Default My Laptop may be infected...eh?!

OK, here's the bare bones situation (Yohohoho!)

My laptop has been acting very strange lately. Some of its symptoms include:

-Very slow to ridiculously slow load times for ANYTHING.

-Random "popup" sounds and "error" sounds when there's nothing on the screen (there was even once where music played in loops)

    - My favorites have been alphabetized, and won't go back to the custom order I had them in.

    - A japanese popup keeps appearing infrequently.

I didn''t think anything of it at first, but the problem kept persisting even AFTER:

    - I deleted my cookies, history, and Temp. Internet files (couldn't even get th Temp folder open at first)
    - running Spybot and finding nothing but a "command service" that I can't fix, even with a restart
    - Emptying my recycle bin and deleting files I recently downloaded.

So now I'm at my wits end. I don't want to drive to Best Buy or some place to let the Geek Squad look at it, so could someone give me any advice on what I may have missed, or what I should do?

I'm gonna assume that you ran a complete virus check.

With Spybot, yeah. Everything I see in the scans are just nothing little ad popups, but that apparently isn't the problem. Other than that, I don't have any other Spyware tracking software.

OH! And a new symptom just presented itself:

    - When I went to shut off the computer, as it was bringing the screen down, a web page I wasn't on flashed by before the screen did the whole "Windows is shutting down". Is something sending me to websites and simultaneously hiding them from view?

thats weird. If your operating space starts geting SMALLER after deletes,or doesnt allow you to run programes cause of "lack of space" even if you have litle to NOTHING on realy, you will probably have a HUGE problem-cause THEN even a defragmentation wont EVER finish, but will just keep restarting itself (take it from a guy whose been driven mad by EVERY SINGLE computer hes EVER HAD-you just CANT WIN.)

    Try these:

    go to Start -> Run

Type CMD, Hit Enter or OK

    In the Command Prompt, type:

    1. Ipconfig /flushdns

    2. Hit Enter. That Clears the Cache.

    3. Type Netsh Winsock reset Catalog

    4. Hit Enter. It'll ask you to reboot. Do so.

    5. When it loads back into windows, hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete, go to task manager.

    6. Go to the processes tab. Look for anything that talks about ads or anything of that nature.

    7. End those processes, run the Spyware scan again.

    That should do it.
I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

OK, here's the end result of your advice, "Fire Fist" Ace:

See anything out of the ordinary? I dunno...

Also, the Spybot picked up something I haven't seen before, "Microsoft Windows Hostchanger" or something along those lines. I've deleted it, so we'll see if that was the main problem.

EDIT: Still hearing random "popup" SFX with nothing on the screen; getting a little worried again.

Yes, I do. It's just that it's been going off at irregular times. Usually popups occur when I visit a new webpage, but it's been right in the middle of me working on pages that haven't given me popups before. Like right now for Instance - I was typing the word "butt" when the *pupap* noise sounded again.

So now I wait for that hidden webpage to show up again. That's the one thing that worried me.

Oh, and I should mention: before I did that whole reset cleansing thing - My computer, right in the middle of nothing- suddenly flashed blue and then restarted itself.

EDIT: AND THERE'S THE FUCKING JAPANESE POPUP. END GAME. PACK IT UP. ALL I DO IS FOR NAUGHT.

You say you have japanese pop-up banners showing

Have you ever used winny by any chance ?

Also do you have a good Anti-Virus besides Spybot, also you should try Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2007 Free it works good it Spybot and both make a pretty spyware safe environment

I don't think I've ever used Winny. Unless you mean Winrar.

But in other news: I can't go to google anymore. It keeps redirecting me to Yahoo in a foreign language.

I've tried downloading AVG Anti-Spyware (because apparently I didn't have Anti-Spyware for the 3 whole years I had my laptop. Derp), but I keep getting this error:

So NOW I have to figure out what THIS means. Any takers?

It just gets better and better, folks.

My Laptop now no longer recognizes when I insert a blank CD or DVD. I cannot backup my programs to disk. Not even my external harddrive.

With all of these things piling up, I've got nothing. I can't fix the spyware. I can't get in new programs to defend. I can't even put my works onto a CD so I can save them for an emergency restart.

    I just.... I dunno......

Sounds like time for a format. Really, the ONLY driver you need is the NIC drivers for your Ethernet Card, or your wireless Drivers (If you're using wireless). Format, reinstall windows, reinstall those drivers, and you can download the rest from wherever.

If you really don't want to format, try downloading spy doctor. Also, run a system defrag by going to:

    1. Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

Spybot doesn't pick up all viruses. Did you run an actual anti-virus scan rather than just spyware? There's also housecall.trendmicro.com, free virus scan. With a problem this big, maybe you should go buy one.

Also, you might want to try scanning with spybot in safe mode (hit f7 on the loading screen before windows logo pops up). And don't forget to make sure it's all updated.

I would also delete any programs that you don't recognize.
Edit: let me rephrase that...any programs that you don't recognize that you're sure aren't some essential function.
There are sites out there in which you can look up all those processes and find out exactly what they are. It LOOKS like you've got way too many on startup. I usually run msconfig and stop any non-essential programs from running on start-up.

Nope the Winny I was referring too is a japanese peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing program

My advice is try to run a bootcd or try running Windows in safe mode then pass a good Anti-Virus and I really mean an Anti-Virus not a spyware remover also make sure to defrag the hard-drive after passing the anti-virus and the spyware remover

Also make sure to try a rootkit detector and if it finds anything try finding a good site that helps get information on how to remove it

If this still doesn't work, maybe you should try formatting the HDD and making a clean install

Boy im sorry to say this-but ive seen this hapening a mile off.I had a similar problem-I wasnt on the net yet and my computer didnt allow me to store anything on disketes (I own a simple pc,nothing to write on CD's and considering it constantly changed space till it wouldnt even open an empty folder-) .Store it online, while you can.

This shit always ends like this.

I've just read this whole thread. Kinda entertaining at midnight.

Forgive me for being captain obvious, but this is definitely viruses.

Likely, you caught what I call a "portal virus". This downloads and lets in other viruses, which screw up your computer more, make it harder to fix, and ultimately server as cannon fodder in a situation where you are able to slowly regain control.

One of this programs is likely written by some foreign programmer who has a dislike of Google and uses Yahoo instead. Or a US programmer with a sick sense of humor.

Also, the inability to try to download/install/save anything that would potentially make things more convenient for you is a very common sign of viruses. It will recognize every major program from spybot, adaware, windows defender, etc, and will prevent you from opening their webpages, download pages, downloading them, running the .exe, installing them, running the installed program, anything to prevent or delay you from deleting the virus or it's brethren.

You've got it pretty bad. In fact, I'm willing to be reinstalling windows won't do a thing. No, you'll need to reformat. I recommend getting a friend to do it, or if none are available that know more about computers than you, try borrowing a friends computer, bringing the laptop over, looking up "how to format a hard drive" via Google(on HIS computer) and finding a good step by step guide, and doing it yourself. If you take it over to a friend's house don't forget your Windows software for reinstalling later.

Other than that, if it's blocking Spybot, I'm willing to bet it'll do anything to stop you from downloading and running AdAware. Whatever you did, it's royally screwed, and at this point it doesn't matter what you did to get it that way. I'm not even going to bother going through the steps of "did you go to this site? Do you use this program?", because it's irrelevant and almost always ends the same. If you use Limewire, stop, I also recommend using FireFox and getting the NoScript AddOn in the future to prevent getting odd viruses from websites.
