It's hard to give a single reason for it, but i suppose that my best attempt at an answer involves the huge stigma that sort of thing has, the notably leftist slant on our major newspapers, a belief that any association, in text, in debate, in reporting or in person, with the enemy where you aren't slamming them harshly is tantamount to supporting them. And of course the fact that if word got out that you supported these parties got out, you'd more than likely be ruined, your higher work opportunities and most of your broader social ties would be cut right off, leading to pretty big shadow number of people who'd never admit to voting for them in public, who went to vote for them come election day.

But that may not be the case in Germany, i was just speculating there.

The majority of us tend of think of Ann Coulter as a joke anyway. As you can see, she makes statements that are even stupider than Bill O'Reilly or Sara Palin (although she has a contender in Michelle Bachman). Any credit she had has eroded over time exponentially.

Right now it's actually a boon for the Republicans to rush to the far right, because they're destroying themselves in the process really.
Aside from the civil war it's causing among them, the main thing is that they're making themselves less and less electable.
Essentially a scared stupid bunch of old white people are powering the extreme.
Except that demographic is dying, while the US is getting younger and browner all the time.

I wonder if their hearts will break when they discover there is no way left to gerrymander the districts to ensure they have the highest chance of winning.

I dunno, Sarah Palin's "water boarding is how we baptize terrorists" and "If your Rapist was a bird" comments were pretty vomit inducing.

The far right has inevitably lost the court battles against the gay rights movement, so instead they're doubling down on oppression of women's issues (contraception/abortion) and immigration, which will only increase outrage and make them lose further credibility.

    It's a repetitive circle of self-mutilation.

And rightly so. Don't think she didn't know what she was saying. She knows that the people who abhor it will abhor it and that the people who support it will support her. She just needs some way to stay in the limelight.

That sounds a little too rational for Sarah Palin's defense.

People with agendas aren't that stupid. They have misplaced beliefs, but they got their roles in politics because they know how to sway a crowd. Same with Fox News, they know how to drum up controversy and induce ratings. Some stuff she said was definitely not well thought out, but as long as people believed it, she still ran with it, death panels probably being the iconic phrase from her that probably was not well thought out but it hooked a lot of people, so people kept it going.

Allowing such gaffe and controversy drives the country insane though. It's not healthy.

Or a different result, as Zeph put it, changing the potential conservative candidates to be essentially unelectable because only the crazies would vote for them.

Thaaaaaaaats pretty much it. Germany, because of it past obviously, I would say tries very hard to be politically correct, both in its politics and in the media. I of course know that there are partys like the Npd who have their base of supporters, I just didn`t know those supporters were growing in numbers. Even in my hometown, a nationalist party got a fair number of votes. I`m not good with political terms in English, lol, but let`s say they had enough votes to get two seats in our city council. And I`ve got a few friends who also got elected for their parties, but who were just as shocked as I was that they had to work with these dickheads now and listen to their nationalist slogans. And from what I can tell, politicans everywhere in our country were pretty displeased with and surprised by these results, so it`s not just me

Well, since I`m not living in the U.S., I can`t really judge how much of an influence people like her still have. It`s easy to laugh at her if she is just a loony nobody cares about.

Just my two cents at this.
I personally donīt believe that Europe is getting more extremist, even with the increasing votes in the far right movements.
I do believe, however, that people from every country are starting to get fed up with every thing EU related.
The poor countries see the rich countries as abusive and controlling, and identify them with every single austerity measure that as been taken.
The rich countries see the poor countries as parasites that need constant babysitting and monetary aid. They are also getting sick of the successive immigrant waves that apparently only want free welfare money (England is a good example of this)

The centre parties still believe in the European project and are willing to fight and sacrifice things for it. This causes uproar in the residents of the rich countries/poor countries struck with austerity measures because no one sees any benefits of the EU.
The only parties that seem to want to distance themselves from this problems are the extremist ones, so they do their job and simply turn this nationalist/anti-EU feelings into their flag, and people vote for them without even paying attention to the other measures they propose.

So i donīt believe that these votes, or at least most of them represent that suddenly you have a bigger mass of anti-homossexual, xenophobe, death penalty thirsty, authoritarian, fundamentalism citizens.

People simply vote for the anti-EU projects because they feel like thatīs the root of their problems.

It's not really a poor-rich divide. Not wholly anyway.
Spain, Italy, Cyprus and Greece are not poor countries.
Now you DO have a point were you talking like Romania and Bulgaria though.

Youīre right, it was a poor choice of word.
And i also did not want to include Spain considering they did not elect any extremist/far-right party.

Neither did Cyprus or Italy (unless you count the Northern Italy supremacist shithead party).

--- Update From New Post Merge ---

Actually that's sort of interesting, that aside from Greece, this rise in far right extremist parties is among the richer more stable northern nations. Not the south.

Is this really true? It seems to me that the average age of a US citizen must be generally increasing since birth rates are declining while life expectancy is on the rise.

I know that immigration must have some sort of effect, too, but I can't imagine that it would actually bring the average age down that much.

Birth rates are not meaningfully declining in the US and Canada. Unlike Europe, and ESPECIALLY Japan, we have a steady stream of immigrants. And they most certainly do not have low birth rates.
That's one of the main reasons we're getting browner incidentally.

Yes now is precisely the time to be grateful we have a culture of integration and naturally shifting identity and are not Japan.

Hmm. Well, even if birth rates aren't really declining (currently), life expectancy is still on the rise, and we can expect the immigrants to live longer, too.

What about people leaving the country? Do they have any effect on the average age?

The disconnect betwenn what Sweden is marketed as, and what it really delivers is noticable.
