    I.. Yeah.

tldr; He made sham elections last spring (can't remember exactly), he got impossible numbers, no one recognized those elections except them, and his "lawful" term ended yesterday, so under Our law there is no president.

I haven't been commenting on the situation is because I don't understand it.

Weird things are happening back home.

tldr; The legislative body speaker is under our law the current president of venezuela, but Maduro insist that the sham elections that were held last year are binding. The international community is sidding with the first law, finally.

Too soon to tell what is happening or what will happen.

Well Breexit doesn't look like it's getting any less stupid in retrospect.

Today it starts, and I hope it also succeds, the legislative body will declare Maduro illegitimate, as the election of last year's that was supposed to reelect him was a total and obvious sham. The supreme court that was also declared by an already voted out legislative body, so it is for all intents and purposes Illegitimate as well, now it's kind of uncharted territory, but things are going to be tense.

--- Update From New Post Merge ---

Venezuela has a new president, and a bunch of countries are recognizing him. Juan Guaidó.

Such critical moment, I am shaking right now.

Right now I'm like anxious and exhausted at the same time. Hopeful and terrified. I can do nothing, except insult leftist politicians of spain.

Let me write, again why this is not a coup.
The Venezuelan constitution, written in Chavez's first period, mind you, says that the president has to be sworn in front of the National Assembly, as in the legislative power.
The National Assembly does not recognize the elections held on spring of last year, as the conditions that they were made were deemed undemocratic, as opposition parties were dissolved, and only fringe members of the opposition participated breaking appart of it.
Aditionally, both the Electoral Council and the Supreme Court were named in the period between the elections of the current Assembly and it's takeover, a weird time to illegaly rush swearing in judges and the bastard councilwoman.
So Maduro got sworn in after a fraudulent elections, officiated by a illegitimate Electoral Council, infront of an Illegitimate Supreme Court where according to the constitution the president doesn't get sworn, The National Assembly as the last lawfully elected body of Venezuela flexed it's last muscle and denied Maduro his show, and as the constitution said, the speaker of the Assembly is the President in-transition, until the Rule of Law can be restablished.

Leave no space for doubt, Maduro is under the whole of the Venezuelan Constitution and Law an Usurper, who sits his bloathed ass on a throne of corpses, while the rest of the country suffers.

    The President is Guaidó.

    That's nice info right there.

I'm kind of impressed how Maduro hasn't arrested Guaidó yet.

Even if Maduro doesn't recognize that his time ended, he still has to recognize that Guaidó has the law branch, the National Assembly at his back, and the inmunities that it carries with it. Besides the international community is watching, they can't spin it like before as a terrorism charge, and rummors say that the military ranks aren't closing file behind maduro, meaning that they haven't accepted Guaidó as president, but haven't been explicit on their support for Maduro either.

Also USA placed Guaidó under their protection.

It all has become very creepy... ok, maybe it was always, but as someone who grew up in former Soviet Union and now lives in Germany I had quite hoped in my teens and some years after that we could overcome this ideological bs... so naive.
