Well yeah, the report completely exonerates Wilson. It's basically the DOJ saying "Well shit, they did do it right the first time. Our bad"

Maybe this poor attempt at humor from a Ferguson official will lighten your mood.

And in the end people were absolutely right, duh, about the racial injustice and systematic racism permeating our police departments and our society. On top of the shooting that's what the protests were really about. It wasn't just Michael Brown's life matters. It was 'Black Lives Matter'.

"Gomez was captured just before President Enrique Peña Nieto's arrival this week to London to meet the royal family and top British political leaders, providing the Mexican administration a much-needed publicity boost."

Yeah, riddle me that. It happens really often when they need it for publicity.

Has anyone been to India before? Is anyone here from India? You know, I reaaally want to visit India one day with my wife but I am honestly afraid for her safety and well being. Someone please tell me this article is exaggerating.

It's basically saying millions of men in India are taught and brought up to believe, or at least see, the woman as not a victim of rape but the reason. Even with 1.2 billion people in the company millions is still a hell of a lot of people. Even with all the rape stories we've heard coming out of India I never thought it was...I knew it was a cultural problem, but I didn't know it was that bad. Please tell me this article is exaggerating.

This is basically due to lack of education, remnants of the old caste system bullshit and less importance towards countering rapes and sexual harassment. Oh and it's more than 1 million. Unfortunately, our government is dumb as a nut. We have 5 years jail term for consumption of beef but 3 years for sexual harassment. Our judicial system is a joke. If you remember the 2012 Delhi rape case, here's the BBC documentary. This is must watch.

Yup the lawyer is also a jackass.

Rape cases in India was always a big issue since the beginning. The main problem is that it takes years and years for the court cases to reach the final verdict. Hence, majority of convicted rapist are still untried. So after the 2012 Delhi rape, the Indian media has started to broadcast every single rape occurring in the country. Thus, you'll be hearing a lot of rape incidents in news.

Regarding your visit to India, you and your wife will have a very good time. I can assure you. You just need to know the do's and the don't. I am sure the people at your embassy will take care of that.

Edit - Aaaand the documentary has also been banned in India.

Thank you for your reply. The situation sounds very tough but fixable. Education, not just at schools but at home and local communities, being the #1 tool that needs to be utilized for the betterment of society. I'll definitely watch the documentary later tonight. If I can remember correctly it's the same name of documentary mentioned in the article I posted. I just didn't know it'd be out on Youtube so thanks for the link.

Also, I hope, and this probably the media's idea too, that the constant news coverage of rape cases in India will shame and change the sick parts of the culture into recognizing how truly horrible rape is and that victim blaming is not an acceptable thing.

The perception of women is due to the basic patriarchal society upon which the culture was built on. We are currently at the time where education and awareness amongst other things have seeped into the outdated views and cause a ruckus in between different generations with contrasting views. The stubbornness of cultural fundamentalists are being shown to the public with their shocking views on women as a whole (and of course, the global audience gets a piece of that too). We are in the midst of a cultural transition and acceptance amongst the people. Unfortunately, the government isn't helping with it either.

Coming to the article, the statement let out by the rapist was made public to provide awareness to the people that such scum exist and it is of course not the opinion of the general public. If it makes it sound any better, the traditional views held on women applies mostly to Indian women and not foreigners. It is perfectly safe to travel through the country as long as you don't mind occasional stares and the terrible traffic.

To summarize how pathetic our government is, these are the things they have banned over the past one month: Beef, insult comedy, 50 shades of grey and a documentary of the infamous Delhi rape. I won't be surprised if a Hindu version of the Sharia law comes into place very soon.

Thanks for your answer too. Yeah, I suspect education and awareness, as you say, will have a big influence on changing how young men are brought up in the future and affect how they think in a positive manner. Not just education of course but also how they're raised at home and many other factors/influences in their lives, but education is a big part of it. I'm glad to hear the rapists most extreme views are not shared by the general public. I felt the article was unfairly lumping his views with the whole of India's male population.

Though, I do recognize India is still a very patriarchal society and the general public's view on women in their own country still needs a lot of work. That's really a global problem, honestly, but from what I understand India has a bit of a longer way to go than others. Not everyone, but others. As you say, you're in a transitional period so that is great news. I hope the media continues to shine a bright light on these cases and your government. People like you, Leon, and many others like you two in India can educate and set an example for the younger generation in your country to a fairer and more understanding society.

I definitely will go to India one day. Without a doubt.

In India, 95% of the people are brought up with the notion to respect women starting from their mother (popular quote 'pehle maa' .. importance to mother) .. majority of the people in public standup for and are favorable to women if any dispute happens (example . a small road accident . etcc) ...

and also, these few cases of rape which are happening are caused by the extreme scum of the society who need to be cleaned up .. but still .. few political parties try to gain favorable situations with the community of the perpetrator (the CONgress government didn't allow the death sentence of the terrorists because it affects their muslim votebank .... even in the case of the nirbhaya rape incident .. the perpetrators were allowed to have a trail because they were part of the votebank .. the police officers were so fedup ... they hanged (lockup death) 3 of them while they were in custody because the CONgress govt are trying to drag this issue for their own benefit)

what i am observing for the past few years .. the articles written by foreign "news traders" are mostly about the communal clashes in India or any articles like the above ....

but in the past 2 years . what i have observed is.. whenever any sensitive issue comes up.. the newstraders in India are going to any lengths to scandalize it for their TRPs ... but i am not denying that these sensitive issues aren't happening ...

also, the politicians (especially the whole CONgress and the extreme elements of BJP .. who are in power) ... try to get any kind of benefit from these issues and try to sensationalize them ...

also, regarding your trip to India, you can have a safe trip (safe trip with about 80% chance of having bad experience) ... but if you want a real trip of India . please have an Indian friend who will give you the necessary cautions ...

Tourism in India is not taken seriously by the govt. .. therefore there aren't many websites which are helpful ... and frankly the people who do business at the tourist spots are shady guys who will seriously try to rip you off ....

This is why I asked for all of you guys input. People who actually live there or been there. What I'm getting from you all is that it's mostly a stubborn slow and unwilling government, lack of education, old cultural fundamentalists, and an outdated cultural system built on patriarchy. Believe me when I say I know the people of India are not a bunch of rapists or accomplices who are in agreement with rape mentality, but I can't dismiss the notion, enforced by what I'm reading from other users, that these types of crimes are a very serious problem in India...because of the caste system, the pervasive patriarchal culture, and deep seated mentality (even if you believe it to be minor) among many men in India and their views on women.

Again, this is a problem shared globally, no doubt, so I'm not trying to lay everything on India or anything. I'm just hearing so much about these rape cases from India I wanted some local insight as to why and how the issue is so big there in particular and your (all of you) are helping shape that picture. Informing me of a lot of stuff I didn't know and confirming some stuff I did.
