They're playing here tomorrow. I wanted to see it, but I opted to go for Sunn O))) the weekend before and I've got a ton of shows in the november-december range. I did get really hooked on Fear Of A Blank Planet recently, though.

Same here! Funny because when it originally came out I wasn't all that into it. I think seeing some of the songs live put a new spark in it (I missed the FOABP tour).

Anyone seen any good prog shows lately?

Sadly, no. I don't know of anything coming around CA.

Close to the Edge, Fragile, and In the Court of the Crimson King. It's all you really need.

Well, my last concert was Cynic, which was pretty awesome, though the next few I have lined up aren't quite as proggy.

Have you heard Jethro Tull's A PASSION PLAY? It's like THICK AS A BRICK except a lot more experimental. It even has sax in it!

Everything can be improved by a little sax and violins.

Ugh, do people still listen to Troy? Those kids are from my neck of the woods - saw them live a bunch when they were starting out, back when my band was still playing. Once they got signed they fucking sold their souls, sadly. Use to be so good, too.

    My latest prog idol:

Probably because I'm so reminded of Frank Zappa.

I've only got their first 2 albums. Sort of hit and miss, tbh. Only really digging a handful of their songs. If they got worse after Doppelganger then I'll probably not bother getting the rest of their albums...

I think they're broken up now, anyway.

This thread reminds me that I should listen to my Jethro Tull collection more often.

    Buff, where do I start?

Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick has been playing repeatedly on my i-pod lately. Great stuff!

Gentle Giant's Free Hand is a must. Then there's Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon. Classics.

In the Court of the Crimson King is quite there too, and I have a weakness for Camel's Mirage and Moonmadness albums.
And if we consider Kansas as proggy, then add them.
Moving onto more modern stuff, I'm a huge fan of Porcupine Tree (saw them at Manchester last year), Beardfish (probably the best PURE progressive rock band right now), Opeth, The Mars Volta, Pain of Salvation, Bigelf and yes, also Dream Theater.

And, even though they're arguably non-proggers, japanese instrumental-rock band Toe are AWESOME.

And finaly, The Fall of Troy's Doppelganger is a VERY good album. Then, their stuff ranges from acceptable (some Manipulator and Phantom on the Horizon songs) to mediocre (last album entirely, and the rest of the Manipulator and Phantom albums.) BTBAM have sme songs that are awesome, like their last album's last song Swim to the Moon.

They've already been mentioned, but I must confirm: Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, Yes's Closer to the Edge and In the Court of the Crimson King are really all you need.

Prog cred points for Gentle Giant and Camel.

I would include your Beardfish mention, but your comment is wrong by reasoning of The Tangent, Pineapple Thief and The Flower Kings.

I would like to add a little Spock's Beard to the honorable mention list.
