Thread: What is happening? Why are the recent episodes 95% flashbacks?

This is getting annoying as fuck. If they need filler why don't they just create a random filler arc instead of this flashback b.s?

Or just expand the reverie shenanigans between the characters there. I tried watching one of the reverie episodes early on, after being out of the anime for years, but holy smokes was it a slog. After being halfway done with the episode and all they showed were terribly drawn flashbacks I quit again. Fk the anime till Wano, then I will give it another shot.

Or they should just do less episodes a year and fix all problems

It's also a convenient way for them to insert the more marketable and ratings generating Strawhat crew into these episodes.

It's not the first time they've done this. I picked back up watching pre-Fishman Island arc and I almost stopped because it seemed like nothing but flashbacks and every character ever reminiscing about Luffy and having an individual reaction to seeing him in the newspaper...TWICE, for two different articles, I think. It even became a joke with my husband because we were playing D&D and I had to skip out a couple of weeks due to work and he was like "we'll just spend the whole time having each character react to a photo of you as filler"

The current director really doesn't seem to like filler arcs much, which is sad. I think all we get now are the movie linked ones? I'd prefer even an average filler arc to this. I'm not asking for a G8 stroke of genius, but something like Ice Hunters would be fine. As long as it's not Apis/Zenny/Little East Blue tier I'm good.

I miss Kounosuke Uda being in charge of the show. Hopefully Tatsuya Nagamine will have a more open mind about ways to stay behind the manga without ruining episodes when he becomes Series Director next month.

It'll be nice when One Piece Kai does a better job of the Reverie in 2058.

GOD THAT MAKES ME FEEL FURIOUS! I hate that scene. Why did Toei feel like Jinbe needed to be nerfed for the sake of filler?

I would rather go the opposite way and have the manga pick up the pace and finally finish the story. I get that Oda likes to takes detours and to explore various parts of the world he has created and go deep into various characters but come on. It has been decades already. Can't he just actually finish the story and then go back and do background story on villain #245 grandma? People would still buy it. I swear I used to love this show but it's getting frustrating to the point where it's ridiculous. Like twenty episodes put together move the story line as much as one episode of a normal show

Hell at this point I would take the FMA solution where they just ignore the manga and finish the anime by themselves and then once the manga is finally finished(in I am guessing 15 years) they can do a second anime

The manga will still be going by this time in 2029, most likely.

Yeah because rushing the story towards its end worked out well for Naruto and Bleach.

Toei doesn't really decide that sort of thing. They don't own a whole lot of the actual shares for One Piece, and technically, its Fuji TV that arranges that sort of thing in alliance with other major shareholders like Shueshia.

I think I'm the only one not bothered by the flashbacks. I mean they ARE IN the manga! Not just the short summary in the chapters, but also in the volumes, 8 pages are dedicated to recapping these arcs, just like the anime does. Yes it slows it down and deflates some hype. But it is totally necessary for viewers who have either never seen these episodes, or have only seen them once when they originally aired. Imagine not seeing the Koby story since 1999. No one's 20 year memory is that good

That all being said, I would have preferred a random filler arc or Stampede tie-in, than slowing down Reverie. These flashbacks were going to happen either way, but there could have been less. Like we definitely didn't need 2 episodes of Marineford recap

Whether you like it or not, this is an anime that is hitting 20 years. Those of us on the forums who are watching this series who happen to be older and have been watching for years are in the minority and not even remotely under Toei's radar. Their marketing is the Japanese market, and even moreso they only care about continuing to draw in new fans from younger generations. Even when it comes to older Japanese fans their catering is minimal, only with the movies and specials. The flashbacks are annoying in some of the episodes and not bad in others, but the point is that people are going to complain about it and it's not going to change. They are there to prepare a new crowd for the Wano arc. In the most recent episode I'm even more convinced of that now, with them having recapped Fishman Island all the way through Whole Cake Island to cover Luffy's track record with Kaido and Big Mom.'

I suppose One Pace exists for those who like them, even though I don't like how they do things myself.

Oda really skimped out when it came to the Reverie arc. Without Luffy and his Waifu in the story, he gave up on it super quick.

What is in the Reverie arc very much involves the relationships between the Straw Hats and the various people who appear at the Reverie. As a result, since these all involve events that took place at least 50 episodes before, if not 800-something episodes before, obviously the studio felt that they should put reminders in here about what those connections are.

Granted, I would much rather an episode all about some of Koby's adventures during the 2-year time skip or what happened with Alabaster or Dressarosa after Luffy left, obviously the focus is entirely on how Luffy impacted these character's lives and thus we get flashbacks instead of proper side-stories like we should have gotten.

Besides-- the studio is obviously putting everything into preparing for Wano and thus having a smaller team doing clip shows while the majority working on what is meant to be the big event arc likely makes sense.

On the plus side, when Toei ruined Foxy it gave them enough time to make Water Seven amazing.

I think we're seeing something similar happen here.

Yeah, we definitely need to re-examine that period of the anime...

That is an incredibly ludicrous assumption to make when there are so many more sensible factors that could have played a role in that, such as Shueisha/SJW powers that be forcing his hand due to a lack of the main character. Originally it was stated the arc would be longer, so it's obvious the editors and higher ups were the reason behind that.
