Default RIP Those We Lost in 2018

Sadly, for several of my friends, family friends, and coworkers, January '18 was not a good month. There were cancer diagnoses, emergency hospitalizations, and, in the case of three different friends, deaths in the family, some of them taken far too early under tragic circumstances. Thinking about that got me to notice that we don't have a new one of these threads for 2018 yet to honor those who pass away this year, so here we are. Already copied over the 2018 deaths that were already reported in the 2017 thread to here; if I missed any, please let me know.

Actor David Ogden Stiers passed away today. He had a lengthy career in film and television and is probably best known in these parts for his roles as Cogsworth, Dr. Jumba Jookiba, and Mr. Maellard from Regular Show.

Ah damn, that sucks. His Simpsons cameo was great, but his Futurama cameo was my favorite.

Oh yeah, and contributions to science and all that.

    R.I.P. Stephen.

Also there are reports that writer Michael Fleisher passed back in early February. Fleisher wrote quite a few comics for DC back in the 1970s with the most memorable being his runs on Jonah Hex and The Spectre. The latter in particular since Fleisher went to great lengths to come up with some particularly brutal stories for the time period to the extent that DC wound up cancelling the series after a mere ten issues.

He's also known for suing the Comics Journal and writer/gadfly Harlan Ellison after the latter criticized him in an interview with that magazine; he eventually lost the case in what was a pretty solid victory for the First Amendment.

Stephen Hawking was amazing not just for his intelligence but strength of will. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis when he was 21 and doctors told him he had 2 years to live. Not only did he beat that, he's lived 5 decades longer than expected. Yes, it took his mobility and ability to speak but that still did not stop him.

Fun fact, Stephen was born on the 300th anniversary of the death of another famous mind that questioned the cosmos = Galileo.

Okay so not only was Stephen Hawking's birthday fell on the anniversary of the death of Galileo Galilei, but even the his death-day marks an anniversary for another brilliant mind in science= On March 14 1879 Albert Einstein was born .

    To clarify
    Stephen Hawking = Jan 8, 1942 - March 14, 2018
    Albert Einstein = March 14, 1879 - April 18, 1955
    Galileo Galilei = Feb. 15,1569 - Jan 8,1642

Before anyone asks, no Galileo didn't live to age 76 like Stephen and Einstein, he died at age 73. So close but not quite.
