I'm still on the hooked for Trails train. Happy to hear that Cold Steel seems to be still good despite most of what I've seen, but from what I've heard the anime tropes are just a jumping point and the characters do drift of in more interesting directions.

It's actually interesting when you look at Falcom games you notice that they do kind of chase the hottest anime trends a bit while still doing their own thing.
From the early games being aesthetically strongly influenced by slayer to the newest moe blob style.
The characters do start off as tropes a bit, but you warm up to them over time. There is a anime style, but it actually has it's own charm and some of the areas you get to see look really gorgeous in the game. Falcom always does well with the style, and like many of their other games (Ys and Trails in the Sky), the music fits well and is music that is nice to listen to by itself.

I hope we get an announcement at some point that the other games will get localized, but hard to say what the chances of that are at the moment. Hope work isn't stressing you out too much, at least as stress free 16 hour work days can be.

Nearing the end of cold steel and fuck I'm regretting now getting the PSN version.
I think this forces me to wait for the EU release of Cold Steel II.... daaaaamn why couldn't I just get sen I+II as imports....
The power of instant gratification buy and start playing....

Game has been a blast after the usual slow start. Master quartz are a fun addition not sure how to feel about the removal of quartz lines unlocking spells. On one side it's nice to have more freedom. On the other hand it takes a bit out of the fun of finally getting that super quartz combination.
All in all it's nice though how multiple quartz lines balance melee/craft fighters now.

The platinum for this seems insanely time intensive. But at least I can work slowly towards it easily thanks to Vita sleep mode.

Finished Part 1 goddamn I swear these games have the most tormenting cliffhangers what the fuck....
At least I don't have to wait 3-4 years for the next part.

    -------------------------

    Aaaaaaaand Platinum!
Hope the release of CS II won't collide with Persona 5. Would be awesome if CS II comes out before I start my internship would be perfect to play that while I'm away from home.

Both FC and SC are on sale right now!

Double dipping on FC since I made the switch to PC with SC.
Anyone that likes an RPG with good characters get in on the series.

Like seriously I play a lot of RPGs and this series ranks among the top when it comes to characters(not that that's something hard given how shit anything else can be but you gotta appreciate that).

No exact date, but Trails of Cold Steel II is coming out this Fall.. Don't know when Persona 5 is expected to come here so let's see if it comes before or after. If it's around the same time then I might be out of commission for a while. As for the end of Cold Steel I

    Spoiler:
That was a crazier cliff hanger than Trails in the Sky. The fact we are introduced to a new combat mechanic which will be a large part of the second game was pretty cool. I liked how chaotic it ended, and because there was time to get to know Crow and like him I'm interested to know more about him, but also don't look forward to fighting him. Overall the cast was really good and Olivier having such a huge role and seeing results from him time in Liberl was great. Every scene he was in I loved.

The characters took a little more time to like compared to Sky, and one of my only big complaints was Gideon. He was introduced then we get a scene where we find out he died. He wasn't exactly developed, but the fact we spent time trying to stop him only to get that was disappointing.

    Also, Fie is best character.

    Spoiler:
Yeah ending was pretty crazy for me it's the bombshell drop that Misty is an Anguis and that Sharon is an Enforcer.
Like there is one scene with Sharon and Claire where I kind of got aware that Sharon might be Orobouros but I wasn't really sure.
There's still so many question unanswered, like as far as I understood it Rean's white hair mode has nothing to do with him being an Awakener and his contract with Valimar.

I liked the characters overall I'm kind of iffy on the bonding points system. I found the restrictions pretty arbitrary and the design around it resulting in stuff that's a bit too much fluff.

Would have preferred it if the events had more meat and if you weren't limited in how many you do. I mean there's a new game + option for you to have max events which is also stupidly expensive so that if you're a trophy hunter you won't even bother with that option until a third playthrough and at that point you've seen it all anyway.

Cold Steel is great where it plays to its strength, it's ok where it tries to copy from other popular titles.
Like the freedom that the Persona elements allow you also kind of clash with them subtlety pushing Alisa as the main romance.
Or the voice chats that remind you of Dragon Age/Mass Effect party chats are also only ok.
Same goes with the Highlands trying to be more open.

    Spoiler:
Yeah, the bonding was a bit hit and miss. Some stuff could be fun and interesting while others while funny didn't contribute a whole lot. Doesn't quite do Persona 4 where it develops characters even more. The problem comes with the fact that Rean is an actual character and not an avatar for the player, so when there is a canon romance it makes things strange. The fact that voices came and go in individual scenes was off putting as well. The Highlands was one of my favorite places because it was cool, but the fact that every mission showed you where to go made the game feel extra linear. At least the Phantom Thief mission didn't do it.

It didn't feel overall as solid as Sky FC, but this one was around twice the length for me compared to that, so the weaknesses had more of a chance to pop out.

My biggest issue with the highlands was that if you do everything in it it's backtracking the game.
And while riding was nice there just way too much empty space.

I actually played with voices off for one I wasn't into the English cast and yeah secondly the way they integrated them was a bit too uneven but I understand given their budget.

    Spoiler:
One of the small things I appreciated was the Crow reveal at that point it was pretty obvious so I liked that Millium just spelled it out without the game trying to make it into a super smart shocking twist.

Legram was my favorite place. For one I'm a sucker for the Swordsman lore in trails(Hope we get to meet Yun Kafai at some point) so meeting the Radiant Swordsmaster was nice. And the castle dungeons was totally my thing.

I'm also pretty sure we'll return to the castle given that door. Might have Valimar's weapon in it or something.

I'm still happy that you were able to slowly get a better understanding of the country like Trails in the Sky over each chapter and that worked out well in its favor.

    Spoiler:
While in Hindsight the clues were there, I actually didn't see the Crow thing until you were going around trying to find him, and found out he left for the capital. Then things were starting to turn for me. Even then I thought he was a part of it and didn't think about the fact he might've been the leader until it was actually said. I did speed through the game in a little over a week and a half, so I didn't have time to digest certain parts. I also was confused when the final dungeon started, because it felt out of place and it wasn't till that part where it felt like things were going to get smoothed out plot wise. Hell of a two hour or so epilogue though, which really makes me excited for the next game. When did you catch on to it?

I liked the romance overall with Estelle and Joshua in the Sky games, but the idea of Rean and his adopted sister just seemed tacked on. It's probably that we didn't get much time to know her so I can't get behind it, but it's almost the same with Alisa where it feels tacked on in some ways. It might just be that I'm not interested as much in those characters, where Estelle is one of my favorite video game characters so I was able to go along with it because I was so attached to her. Also didn't care for the forced drama between a number of characters in the first half of the game.

I really hope the other games come out at some point, mainly because I want to really get the world building from the other games, which this game seemed to reference the others. I was quite happy with the Sky references and seeing Bleublanc back.

    Spoiler:
I got suspicious during the mine splitup but Crow missing for the Chancellor speech confirmed it for me.
I think if they were to do away with the Persona elements and replaced it with good old trails narrative it would be better.

Olivier, Agate, etc didn't need those bonding events either and they were stronger characters for it.
I'm totally fine if they want to push Alisa as the main romance but they should just focus on that then instead of being so carefully wishy washy because player choice.

Also yeah forced drama was really weird. The strangest one was Fie and Laura to the point where I wondered where did that suddenly come from?

Definitely think overall that I strongly prefer the Sky duology right now but it's not quite fair since CS II isn't out yet.

There's a lot of stuff I actually missed in Cold steel I just read somewhere that Anton shows up at the school festival again. I only met him during an escort mission.

Now I feel stupid, since I didn't realize that Sky third chapter was announced in the same article (I thought they meant the third Steel game). Now I'm really hyped and happy that all these games are coming out in quick succession. Xseed is one of my favorite publishers now between these games and Ys (Which no news about the new game coming to the states). One thing I'm interested to learn about the localization is a certain backstory development for a character (Spoilers for Trails SC and Third Chapter).

    Spoiler:
We get backstory on Rinne and what she was put through before joining Ouroboros. Apparently there is a scene which is her getting raped by someone. With the visuals you can't get anything explicit visual wise, but rape in games can get quite iffy with games. I believe XSeed said if they did the third game there would be some heavy editing with certain parts, so that would probably be one of them. Either way I'm excited to get the full trilogy.

Trails in the Sky FC and SC are on sale again on GoG.
Again strongly recommended to anyone that likes JRPGs.
Over the years Trails and Persona are the two series that truly stuck with me(doesn't mean that I haven't enjoyed other games), they just handle their characters/story well. The arcs characters go through in both are just genuine.

You and me both. I've had fun and enjoyed other games, but Trails has kept an impression on me and I'm already getting an itch to replay the games again. Trails in the Sky especially has great characters, from Olivier and Kloe to the best protagonist Estelle. Despite the way the game looks, the way the game was designed around the limitations give the characters unique appearances and manages to make their movements expressive. I'm so happy that the third sky game will be coming out, and I hope that the other ones will be released eventually.

A little off topic but because there is no specific thread I want to mention it here. Falcom, who made the Trails games, has another series called Ys which you can get a number of games on steam or GOG. I would highly recommend those as well, because the battle system is good and awesome music. Story and characters aren't exactly strong, but are good enough.

Only played Felghana so far(long ass time ago), combat was fun but I felt like I would have loved more rewarding exploration(maybe I remember it wrong but I don't think I felt impressed by the levels).
One of these days, another AP member will buy this on our recommendation and post here :P and then I'll retire in good conscience xD.

The Ys series has very little exploring. The best it gets is Celceta which is a Vita exclusive and at most you get certain items as you increase the percentage of the map you explore. Some of the games don't have the best of level design, but I feel it's more I & II that lacked good design. From what I remember Ark of Naphistim, Seven, and Celceta had pretty good designs overall. The new one looks like there might be more emphasis on exploring, but no signs of a release date outside of Japan. In any case, I keep playing the games because the music always sucks me in, the combat is fun, and the story is serviceable enough. I feel that Seven had the best story and I got a bit emotional with a certain part, but because it was a PSP game I don't think many played it, which hit harder for a very niche game already.

What I wouldn't give to have a few members play the Trails games. I love them and would love to discuss them with more people, because talking about it with one other person doesn't really go anywhere that much. I thought Robby was going to get around to it, but his life probably got busy so it didn't happen.

For some reason while doing some work and listening to random stuff on youtube it jumped to Ys 7 ost stuff. Have currently listened to about 4 pieces and dunno if it's just me being the right mood but it's pretty fantastic. I can see how it sets the tone for anything from action to emotional stuff.

Darn having to pay for rent and food and moving and having a girlfriend and cooking and doing dishes and visiting this stupid website about rubber pirates!

Yeah, I want to play them, they're sitting n my steam account, but I just haven't touched them. Or Suikoden 1 and 2, or Xenoblade, or Witcher 3, or Fire Emblem Fates, or Persona 4, or the YS games... I haven't even gotten around to To The Moon and that's only like 3 hours long. I have 500 or 600 hours of rpgs to clunk through, and that's just stuff on the "I really wanna play it" list. Toss in experiences I want to share with my girlfriend like replaying Okami or Final Fantasy 9 or watching movies...

I wanna play them all but I'm mostly finding time for games I can sit down and do in 20 minute chunks. Play a match or two, then call it a day and move on. RPGS are harder than it used to be, because you get in the mindset where you just want to sit down and play it for 4 or 5 hours in a sitting, and be able to commit to that every night for basically a couple weeks straight. ANd that's just harder than it used to be.

Which ones have you listened to? For me Seven has the best ones of all the games as well. The others have a few good ones here and there but I can pretty much listen to the whole soundtrack and like all of them. Crossing Rage is one I like to listen to when working out and to just get pumped out, and the opening song Innocent Primeval Breaker is great as well.

Currently listening from a list(some Ys 7 ost list) and am on track 7 Vacant Interference, really great stuff so far.

Yeah, RPGs are quite hard to find time for when you only have so much time to dedicate to something. Perhaps cutting out this website will help you with a little bit of time, and sanity as well

Hope you can get To The Moon at some point. Love that game and really gets to me on so many levels.

I think I see what list you are on. I think you'll really like Desert of Despair. Smashing through the Mountain Path is another one I like as well. Some of my favorite ones are way later on the list though. I'd be interested to know your favorites once you get through.
