You mean the sparklers? Yeah, they should, but I guess they think Little Kids will drop them on their lawns and cause a huge Forest Fire.

Again, My neighbors didn't give a damn about the sparklers prohibition anyway. Haha.

Hey wait a minute, my post was after yours, and now it's behind it.

Default I Don't Know If This Was Noticed But....

    October 19, 2006
    EDITORIAL
    A Dangerous New Order

Once president Bush signed the new law on military tribunals, administration officials and Republican leaders in Congress wasted no time giving Americans a taste of the new order creadted by this unconstitutional act.

Within hours, Justice Department lawyers notified the federal courts that they no longer had the authority to hear pending lawsuits filed by attorneys on behalf of inmates of the penal camp at Guantamano Bay. they cited passages in the bill that suspend the fundamental principle of habeas corpus, making Mr. Bush the first president since the Civil War (NOTE: writer made an error here, should be since President Lincoln) to take that undemocratic step.

Not satisfied with having won the vote, Dennis Hastert, the speaker of theHouse, quickly issued a statement accusing Democrats who opposed the Military Commisons Act of 2006 ofputting "their liberal agenda ahead of the security of America." He said the Democrats "would gingerly pamper the terrorists who plan to destroy the innocent Americans' lives" and create "new rights for terrorists."

This nonsense is part of the Republicans' scare-America-first strategy for the elections. No Democrat advocated pampering terrorists-gingerly or otherwise- or giving them new rights. Democratic amendments to the bill sought to protect everyone's right to fair trial while providing a legal way to convict terrorists.

Americans will hear more of this ahead of the election. Tey also hear Mr. Bush say that he finally has the power to bring to justice a handful of men behind the 9/11 attacks. The truth is that Mr. Bush couldhave done that long ago, but chose to detain the illegally at hidden C.I.A. camps to extract information. He sent them to Guantanamo only to stampede Congress into passing the new law.

The 60 or so men at Guantamano who are now facing tribunals-out of 450 inmates- also could have been tried years ago if Mr. Bush had not rebuffed efforts by Congress to create suitable courts. He imposed a system of kangaroo courts that was more about expanding his power than about combating terrorism.

While the Republicans pretend that the bill will make America safer, let's be clear about its real dangers. It sets up a separate system of justice for any foreigner whom Mr. Bush chooses to designate as an "illegal enemy combatant" It raises insurmountable obstacles for prisoners to challenge their detentions. It does not require the government to release the government to release prisoners who are not being charged, or a prsoner who is exonerated by the tribunals.

The law does not apply to American citizens, but it does apply to other legal United States residents. And it chips away at the foundations of the judicial system in ways that all Americans should find threatening. It further damages the nation's reputation and, by repudiating key protections of the Geneva Conventions, it needlessly increases the danger to any American soldier captured in battle.

In the short run, voters should see through the fog created by the Republican campaign machine. It will be up to the courts to repair the harm this law has done to the Constitution.
I do not know the author, but it was in The New York Times. In a nutshell, this editorial talks about how non American citizens can be accused of a crime they are onnocent, and can still go to jail. Habeas Corpus means "Body of Evidence". We know can not have that; if we are taken by false accusaton, it does not matter. There is no trial, you just go straight to jail. Now this doesn't apply to everyonein the U.S. This only applies to the aliens of the country (i.e. Asians, African Americans, Indians etc.) Also to American citizens. For example, let's say a Korean guy is driving around somewhere like New Jersey. Nothing happens because there are so many Asian Americans in that East Coast Area. But somewhere like Norht Dakota or Ohio, people think that Korean is from outside the country; a foreigner. It also endangers our soldiers over in the Middle East(in a way). What if they capture one of our soldiers, that country can also say, "Oh, America don't go by the Geneva Conventions why should we?" Meaning any soldier of America can go to jail and be tortured rightaway. It's not like Bush will take every foreigner and see them as an "enemy combatant" but this really is endangering our country, although Republicans think this would bring more safety. This also happened during the Civil War. In the south, there were people who lynched African Americans known as the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). So Lincoln signed the Military Commisions Act to capture every KKK member out there. Reason being, since they were all wearing masks, it was extremely diffcult to hunt down each one. So once the government sees a man or woman in a white wardrobe, they can immediately arrest them without any evidence.

I read this in the newspaper today. It disgusted me to no end. I could find a website with the article, so I typed a few of the paragraphs from the paper.

In her five years working as a grocerry bagger at the Ralphs supermarket in Pasadena, Shantie Maraj had never missed a day of work -- or even reported late.

So Saturday morning, she woke up before dawn and took the bus from her Eagle Rock home to the grocerry store on Colorado Boulevard, arriving minutes before the 6 a.m. opening.

She went about her routine, first tying hellium-filled balloons to the store's exterior and then heading for the 60-foot flagpole near the front entrance to raise the American flag.

But in the pre-dawn darkness, Maraj, 62, did not see the black steel shopping cart that someone had tied to the flag rope and hoisted to the top of the silver-colored pole.

When Maraj unwound the rope, the 50-pound cart came crashing down on her head, fracturing part of her spine.
Alberto Valasquez, 28, a fellow grocery bagger, said he was working inside the store when the incident occured.

Another employee came running through the front entrance screaming, "She's dying," Valasquez said.
Valasquez ran outside carrying towels to sop up the blood that was pouring from Maraj's head. "It was bleeding everywhere," Valasquez said. "I thought she was going to bleed to death.

After hours of surgery at Huntington Memorial Hospital, Maraj's spine was stabilized and she was expected to survive.

She showed no sign of brain damage and was able to move her legs, said hospital spokeswoman Connie Matthews. But hospital oofficials said her long-term health prognosis is still unclear.

"This is a loving person and now her life is forever changed," said a close friend of the victim.

Now, both Pasadena police and many shoppers at the Ralphs market want to know who placed the cart there.

Police strongly suspect pranksters entered the store's parking lot the night before and raised the trolley. Still, detectives said they are not ruiling out a deliberate act intended to cause injury.

There are no witnesses and no leads. Surveillance cameras on the side of the supermarket and across the street at a car dealership were not pointed at the flagpole. Officials are asking anyone with information to come forward.

In responce to the firework thing, a page back; I remember a year or 2 ago, we had stupid kids in toronto throwning them at eachother in the streets. This is how stupid people ruin it for the rest of us.

And if pirate costumes are so popular this year, why can I only find ninja swords! *give suspicios looks*
