up with Tom, along with Iceburg, who's something like a brother to him.
2. No one ever yelled anything like that to Tom.
but i have a short thoughts ..i think some1 did yell something like this, but not paulie ..but im not sure am i right … my memory is not really good ..so yeh .. hope it's right lol ..

Exactly what I wanted to say. From reading up to chapter 369 I´m really curious what his past and dream are.

Me too. The only real tidbits we know on Pauly's past is, that he was Iceburg's apprentice, who he trained up to be the shipwright that he is today. He's apparently lived on the island since he was very young, and he's witnessed the slump of W7, but also Water 7's revitalisation through Tom's workers, and Puffing.
So his connection to Ice or at least his passion for carpentry, probably started at a very young age. So I don't think he would've had a very turbulent past or rough childhood, more like a very ideal upbrining, learning his trade with the man he idolized.
As far as dreams goes, well we know his passions & beliefs and they are heavily interconnected to Galley-la & Iceburg. So it could be something relatively straight forward (ie. World's no.1 shipwright) or maybe Oda will surprise us?
I hope it wouldn't be that, he really doesn't seem like the type.
I skipped a couple of pages becuase my connection is bloody slow, so this might have been already mentioned. But if the crew member is going to get a Musician, then obviously his/her fighting style should revolve around their instrument(s) Now if if somebody like I-no from Guilty Gear would be in the world of One Piece, i'd go crazy in love. But knowing Oda, he/she would probably have some sort of custom made instrument than combines a bunch of stuff, like a piano, guitar, saxophone, etc. THEN AGAIN Oda might put a twist on that and have somebody eat a devil fruit that made his/her body parts into a freakin xylophone.

well a musician would value his instrument and not use it to attack people with… kind of how sanji doesn't use his hands because they're important to his cooking.

That is actually Franky you´re refering too, not Paulie. Paulie is the rope guy who doesn´t like girls with short skirts and works for Galley-la company.
Franky is the cyborg with a hawai shirt, Popeye arms, the cola in his belly and who´s always feelin' super. Other then that he was Tom´s aprentice and wants to build his dream ship. ;)

Tell that to thrash metal bands. It should be the opposite as we already have Sanji for that. I can see Nami getting all pissed off at the expenses the musician has just to replace his/her instruments, Luffy goes along with it becuase all he wants from the musician is to play.

Just what I was about to say.
Personally, I wouldn't mind if their current roster is left intact, but I have a feeling that they desperately need another female character. The thought of Vivi rejoining the crew isn't bad at all (remember, Oda did crazier stuff than this…).
As for the powers... I'd like to see a nakama that can use bow and arrow (like Marvel's Hawkeye or DC's Green Arrow), that would be cool.
ill say they need a musican since luffy always wanted one. fights with her instrument but has devil fruit power.
yea i agree if they get a musician, he'll use his instrument as a weapon. i'd liek to see him/her with an instrument that was customly built for that purpose :D. i'd also love to see a priest as a new member. idk why, but a character like wolfwood as a pirate would be kikass imo. that'd be pretty cool if wolfwood just showed up and was really a relative to luffy (nicholas D. wolfwood XD).
about the pauley/frankey thing, i'm beginning to think that they'll both join. i think the new ship will be pretty big and they'll need more than one person to manage it. to me, pauley looks more like a straw hat pirate. i can't really picture franky as one but so far he's got what it takes to be one of them. i just wanna see pauley in that crew, he's a cool dude B).
