Robby doesn't like the dub, so he wants to watch it in Japanese, with subtitles. But since he didn't really have time to sit down and actively watch the episodes, he has just been letting it play in the background. Since he is watching in Japanese though, he can't really follow the dialogue when the show is just running in the background, so that's a subpar solution and thus, he hasn't watched a lot of episodes yet. Did that help clear things up?

I've been watching some of the eps via Pluto TV and yesterday they played the Going Merry Funeral episode and wow the flashback with the song playing was a bad look for FUNi. Some parts of the song would have it's lyrics subbed on screen, some parts wouldn't; some times while it was playing over a character speaking the song would be subbed and what was being said by the character was skipped over. Pretty much the whole flashback+song was that way, it was a huge mess to follow

1. That just generally happens, insert songs have wonky subs usually no matter whos they are.

On the DVD, that scene has song/dialogue subtitles on the top/bottom with different timing. On the disc that's encoded as a single track that's refreshed every time one of the lines changes, sometimes way quicker than a subtitle normally would. Presumably, at some point the subtitles were converted to a format that didn't support overlapping like that and a bunch of the lines were thrown out. Given that they're apparently using the "HD Remasters" of 1-206, they probably got the episodes without going through Funimation, like Netflix and Crunchyroll did.
