What universe are you from where Yu Yu Hakusho isn't popular? It isn't as popular as DBZ (few anime are) but if someone is into anime at all they've generally watched it.

my point that it is better than dbz yet it isn't as nearly popular as it.

What a surprise, this really good series isn't as popular as literally the most popular anime ever in the west.
Yu yu Hakusho is was SUPER popular, but as Sakonosolo said, DBZ just outclasses... well basically every other anime show in the west in terms of popularity.
Is that because of quality? I doubt it. Is it because it was screened more? Also doubtful, if anything that's a consequence of it being so popular. My guess is DBZ just resonated way way more with teenagers than any other japanese show at the time, or since really, and that made it blow up the way it did. The only franchise that can maybe compete is Pokemon, and pokemania really only lasted a few years before its resurgence. Sure, Naruto, Bleach and One Piece had their time in the spotlight as well... but that's mostly derivative of DBZ's popularity, and anime's growing mainstream appeal. DBZ still proved more popular.

Since I had a whole free week, decided to catch up with some things, including some anime I wanted to watch for the longest time and for some reason didn't or never finished. I ended up doing much less than I wanted to, but anyways...

Finally got to finish Samurai Champloo. For like, 10 years, I've been trying to watch this anime but always for one reason or another I end up having to give up around the 5th episode. Now I finally downloaded the whole thing and watched it. One less issue to bound my soul when I die (btw, didn't enjoy the series as much as the first episodes always made me think I would).

And took the chance to start Utena, a series I was never really that curious about (except for the ones that aired when I was younger - Sailor Moon, Rayearth, Sakura), I don't think I ever watched classic shoujo) but always had this faint notion was pretty good. Aside from Utena and the other girl faces and the fact it would have lots of implied lesbianism, didn't knew anything about it.
Well, I just loved everything about the first arc (episodes 1-13), like every minute of every episode (although the lyrics of those duel songs...). Now I started the second arc and things suddenly are looking bad, like I just entered the real of Sailor Moon filler episodes (you just need one episode of "main character interacting with a character never mentioned before whose weak heart is used by the villain to turn them into the 'monster of the weak' until they are purified by being defeated" to know you'll be stuck with many episodes exactly like this for a while). I just hope this doesn't last for too long because I loved how the first arc was nothing like that.
EDIT: 26 episodes (2 thirds, since it has 39). God damn it, I'm in love with this anime.
EDIT2: Fuck that last episode! I cried for so long... But honestly, I don't remember how many years since I enjoyed an anime this much.

I just watched the whole of umaru chan season 1... and all that's available of season 2 in two sittings. I feel awful. But moe and happy. But awful. But kawaii imoutos. But awful. Ebina chan! awful. COLAAAAAAAA.

I feel like it's not the anime that's trash, but it's me whose trash for watching the whole thing.

If you enjoyed it, then what's the issue? All a series has to be is entertaining and Umaru certainly accomplished they going by your post.

Incidentally, Umaru is part of the current roster of series my local anime club watches. Others include:

Princess Principal: Schoolgirl spies in a streapunk England separated by a Berlin-esque wall

Inuyashiki: From the creator of Gantz. An old man is turned into a cyborg and helps people while a high school boy becomes a cyborg and goes full serial killer.

The Ancient Magus' Bride: A girl with magical power and lots of despair sells herself into slavery and I'd bought by a demonic looking figure who wants to nurture her power as his apprentice and, eventually, his wife.

Hozuki no Reitetsu: Hilarious hijinks in hell itself.

Princess Principal is probably my current favorite of this set.

I've been going on and off through some anime movies and short films:

The Night is Short, Walk on Girl: The sub finally came out! I was worried this would come off as Tatami Galaxy rehash, since it's an adaptation from the same author with Yuasa fronting the same team, and a lot of crossover between characters and character designs. I'm happy to say that it is still very much its own story! Less tightly-written than Tatami, and maybe could have been broken up into a short several episode OVA, it's filled with the surreal charm and animation that I know this author/animator pair is capable of. A very charming, cute, and strange movie that I definitely want to see again.

Night on the Galactic Railroad: Speaking of surreal, there's this. I heard of this through somebody making a comparison to Angel's Egg, and I can see why. It has that serene and unnerving feel in common with it, though the art is simpler and the narrative more coherent. I wasn't sure what to think at first, since it is incredibly slow-paced and the animation is mostly limited, but it's mezmerizing to watch. The eerie soundtrack (Haruomi Hosono!) in particular does a lot of work in selling the experience. This is a hard one to recommend, since i requires a lot of patience and a certain mood, but if you give it the time, you'll find something fascinating.

Neo Tokyo: This one's a collection of three smaller films into a group, all by great and respected anime directors (Rintaro, Kawajiri, Otomo). The stories themselves are a little meh. The first one isn't so much a story as a framing mechanism, the second is focused a little oddly, and the third is the most coherent, but ends abruptly. As you'd expect, though, the animation is superb. If you're a fan of animation itself, then you'll find a lot of value here. Lots of cool and even unique animation cuts are on display in these stories, with a surprising amount of western influence, even, in the first two. It's definitely a spectacle.

Roujin Z:Okay, this one wasn't the best film I've ever seen or anything, but damn if it wasn't a ride. Small in scope, it knows what it is: a strange movie about geriatric care, out of control robots and the intersection between them. Otomo and a young Satoshi Kon are both on this one, so it'd be weirder if the product was 'normal'. It's not a showcase of the best works of either, but their touches are present throughout. It's playful and fun, with a feeling sort of like some western 80s sci-fi/action cheese, and the ending made me laugh out loud.

Memories: More Otomo! This is a 3 episode OVA, all separate and distinct short films, and I'd only watched the first one so far. I started it with a friend and I'm waiting to finish the rest with her. The first episode, though, was incredible. Some really out there sci-fi/horror with consistently incredible animation, sound, and story. The full package! In 40 minutes, they build up intrigue, fear, and emotion like I don't see out of many things I'd label as 'horror'. I'm hoping the remaining two eps are just as good, but I would hugely recommend this to sci-fi fans out there, or people who just liked Otomo's work on Akira.

Magnetic Rose is one of my favorite OVAs ever. The real credit must go to director Koji Morimoto , however. Otomo did the composition, but the direction is all Morimoto (Satoshi Kon also worked on it!). Extra props to the amazing score by the one and only Yoko Kanno as well.
Just an overall incredible and exquisite watch.

My main qualm with Memories is that I feel the viewing order of the OVAs should be reversed. All three are good but Magnetic Rose is head and shoulders above the other two, and it'd be a much more powerful way to close the whole thing out

Thanks for noting the other names! That was Kanno on the soundtrack? Damn, I feel bad for missing that, haha. I hadn't heard Morimoto's name before, but I looked it up, and he did Noiseman Sound Insect? He also worked on Mind Game, too, apparently. There's a name I'll have to pay more attention to! Oh damn, it looks like Satoshi Kon did the screenplay for it, too, with a lot more of the surreal tricks he'd pull off in his own features. Yeah, that is going to be hard to beat, haha.

It's a shame that apparently the other two don't stand up nearly as well as Magnetic Rose, since that thing could be a feature by itself, it's so good. I'm still looking forward to seeing what's up with them, since they've got some great staff on them, too, though not nearly as solid as for the first one. I'll still reserve my judgement until after I'm done with the rest.

Morimoto's work on Macross Plus is also incredible if you haven't seen it, he directed the concert scenes (some of the best scenes in what's already my favorite OVA)

About to finish Cardcaptor Sakura. I completely missed that the first movie takes place at some point in the middle of the series so I'm probably going to skip it for now and watch the second movie next since it's a direct sequel. Kind of want to read the Clear Card manga too before the anime premiers next month.

Just watched Houseki no Kuni (Land of Lustrous) and it is really good! One of the rare cases the main character truly captivates me. I decided to watch it because I always hated CGI in anime and people were saying this one was a CGI anime finally made right (actually, it was this particular video I accidentally found)... and it truly is, the visuals are just astounding.
Now off to read the manga because this first season ended in a very interesting point and I can't wait until the second one is out.

    I recently made a fun discovery: Blend-S (See Opening here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x63osfb )

Maika Sakuranomiya wants to save money to one day study abroad. She's had problems however, due to a trait of hers that causes her eyes and expression to become scary looking, if not downright frightening, when she gets nervous. This has tanked several job interviews.

Then Maika comes across Cafe Stile, a cosplay cafe where the waitresses take on different character roles. One plays the Tsundere, another plays the Little Sister, and so on. Maika finds herself welcomed, offered a job, and cast in the role of Sadist.

This seems absurd to Maika, who is actually as sweet and kind as all get out. But between her expressions and a certain level of natural clumsiness on her part, she ends up being a natural sadist despite herself.

As an example, an episode features a contest for creating a food item, the most popular of which becomes added to the main menu. Maika's creation is a parfait, but her ineptitude with ingredients causes it to be a dessert that hits people with every taste sensation except sweetness. Because it's so in character for her "Sadist" role, it ends up winning, but doesn't get added to the menu because everyone's aware they can't actually inflict that on customers on a regular basis.

I watched the show recently too. It does such a great job at CGI. I like the main character (who reminds me a bit of myself in terms of her situation, not the obnoxious personality part lol). I feel the show stumbles during its earlier parts since it's trying to find its footing in setting up lore and abilities, but it goes in an a really interesting direction. It reminds me a lot of Steven Universe despite coming the manga coming before it.

The only solid demerit I can give the show is:

    Spoiler:
Phos turning emo in the second half of the season. I like the PTSD aspect and the gold malleability is interesting, although I don't necessarily like how the super speed disappeared so quickly (write that out of the show and nothing changes). But while I always wanted Phos to get character development from being naive, lazy, and whiny, I feel like it's a shame to completely skip their emotional transformation. Especially when the end result is so stoic and lacking any emotional traits. I know that the point is they have been disillusioned and is now competent in body and mind, but I feel like I'm going to really miss how much personality the old Phos had while the new one has very little of that aside from seeing a Christmas Ghost every now and then.

Also, as much as I like there being three races themed by different types of gems, the seashell people were hardly relevant aside from worldbuilding/foreshadowing.

    Spoiler:

Seen glimpses from the show and I'm really pleased with what they achieved. The manga has a very unique and artful style, so I was worried about how they'd adapt it but it turned out well above my expectations. Especially the hair. It's much better now that you can see the colors and shine.

I definitely agree. Although I feel as though the anime made the characters look a bit more feminine by giving everyone big hips and female voices. So the gems being a gender/androgynous tests my suspension of disbelief when all of the gems are so clearly defined by "feminine" traits instead of a mix. The fact they all have the same kind of faces doesn't help either. I'm so tempted to instinctually refer to all of them as females like the Gems in Steven Universe lol.

Been watching The Ancient Magus' Bride. It's a very calm and atmospheric show, but, at the same time, it's got a good share of emotional tearjerker moments. That said, I'm ten episodes in and...I guess I kinda wish they'd do more with the characters. They're getting a little dull for me. Still, a good show.
