    Default General Music Thread

I do not know why we never made one of these, but now is as good as a time as any.

First of all, to differentiate this from the specific genre threads, this is a thread to discuss the general of music. What are your favorite albums? Bands? Albums? What bands have you discovered recently? What type of music is really hitting your current mood?

To kick things off, I think I'll just requote my favorite album list here:

    My top three are:

    1. Frank Zappa - We're Only in it for the Money*
    2. The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee*
    3. Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime*

    Other non-ordered favorites:

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation* (this is rivaling the Minutemen at the moment for that spot)
    Neu! - Neu!*
    Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow*
Whipping Boy - Submarine* (I only discovered this one about a couple weeks ago and it's climbed up fast)
Andrew W.K. - Close Calls with Brick Walls*
    Red House Painters - Rollercoaster*
    Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs*
    Atheist - Unquestionable Presence*
    Repulsion - Horrified*
    Sleep - Holy Mountain*
    Melvins - Houdini*
De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising*
    Xiu Xiu - Knife Play*
Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood*
Hammers of Misfortune - The August Engine*
    My Bloody Valentine - Loveless*
Gospeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven**
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley*
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch!*
    Miles Davis - Bitches Brew*
    Fugazi - Repeater*
    Flipper - Generic*
    Amebix - Monolith*
Cap'n Jazz - Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over*
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters*
    Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade*
    Wipers - Is This Real?*

I could go on for a while listing favorites. Not a lot of my favorites are actually too far down, but that's just how it is. There's a point where bands/albums are well known because they are really that fantastic. That isn't to say that only well known bands can be great, but a lot of those albums left a much larger impression on me then some of my obscure niche dabblings. If I named every album that I loved, then we might be here for a while...
To be fair, the non-ordered contains a lot of more "in the moment" albums. There are many more that probably slipped my mind due to my current mood as well, but it is what it is.

    Edit: Now with samples!

I like those singers too! Used to listen to loads of ABBA, don't listen as much anymore really. But yeah Queen are brilliant.

Recently been listening to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' loads - my favourite Queen Songs are 'I Want to Break Free' by Mercury, 'Don't Stop Me Now,' their Colab on 'Pressure' with David Bowie. David Bowie - hmm my favourite would have to be 'Life on Mars,' then there's 'Ashes to Ashes' or 'The Jean Genie'.

My favourite Michael Jackson songs would have to be 'Can You Feel it' with the Jackson 5, 'You Are Not Alone,' 'They Don't Really Care About Us,' 'Smooth Criminal' etc, - And for Journey, one of my fav ever songs is 'Don't Stop Believin' ' - and I like 'Anyway you want it'

And for Manilow - 'Mandy', and 'Can't Smile Without You.'

Gotta admit that piece you presented me was pretty ballin' Wagomu. I haven't really delved into the world of prog rock yet, but now I'm even more convinced that perhaps I should start.

I always find it odd how few people listen to 70s prog rock nowadays. Here's a few basic/essential albums you should listen to:

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
    Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant

And that is some good Bowie. What's near-blasphemous is that I actually don't have Bowie on my computer. I used to have some, but it got lost amongst some computer memory transfers.

70's prog is my favorite :D I like a variety of music though, ranging from classic 60's-70's rock, miscellaneous 80's, 90's, even some ska from my high school days, classical, and folk.

I've never heard of Caravan, what do they sound like?

My current top bands in no particular, but sort of order:

    Yes
    Marillion
    Porcupine Tree
    Beatles
    Frank Zappa
    Chicago
    Pink Floyd
    Moody Blues

And I'm also very fond of:

    Led Zeppelin
    Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
    Aqualung
    Vince DiCola
    Dave Matthews Band
    Deadwood Forest
    Blind Melon
    Bob Dylan
    Devo
    Duran Duran
    Aquabats
    Atomic Opera
    Joni Mitchell

And a lot of other stuff...

Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible. - Frank Zappa

    Bwahahahaha

Kidding aside, I'm really starting to like K'naan more and more. Started off with T.I.A on VH1. Then ofc his popularity in India grew with Waving Flag WC Version. Really liking his "Troubadour" album.

Are there any other fans of Japanese rock and visual kei here? I listen to a lot of stuff, but if you want to define me as a "fan of a certain genre", then it's j-rock. Lists are always fun to come up with, so here are some of my favourite Japanese bands. The ones in bold are very special to me.

    Dir en Grey
    the GazettE
    BUCK-TICK
    MUCC
    Girugamesh
    D
    Deluhi
    D'espairsRay
    Exist†trace
    Funkist
    Kaggra,
    kannivalism
    Kei
    Maximum the Hormone
    Miyavi
    ONE OK ROCK
    Rip Slyme
    Plastic Tree
    Nightmare
    ScReW
    SID
    SUGIZO
    Suga Shikao
    Versailles

My favourite artist of all time though is Akira Yamaoka, a video game composer. His greatest achievement IMO is the music and sound designs for the Silent Hill-series. He is my personal godworthy genious. I find ambient/dark ambient in general extremely fascinating and enjoyable, so if anyone has any suggestions to make regarding ambient I'd be very happy to hear about them.

Those are not the only type of music I listen to, however. Absolute genre faithfulness is a bit silly to me: I like to think that there are no specific genres better than others, there's only good music. If I find something worth listening, I don't care what defines it. To be fair though I still wouldn't touch Miley Cyrus with a ten-metre stick...

They're one of the Canterbury bands (along with Camel, Hatfield and the North, Gong, Soft Machine and quite a few other awesome prog bands). This may be redundant, but Caravan sounds really British.

Seriously though. Elton John, Billy Joel, Meatloaf, Reel Big Fish, Bowling for Soup, Queen, Journey, Beatles, Trans Siberian Orchestra, and soundtracks (both instrumental and disney and Animaniacs like and game) tend to top out my list, though naturally there's dozens-hundreds of others.

Frankly, David Bowie's always struck me as really boring.

Low is okay, but Ziggy Stardust is so unbearably mundane that I can never make it all the way through.

He's done a few worthwhile things with Eno, but he's never really struck me as the musical god that people make him out to be.

Also, I'd be willing to drop my last.fm/RYM should others do the same.

David Bowie is fun and nostalgic for me. A lot of it may be mundane, but it's still nice, catchy and well-written.

I just started my RYM recently. No reviews/ratings yet, but a good portion of my library is up there. I think I said this in the punk thread, but don't be surprised if there are huge gaps in a lot of classic bands' discographies. I've lost a lot of it over the years and my spending tends to go toward the rarer things I can find, have downloaded and need to buy. I still have some vinyl I need to go through, some CDs and records on my computer that didn't show up on my initial searches:

    http://rateyourmusic.com/~Zappagoat

Here's my last.fm, though my listening on it's been down for a while due to an increase in iPod and vinyl listening (also, excuse the stupid name, haha):
