Thread: Volume 100 Predictions/Discussion

I've seen that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has gone over 100 volumes since 1987, with over 950 chapters. Not sure how often people complain about that series being too long either.

Am I the only one who’s sad that we’re not getting a Villain cover only volume for the beast pirates?

I mean this triple cover volume spread is definitely awesome, just wish we could get the villain cover too

Jojo probably gets a pass because each part is almost standalone enough to feel like it's own work with a distinct beginning, middle and end, while being long enough to feel developed and substantial. Araki could have been an author with eight published series, but he decided to make them all part of the same world/family history instead. Which was probably a smart move in terms of shonen audience retention, compared to other authors trying to come back after their first success. Also means the series gets to be an everlasting cash cow like the editors want without stretching out the story or avoid reaching conclusions in any way that makes it worse.

I'm sure some still do complain, but the series has made some legitimately ingenious moves to keep itself from developing the issues and complaints other super long-runners see.

At least we got the villains colour spread instead. Give it time, I'm sure someone will made an edit to squash it into volume cover dimensions for a what-could-have-been cover.

Could've been a better cover, it is volume 100, but still, great cover from what I can tell so far. Now I can finally get my expectations back to normal. For my money, Oda mostly delivered with volume 100. A few slow chapters but also a lot of bangers, and most importantly bangers with series-wide implications.
    Croc or Enel would never.
Wanna see the "ancient civilization destroyed" thing done really well? FFXIV did a great take on it. The bar's high for One Piece to beat.

Jojo is 8 different stories that are all 5-25 volumes long, between three and five years, with only a little connective tissue between them. Especially after part 3.

If you're just interested in one given Jojo story, you only need to get a small chunk of it and you're fine.

No one complains about it being long because it isn't. Its basically an anthology from one author. Which serves to give it name recognition and keep momentum even when he takes a chance on something new and crazy.

It's kind of like how all of Johji Manabe's works are one big connected universe, but no one thinks Outlanders is 80 volumes long... even though Caravan Kidd and Drakuun and Capricorn and Rai are all part of the same tapestry.

I could use other examples but I like mentioning Manabe, he's my favorite manga creator and its a crime he isn't bigger than he is. (I am in no way saying he's the best, or that made the best stories, or the best characters, he did not, but for overall story flow and humor and art he's my fave.)

I guess it just never got big enough in the west for people to think about it like they do One Piece. There's not enough investment for the complaints to surface.
I read 40 volumes of it (because I love mystery stories and can read even the most mediocre ones) and Conan has a "plot" if you want to call it but yes, there have been very little to no progress in the main plot while the focus of the series is murder mysteries or crime mysteries and stuff like that with lots of them being "short" while there are ones that are a bit longer like maybe a volume or half a volume long.

Probably because its old and predates any current community.

Johji Manabe. He's best known for Outlanders which he did from 85-87, which had a short OVA 30 years ago. (45 minutes to cover 1000 pages so its a pretty bad representation.)

His longest project was Ginga Sengoku Gun'yūden Rai, from 93-01, which was 27 volume and had a 52 episode anime,

Dark Horse published a bunch of his books around 95-98, as comics and then as trades, still in full comic books size, BEFORE the big anime/manga boom, and when the internet was still starting, so it failed to find a big audience. (And they never quite finished releasing one of the series) . So he basically predates fandoms making everything available with scanlations and subs by just a few years. It's impossible to find a good sub of Rai, only a chinese bootleg translating it two times over.

He mostly did big sci fi epics with organic spaceships and the premise was generally "shmuck meets warrior girls in bikini and they fall in love" and had samurai and animal people secondary characters. Right up my alley and I love his art.

He's still doing stuff, but since he never found big success he's mostly moved onto doing much easier pornier stuff, which is fine but a shame. He deserved to be a lot bigger than he was.

A lot of things on the internet make me feel old these days. This post was the first thing in a while to make me think about how young I actually am instead, so thanks for that.

It had some bang chapters mixed with some meh ones. It ends with a bang in the form of chapter 1014 like Mr. Captain M predicted although there was a miscuculation as it's title (Life's Lousy Actor) is not fit to name the volume. So many chapter's titles this volume were just reference to specific characters.

Oh good, I was hoping they would hype it up like they did chapter 1000; it's just as big a milestone.

Wonder if we'll get an earlier-than-usual reveal of the completed cover...

I don't know what kind of vol 100 celebrations I was expecting, but a space flight was not part of it.

I was just thinking recently that for such a big milestone, 100 isn't really set to have anything special or commemorative in its pages. Chapter 1000 and the WT100 results were both in volume 99, and the 50-character poll spread is set to be in volume 101. Hopefully the space thing gives them something unique to put in the endpages.

They could use the Where's Wally thing as well maybe, but given it's only just now being shown, it might be a volume 101 thing, if it makes it into a volume at all.

Chapters 1,005 to 1,014, most likely.
Wano predictions: There will be 5 acts; All Straw Hats will get fights, some in Act 4; Big Mom Pirates will arrive; Carrot will have her moment, but won't join; Yamato will be a Kouzuki samurai and Wano's Guardian; Shanks will visit Luffy in Act 5; Next arc is Mary Geoise.

I like the art that shows Luffy saluting on a sea of stars. It seems very fitting.

I imagine vol.100 is going to sell like crazy given its a milestone volume and Shueisha will give it a high push on release.
