It is overrated, it is not bad, it is fun untill the end of the kyoto arc, then the flashback. It's worth the read I think.

    sure..sure..sure..
    OVAs are fantastic too....

it's drawback is,it peaked to climax too quickly for a successful shounen...also it's last arc plot should have come beforehand and penultimate one should have been the last..
materials were all very good..only mistake was ordering...

Ruroken was pretty great, but looks bloody immaculate compared to Nobuhiro's recent remake. Bit rough round the edges early on, but by around... ooh... volume 6? Yeah let's say there... By volume 6 it's more than solid.

And oh!! Rurouni Kenshin is really good by the way. Its not that good but its epic nontheless. If you are a fan of samurais mixed in with a lil bit of supernatural ish then go ahead. I recommend reading the manga or watching the anime first, then you hit the OVAs and finally if you like you can read the recent rurouni kenshin restoration manga. The live action movie is really good too, lots of fighting scenes really recommend the series! 8/10 in my book!

If its one of your first ever exposures to either shonen, or the samurai genre, its decent enough. The main character at least is pretty iconically known, but it sort of runs along the lines of Inu Yasha. Wacky cast and romance story with over the top villains sort of... it's a mixed bag. Its okay, and it WAS one of the more successful series when it was coming out.

But if you've read anything in either of those genres, its only okay, at best.

And if you've read any seinin samurai mangas (Vagabond, Lone Wolf and Cub, etc.) don't even bother.

    @Robby,

it is one of the top 10 highest selling mangas ever from Shueisha's stable...it was on top in the yearly sells list in 1995-96...so calling it "one of the more successful series when it was coming out" is a understatement.....

isn't that RK failed to make WSJ no.1 again as a magazine?

Lol that's exactly what Robby's saying, so it's not an understatement. It was fairly successful back when it came out, filling the gap after Yu Yu Hakusho completed and One Piece began to rise, but its success was relatively short term, especially in comparison to others of its time like Detective Conan and GTO (like in that Togashi Manhwa)

Now, I have fond memories of Rurouni Kenshin, and it's fun to look back at it. But having read a bunch of other series since then, I easily admit that there are far better written stories in these magazines that have been published before and after its tenure.

    Still fun though.

EDIT: Oh and the first movie was fantastic by the way.
Dare I say, the best manga-to-film adaptation of any shounen manga ever.

Where did you found that information? The yearly sales of 1995-96? and is there other years?

What do you mean for on top? That it was the number 1? or in the Top 10/5/3?
I don't believe that in 1995 it surpassed Slam Dunk. Slam Dunk ended middle 1996 so is possible that Rurouni Kenshin surpassed it than.

It endured until 1998 with Rurouni Kenshin as the magazine Ace!
Rurouni Kenshin lived 4 years wit the magazine as #1 and 2 years wit the magazine as #2. Of those 4 years as #1, 1.5 years were alone, without the big hitters Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk.

you are perhaps correct..i may got the year wrong..but i remember seeing a list of WSJ no.1(in a video) and it indeed peaked..
