• News Roundup for May 29th-June 12th 2011

      Boy do we have a lot of news this time, it's two weeks worth. I have to apologize for being behind, I had a crazy weekend so I held off on doing the previous week's news. So without further ado, here's the news:

      - For the week of May 16th-22nd in Japan's animation T.V. rankings "One Piece" placed in 5th overall with an average household rating of 9.3:

      - Many of you have seen this already I'm sure but we now have Japanese manga sales figures for the first half of 2011, which specifically covers November 22nd, 2010 through May 22nd, 2011. Not surprisingly "One Piece" blew the competition away. In terms of individual volume sales 10 out of the top 50 were "One Piece" books:

      In terms of individual series "One Piece" sold close to 20,000,000 more books than the second highest-selling series, "Gantz":

      - Manga creator Shuho Sato recently posted on his Twitter that the top 100 manga creators made an average of 70 million yen (about $860,000) in 2009. In comparison, the website Yucasee Media noted that Eiichiro Oda earned an estimated 1.3 billion yen (US$15.9 million) in royalties from compiled book volumes:

      - For Oricon's manga rankings for the week of May 23rd through the 29th "One Piece" #62 rose from 7th to 5th place and sold 68,393 units:

      - Again in Japanese animation T.V. rankings for the week of May 23rd through the 29th "One Piece" came in 4th place with an average household rating of 9.8:

      - While not necessarily "One Piece" news, if anyone is interested in how the North American licensor of the anime, FUNimation, has been doing, Navarre has released their last quarterly report involving the company as they had sold it a little while ago:

      - The Japanese animation DVD rankings for the week of May 30th through June 5th are out, and "One Piece" did quite well. "One Piece 13th Season: Impel Down Arc Piece 1" was the #1 best-selling anime DVD and 21st best-selling DVD overall, selling 2,222 units. "One Piece 13th Season: Impel Down Arc Piece 2" was the 2nd best-selling anime DVD and 22nd best-selling DVD overall, selling 2,192 units. Both DVDs were released on June 1st:

      - A bit of bad news, the first 20 volumes of the manga were uploaded without authorization onto the website of Co-Op Land Tokyo. They had been available on the site since last November, however word started to spread of these accidental uploads on 2ch last Monday:

      - Starting July 7th, Bandai and Mattel will begin reissuing the "One Piece" version of the card game Uno in Japan, and will include new original card designs. The two companies originally released "One Piece" Uno back in 2003:

      - "One Piece" #62 is still hanging in there. For the week of May 30th through June 5th in the Japanese comic rankings it fell from 5th to 17th place and sold 48,039 copies:

      - Voice actress Tomoko Kawakami passed away on June 9th due to a long bout with illness. She was 41. Among her roles she played Amanda is the "One Piece" T.V. special "Open Upon the Great Sea! A Father's Huge, HUGE Dream!":

      - For the week of May 30th through June 5th "One Piece" was the fifth highest-rated animated program on Japanese T.V. with an average household rating of 9.6:

      - The fashion label Vice Fairy has recently started creating new "One Piece" T-shirts:

      - With the release of the 500th anime episode Toei Animation and Fuji TV have begun streaming the series for the first time in Japan, but unlike in North America it's a paid rental:

      - Big news for France, the nation is getting an official release of the first 10 movies! The 10th film, "Strong World", will be getting a theatrical release from Toei Animation, Kaze, and Eurozoom on August 31st, 2011. Around the same time, Kaze will begin releasing the previous movies on DVD and Blu-Ray, starting with the 1st on August 24th:
