I want that and more. Give me interactivity. I want Snap, but to catch the pokemon in their natural habitat instead of taking pictures. I want the legendary and mythical pokemon encounters to feel appropriately weighty and difficult and more like boss battles than just slightly tankier and harder to catch pokemon. I want a post game that acknowledges my accomplishments with a world that opens up in ways that feel natural.

Gen 2 did it perfectly in my opinion. The opening up part at least. You get an entire other region with stronger trainers and eight more gyms to fight through. Plus Mt silver and Red's boss fight. I'm hoping for something like side quests in legends arceus. Isle of armor and crown tundra were good steps in the right direction, but still not enough. Hopefully they'll take those lessons and have more to do in any potential future dlc or expansions.
    Gonna give ya the D.!

Man, I've been hoping for a gen 2 style second region since gen 2 released. Gen 3 is my favorite, but I can't say I was disappointed when there wasn't another region to explore at the end. I always wonder whether they would be able to implement it if they continued their sprite based method on the 3DS and/or Switch since they're much more powerful, but I doubt they'd want to given the development time they get. (and considering they barely pulled it off with gen 2)

I think gen 2 pulled it off so well because Kanto and Johto are physically connected and easily accessible to each other. As far as I know all the other regions are their own landmasses. It's doable, but unless the regions are connected, it wouldn't be a seamless transition. Like how the isle of armor and crown tundra are much smaller than Galar.
    Gonna give ya the D.!

Sinnoh is actually north of Kanto and Alola is between it and Unova. I think they could also do Galar --> Kalos if they are really all in on them being Britain and France. Just a channel away. Really, only Hoenn seems isolated, but if they wanted they could say it was close enough to any of the regions considering that there isn't an official World Map.

Was Sinnoh confirmed to be connected to Johto and Kanto? I thought that was just a theory?(one I personally subscribe to, but still) I didn't know the exact placements of the other regions though. I do love learning the geography of the pokemon world.

So while I'm not really interested in Pokemon Unite for some of the reasons mentioned already, its release and the buzz surrounding it pushed me into looking into some other mobile Pokemon games. I tried some Pokemon Go for giggles, and right now Pokemon Masters EX.

The latter seems to be your average cashgrab casino game, but the soundtrack is amazing.

Some tracks are really curious, at least for someone who stopped following the franchise after Gen 3

Masters has a MUCH better soundtrack than you would ever expect from a mobile game. The remixes are all so good and clearly done with tons of love. The game itself is also pretty fun honestly, but I've been playing since day one so I have no idea how it feels coming in late. Here are a few of my favorites:

    Shauntal battle:

I preordered the Dual pack for me and my gf and legends a few weeks ago. I know I've traded and stuff with people on AP and look forward to more of it for these games.

The game is predatory from head to toe and I think it's unethical to combine these casino methods with a franchise partially aimed at children, but I must say it's unexpectedly fun. I guess the content isn't very exciting for those who played all the games (or maybe it is..?), but for someone like me, who doesn't know 3/4 of the characters they added since Ruby & Sapphire? It's perfect, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the design of the gym leaders and this new Fairy type. Very fitting retrofit.

    My favorite "new" trainer designs:

Cynthia, Alder, Gay Rights Giovanni, Guzma, Nanu, Kiawe

    Cynthia is top though.

    _______

Look at the current tease going on:

    Spoiler:

The game really does best what it's allowed to do: look good, sound good, be exciting.

I love that they stayed true to the old Sugimori art here. Looking forward to it!

You have good taste my friend. I do think they charge outrageous amounts of money for terrible odds. I don't play a lot of gacha but it's certainly way more of a ripoff than anything else I've played. But they production value is there. The stories they write are also all very well-done, with proper tributes to the original games and a full understanding of the characters they are writing.

why does the background colors still look unnecessarily saturated and soulless? It just feels like a SwSh game with an new superficial paint and new mechanics

Seriously, Pokemon is the highest Grossing media franchise of all time, why don't they put a little more love and care into it

look at this series, a no name franchise doing the same concept as Pokemon Legends Arceus and look how jam packed it is with stuff to do how great the visuals are and how much they put into a four minute trailer (which they say doesn't even show 10% of what the game holds)

seriously no name studio/franchise vs the Juggernaut that is Nintendo/Pokemon, and look which one loos better

I'm pretty hyped for Legends: Arceus, but holy shit, that DokeV game is gorgeous. I'm definitely going to be looking more into it.

I think the mainline games exist only to sell merch nowadays, the games don't even make much of the Pokemon company's total revenue.
They always pull the same trick before the release with the massive amount of money that can afford to put into market to downplay the inadequacies of their release.
I had high expectations for Legends but I doubt it will change much because of the limited time (they rushed, AGAIN) and the towns layout look like someone made it based on a rpgmaker template with how it looks so grided and generic.
Nintendo might be running on 2000s understanding of online but most of their flagships have been re-worked and that is just booming with creative.
Despite the hate, I do believe Nintendo cares the most about putting something out that is fun and innovative.

For some reason, probably due to the ownership percentage that they lack over this IP, Pokemon is constantly being screwed over and has become the gargantuan that is too big to fail yet somehow refuses to attempt at anything new that is significant. Even if the mainline game tries something new and it fails, the people who buys a large amount of merch won't really give a shit because the large majority don't sit down and play through a new release.
The safety net is so firm and wide I don't have an inkling to try an understand why they are still like this but if I have to wager a guess, the main decision makers only see the mainline series as an opportunity to introduce another dozen of merch to sell.

Legends might looks new and introduce something fresh but essentially everything is just a re-paint and more roundabout way of doing things that already exist before. I do hope I am wrong when the game releases and this is too long to be called a constructive post and is more of a rant but yeah, that's about it.

The gen 4 remakes are reaching a point where they look improved enough over the originals that I might bite.

PLA definitely looks interesting but given Gamefreak's long-established legacy of screwing up the seemingly obvious, I don't have a ton of faith that the major gameplay changes they're implementing won't be heavily flawed.
