I left a long post in the Marvel movies thread detailing my thoughts on how earlier Spider-Man films hold up or not and how I feel about MCU Spider-Man. The only film I didn't talk about in-depth in Amazing Spider-Man 2, which I think has very flawed second and third acts overall but has a lot of scenes, characterization, and action in isolation and has my favorite first act out of any Spider-Man film.

    I miss those conversations too.

And my vacation is going well. Been seeing a psychologist recently, made my first short comic book a month ago, and I just got my best friend/artist to fly over to my house from states away to hang out for the first time in-person for a week.

I think Tom Holland is a good actor, but MCU Spider-Man is defined so much by incompetence and cringeworthy awkwardness most of the time that he falls flat for me. He also isn't funny most of the time (which is still better than Tobey never being funny, at least unironically). But he has his moments once in a blue moon.

Villain Rankings from top to bottom:
    1. Vulture and Mysterio (they're both really great in different ways that it's difficult to pick)
    2. Spider-Verse Doc Ock
    3. Electro
    4. Alfred Molina Doc Ock
    5. Willem Dafoe Green Goblin
    6. Kingpin
    7. Lizard
    8. Dane Dehann Green Goblin
    9. New Goblin
    10. Venom (I like Spider-Man 3 Eddie Brock more than Venom movie Eddie Brock because of how he kissed up to Jameson lol)
    11. Sandman (boring as hell. And that Uncle Ben retcon was stupid.)
    12. Shocker (no personality. Needs a damn mask.)

I do love Doc Ock's design in Spider-Man 2 (he really needs to put on a shirt though) and Spider-Man's fights with Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2 though. They have really REALLY great choreography and both practical/special effects that are still better than almost every other superhero movie to this day. And I think that Alfred Molina is still a charismatic actor in the role. I enjoy him most in Spider-Man 2 whenever he acts fully confident or malevolent like comic book Doc Ock's personality, like when he kidnaps Mary Jane and tells Peter to get Spider-Man to show up or else he will peel the flesh off her bones.

I don't care about Ock's random boring sun experiment in Spider-Man 2, his wife dying is sad but she isn't memorable enough for me to be immersed in his tragedy and stubbornness to redo the experiment, and he his criminal acts are so... mundane for someone as smart as he is. In fact, if you add in how little relationship he has with Peter, you can replace Doc Ock's role with any almost any other Spider-Man villain in the movie like Rhino or Kraven and most of the plot still stays the exact same for Peter.

Comic book Doc Ock also had layers gradually revealed about his character over time. Like his backstory being the opposite of Peter where is grew up with abusive father and smothering mother while being bullied by other geeks jealous of his intelligence. Or how he has rare bits of compassion for his love interests like Aunt May and his girlfriend in Superior Spider-Man.

And the thing about Doc Ock is that, authentically, he's a mastermind. His main goals are control, vengeance, and most of all, getting ego validation. With that description, he sounds like one of the most petty guys in the universe. And he totally is, his desperate superiority complex goes off the roof.

But what makes him fun is how goes to such absurdly corrupt yet irresistibly entertaining measures to prove his superior intellect to his enemies.

One of my favorite examples is in this Iron Man comic:
    https://arousinggrammar.com/2013/01/10/doctor-octopus-bullies-iron-man/

In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock solely wants to remake his old machine out of stubbornness that it didn't work last time and spends most of the movie only robbing a bank and hunting Spider-Man. That's fine in a vacuum, but a faithful interesting Doc Ock needs a high concept plan like Heath Ledger's Joker and Mysterio in Far from Home.

I have finished watching all of them. My ranking from best to worst favorite goes:

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse > Spider-Man 2 > The Amazing Spider-Man 1 > The Amazing Spider-Man 2 > Spider-Man: Far from Home > Spider-Man 1 > Spider-Man 3 > Spider-Man: Homecoming

    Favorite Spider-Man:
Andrew Garfield > Miles Morales > Tom Holland > Tobey Maguire

    Favorite Peter Parker/Miles Morales:
Miles Morales > Andrew Garfield > Tobey Maguire > Tom Holland

I can and will explain more in-depth as to why those are my rankings. But I am curious as to what your reaction is and how your rankings go.

I'm not seeing it until the last week of July. I'm going to rewatch all of the Spider-Man movies with my best friend beforehand.
  9. It's not easy to work on yourself. It something I should do but haven't so I'm glad you are.

Bakuman is an interesting read especially with your interest in writing. Only read the original supersons. Not the adventure of the supersons. Immortal Hulk is an interesting book. It's hard to do something interesting with him so it's cool someone mange to found a new approach. You should also try the one where Hulk is the basically a scared guy. It flips the script an in interessting I believe.

Read your article. Some interesting points about Thanos power being out of nowhere. We just accept it because your comic book readers tells us it's fine. I understand wanting to dig deeper into the reasons the planet was wanting was to be cleaned. Mine is more how does half the people dying help? and we should have seen more of his relation to Gomora if it was going to be so important.

If you tried to access the article and couldn't log in, I shared it to you. Assuming you were the account I saw trying to look at it lol.
