You can go the CP9 route and power up the opponents and spend time with them to develop their characters for epic one-on-one battles or you can brush over them as above average fodder like with the Zombie Generals. If you try to go in between like Oda is doing in this arc you get a mess of enemies that we spend time with and develop (poorly but still) that end as useless characters that are used as fodder making all those chapters spent on or about them meaningless.
Except it was required to develop these characters, in order to understand the weight of history for those fishmen. The purpose is not to develop extra strong characters just to give the SH some good fights, the purpose is to tell a story and have the SH write their own inside of it.
It doesn't matter *who* they fight, it matters *why* they fight.

I liked this chapter, it was pretty fun.
    Chopper looks teenager-y? Cool!
The mecha-Sunny was pretty widely predicted. Not sure how I feel about it, but for what it's worth I like the design.

If Chopper learned to control his Monster Point I don't see him in the weakling trio. I don't get his being in the weakling trio in the first place actually.
When he first joined he was literally a scared child but he has been through a lot. He should have use his potential.

Annnd ... it looks like we've got confirmation via this chapter cover that Wapol's evil empire is not located on Drum Island (or if it is, that Dalton and his Lapan peace-keepers are keeping it from expanding into the boundaries of town. Things look pretty good there, so it's probably safe to assume that (the true) Drum is safe.

About Surume's brothers: now I'm wondering if the 3 shadow squid seen in the Florian Triangle mist were related, too. If Chopper's human point looks completely human now (as some folks are guessing, since Oda chose deliberately not to show it), then I could also see that becoming the thing that gets him a higher bounty later on, because if the WG saw Chopper fighting with the SH in human form, they'd probably be less likely to think of him as a "pet" and more as a "crewmate."

Nami's new weapon is great. Sort of like a weather-based pea-shooter. It's good because it's compact and seems to work instantly. The Climatact, if I'm remembering correctly, always had to have a bit of warm-up time and fussing with. So this new one makes her able to do close-up, immediate fighting in tight spaces.

    And Franky. Wow.
Oda is really making up for putting Franky largely on autopilot just before the time-skip.

I'm glad that the drunk octopus is being ignored, actually, because this is turning into a fodder battle, and I don't want him to be fodder. Look at it this way: the more he's withheld from this kind of chapter, the more likely it is that he'll feature in a multiple-chapter spotlight-fight with a single SH.

    Not Brooke, but Zoro.
    Sorry.
Makes my spine tingle just anticipating it. Take all the time you need Oda!

Why couldn't have he have made it out of normal metal, or does it power itself or change easily. Also it makes me wonder whether Wapol has had anything to do wit the Pacifistas. But i could just be reading way too much into the Wap part of wapometal.

Re-reading Wapol's cover-story from a few years ago should answer most of your questions, but basically, Wapol sold toys with a particularly durable metal that he invented, and the toys were noticed by a scientist who was amazed by the metal. Word got around quickly, and soon Wapol became a quadzillionaire (with trophy wife) from it. One theory circulating now is that the WG gave Wapol an island to rule as a way of gaining access to huge amounts of Wapolmetal. So it's very likely that Wapolmetal is the metal of choice for the latest version of Pacifista, and that's what it was specifically acquired for. So yes, giant robot fights are go!

    Well said!

EDIT: Whoops -- looks like I was wrong about the size of Nami's weapon. Since Oda drew it with a lot of foreshortening, it seemed smaller than it actually probably is. The first picture shows it to be the same size as the old climatact, while the others make it appear to be smaller, but it probably isn't.

I sympathize with the sentiment that if this is all there is to the NFP, Oda really botched it in spending the amount of time he did on building them up. Having almost two whole chapters of reintroductions and hints of abilities was bearable because you expected it to mean that they are still somewhat important characters. Otherwise it was a huge waste spending that time on it. Don't think anyone is asking for BW-esque or even AP-esque fights but a lot more than them being one-shotted almost in passing.

However I'd sooner conclude that there is more to them than getting one-paneled on the sidelines. Keep in mind they are on dry ground and not using any ES. Fishmen are at their best underwater and we are on Fishman Island, with many submerged areas and the ocean floor right outside of it. In addition, everything going down nice-and-neat in the Plaza, everyone conveniently gathered up, is way too un-OP like. I expect something to throw the island into chaos - looking like Noah's arrival - and the NFP escape, regroup and power-up and later will meet the SHs again in environments more to their favor and buffed up with ES from the start. That still won't be enough to give them high difficulty battles, which is all for the better, but it should let them go beyond casual one-paneling as their build-up demands.

On the page before, he says that there is a separate form he can change into that requires his rumble ball. So, he says his OTHER 6, so Horn is 1, since he is in his Horn Point, then his other 6 that he can use whenever he wishes. Then the is the 1 that he needs to use the Rumble Ball. 1 +6 + 1 = 8. This make 8 in total
I'm not entirely sure about this. If we look at the dialogue:

"In these 2 years I completely renewed and reinforced the 7 transformation points! I only need the "Rumble Ball" for one transformation! I'm able to freely change into the other 6 whenever I want!"

It looks more to me like he is indeed saying that he needs the RB for one of those seven rather than for an eighth point. I think it might be something like this:

    - Horn Point --> Horn Point, but with strengthened arms from Arm Point (and perhaps legs from JP too)
    - Brain Point --> Brain Point
    - Walking Point --> Walking Point
    - Guard Point --> Guard Point (much bigger)
    - Arm Point --> (Kung Fu Point) or Arm Point or ?
    - Jumping Point --> (Kung Fu Point) or Arm Point or ?
    - Heavy Point --> melded somehow with the monster form, overall physically top form, requires RB - and the RB also empowers each of the other points. May still be called HP or have a new name, I'd like the latter.

Okay, I gotta say that at first, I wasn't too impressed by this chapter. Plus the annoying downtime of APforums; but I guess that's normal and happens from time to time. Cover was decent, but nothing special. Then came the whole Franky-robot docking part, which I am not a big fan of, and it wasn't very spectacular.
Daruma's facefault on the other hand was much more enjoyable.

However, we got a very interesting revelation from this - Wapometal. Again. I like how this ties together. Now I wonder if in the Anime, they will finally realise that Wapol's coverstory would be a good thing to show before coming to this part, and that Enel's story, too, for example, might be important later on. Overall, the Iron Pirate "Franky Shogun" was kind of boring.
Then, it got better though: Nami freakin' blocking a sword slash with her clima tact, and that awesome attack of hers made up for the stuff before. Usopp's Bamboo Javelin was damn awesome, too.

I'm a bit confused over Chopper's powers though. I remember someone suggesting he could dig with this form, which we have already seen on the one colour spread a few chapters back, so props for that. However, it seems they're not new forms, but instead alterations of his old ones - did I get that right? In that case, I am disappointed. Chopper's old Horn Point looked so much more badass than this cute-ish thing with giant horns and "misproportioned" body/face in comparison. Does that mean "Kung Fu point" is the new Arm Point? I'm not really following this explanation anymore. Or was it a mistranslation, which would explain it.... If NOT though, then the only 2 forms missing are Jumping Point and Human Point - curious to see those. But again, if it's really how it was stated here, then I'm pretty disappointed with his development... *sigh*

The one nice touch we got from Chopper though, which really made me smile, was that he called himself a "monster", which means he's not ashamed anymore of how people saw him in the past - instead, he has gained confidence and is proud of what he is and what he has become. That is one real great character development right there, I tell ya.

The stuff about Surume having siblings is interesting - Florian Triangle and those monster arms, anyone? It's at least a possibility to consider.

And then - holy fuck - the greatest page so far for me. From this entire arc, definitely, and I don't know how many can be considered more epic than this one. You all know which I am talking about, of course:

    Spoiler:

    [/

That's right. Luffy just casually proceeding forward, those two Fishman jumping on him, but he's not even bothered in the slightest bit - and Zoro and Sanji come out of nowhere and OHKO these guys, with basic attacks. Notice how there's no Diable Jambe on Sanji kicking? I remember at least Ryuk, Coruscation and myself being bothered by the non-stop big-name attacks being thrown out there like it was Christmas. Although there's still the possibility he used it and one just cannot see it as well, but nevertheless, it looks like he didn't - and it was a named villain. Plus, Luffy doesn't use Gear 2 against Hody when kicking his teeth out. Finally.

This totally kills every possibility of those guys being a serious threat, of Hody being a threat, of the whole lot of the NFP being a threat. Also, it leaves exactly 2 out of the group left to fight (excluding Hody) - Hyouzo for Zoro, and Zeo for Sanji. However, I don't think that's even necessary - there WILL be an extension to this arc, with this chapter there is just no fucking way that those guys are the big baddies. It just doesn't happen that way. Ever. It's a Shonen. Juvar out.

    Thanks for reading.

To put aside Franky's awesomeness for a while, it looks like we have our first match-ups.

    Chopper vs Daruma
    Zoro vs Dosun
    Sanji vs Ikaros

Choppers fight was pretty expected, but if these truly are the match-ups I'm surprised that Zoro wont be fighting Hyozou. Hopefully Brook'll fight him instead.

It's really interesting that Oda had the whole "Wapo steel" thing planned from so many years ago.. http://www.mangareader.net/103-2363-...apter-256.html a reminder, this is the chapter where it was first revealed (256)!

I don't understand why people are whining so much about NFP char development, after all isn't that the way it was in the beginning of the story? The only threats were Krieg and then Crocodile, the rest was basically fodderish just like the NFP are now, even though they got character development as well.

EDIT: Also, I don't think there will be new Pacifistas with 'transformer-like' abilities like Franky. Remember when Zoro cut a Pacifista the first time? He said it was harder than steel, in other words, the Pacifistas probably already had wapo steel in them to begin with. What Franky did was to REALIZE Vegapunks FORMER dream, of creating a transformer-like robot. It would really make Frankys achievement less of a big deal if he wasn't the first to create it. There's a possibility that there might be other robots like frankys later in the stories, but for now, I'm pretty sure Franky is the only one who has utilized the Wapo steel in such a way.

Just gotta say its such a great thing to see the Strawhats just being awesome. After all the struggling and losses in Thriller Bark/Sabaondy/all of the Whitebeard War arc it's very satisfying. However none of the villain characters still aren't very interesting. That's the one big annoying thing about this arc for me. I suppose that will be fixed with their fights.. I hope.
